I agree. One minute we are all lovey dovey supportive, the next minute, I'm feeling ready to run and hide. I'm not even sure what I did wrong, but I feel like I'm guilty for getting inspiration from others.

I totally agree. It is not a secret who maintains the photobucket account, if someone wanted pictures removed I would think it would be fairly easy and painless to do so.

I CASE everything I make in some way or another. I am really not a creative person. I had no idea people posted outfits that they did not want copied in any way or form: I thought this thread existed to share our outfits and techniques with friends.

If you were to go up to the garment district in NYC, you'd find that the designers all copy from one another. (i've worked in retail for 30 years, most of them as a manager/groupmgr). As an example, INC swim is actually designed off of Calvin Klein. Did you ever wonder why, when you walk into a department store, everything is pink or green?

QUOTE]

I understand that and that is part of the reason I buy items off Ebay or through custom designers when I want something very special. I also don't shop much at mainstream stores when I buy off the rack. I frequent small boutiques where the designs are a little more original, though not OOAK.

As far as pink/green, yes there are lots of things. However you can even go a little more unique with pink/green by purchasing Lilly Pulitzer items.

What makes it any different for small in home manufacturers of supposedly OOAK's than it is for designers like Polo or Coach? How many of you own a knock off handbag?

..t.

Let me say - that I have never ever ever ever bought or owned a knocked off handbag. I love my coach!!!! or coaches I say!! I have way too many to count. I hate knockoff brand names or purses!! I take a lot of pride in owning my real purses. and yes I have paid more than my mortgage before in one purse!! I LOVE THAT PURSE.
of course I do obsess about purses. I have a coach watch, sunglasses. never the shoes though. And I hardly ever buy the C's on the purse. those are the ones that are easily knocked off and I would never ever ever think of someone thinking it was a knockoff!

We must have been typing at the same time!

Spelling correction MODEL (duh!)

Sally, are your kids the ones w/ the blurred faces? if so you did add the white coordinate and left off the ears..I think your safe. But FYI it YOURS is the one I'm going to case for the BIG GIVE project, though I have to be honest, I already have my own changes in mind...I like for things to have my stamp.;)

Actually, I don't know who maintains the account. I would love to get the information though.

thanks!

I think everyone that now posts outfits is ok with them being inspired from. but I think the original thread was to help each other in learning and helping to inspire each other and the love of disney! I think we want to share our fab creations to one another and techniques. We were all sewing for our own personall usage and I think that is ok, to sew for your family but....
I don't think that is the issue...
we are just discussing the fact that people are stealing each others fdesign idea outfits , making them, then selling them. hey I sell all the time that is no surprise, but I want to make sure it is my own design!

You do have a point here, but that's why Calvin Klein is the superior brand--the really great ideas originated with them and that's why people are willing to pay more for Calvin Klein and not the knockoffs--people put more value on the original. Also, Gymboree quite clearly copies **a lot** of their designs, themes, and garment details from one of my favorite Euro brands, Catimini--usually a season or two after the Cati version has been released. It's quite funny because then a lot of lesser brands like Carter's, Circo, etc. then copy Gymboree.

My thoughts on case-ing have changed a lot over the past year. I really don't see a problem with someone drawing inspiration from another source (a small element or detail) and you're quite right that this is a regular practice in the garment industry, but recreating something verbatim can get really get grating. Your own creativity needs to come into play at some point...Know what I mean?

I am new to this board and have been amazed by all your wonderful designs. And maybe I should keep my mouth shut but this topic intrigues me. First the person who took your book and is mass producing them is a pretty crappy person. Did you report them to ebay, I would think you could show some proof of ownership through the forums history. With respect to the case ing, is the dress/outfit an exact copy or similiar in fashion. Are they mass producing, is it just a one off. I work with a lot of design graphics and in many cases have had very similiar designs by completely different firms. In some cases arent you casing off Disney and their creations and not paying them royalties. Also for those of you who do sale on ebay how do you feel if someone resells something you made for them, is that okay.

I would say this is a really gray issue, just playing devils advocate here. I really do think all you ladies are very talented and that your creativity is actually increased by the open discussions and collaborations on this forum

:upsidedow I remember there being a very big discussion regarding something like this waaaay back when this thread first started. Funny to see it brought up again.

Feel free to copy any outfits I have posted because MIL will not make and sell any of her creations (dosn't want to risk a run-in with the Disney police). Her stuff is pretty "basic" anyhow. Back to your discussion.

It is the person who has the links in the first post of this thread. I have already sent her an e-mail reagarding your request.

Okay...remember, this experience is GOOD for your girls! It will be a period of growth for them...which a lot of kids do not get, and they should. I am sure they are staying with people who love them dearly. They will be safe and well cared for!! It's good for kids to see that mom and dad can go away for a little bit and return and the world didn't end. (That works on BOTH ends!;) ) They are probably going to have a BLAST! Not to mention the benefits of mom and dad taking time to be together and nurture their relationship. That is teaching its own lesson of positivity and what good relationships look like! The girls will not be scarred for life b/c mom and dad took a week vacation! I PROMISE!!

This is a good thing all around for a lot of reasons. It's good for everyone! Your girls are going to great! Y'all are going to have a wonderful time in Jamaica!! Remember to use sunscreen!!! Have a WONDERFUL time!!

:beach:

(as for plane anxiety...Hyland's makes an all natural homeopathic "stress relief" remedy called "Calms Forte". It's amazing. It's made of chamomile extracts and it really helps calm the butterfly feeling without making you feel drugged. You just don't feel hysterical. Which is nice...:) )

Hi Mindy (my*2*angels) and Miss Cammie~
You know that marriage workshop my DH and I took that I was talking about last week??? Well, there was one session dedicated to the fact that the most important thing you can give your children is a great marriage. Not toys, not cell phones, not taking them to tons of extracurricular activities, (not Disney vacations  ). Though they are nice things, they aren't the most heavy-hitting, long-lasting, stability-building things. One of the ways to show your children a great marriage, ironically enough, is to spend quality time alone with your mate. Long story short.....have a great vacation! :cheer2: You're doing your kids and your marriage a favor!! :thumbsup2 I don't have any experience with the Calms Forte but it sounds terrific! ;)

totally don't remember that. was there?

I think the conversation was more around if it was legal or right to be recreating Disney characters on clothing appliques and profitting from them. People had been posting the info for the e-bayers they had bought their customs from and then a bunch decided to remove that info for fear of being "caught". My memory's a little fuzzy since it was in the original thread a long time ago.

I do and all of the people who wanted to share patterns and such started a secret club on another discussion board but they started clicks there too. I continued on the dis board and eventually everyone who was tattling and pitching fits eventually went on their way. I remember b/c I was new and I was very unsure which thread I was supposed to follow. I didn't want to pick the wrong one.
I certainly wasn't trying to insinuate that you couldn't afford a real coach...my point was you hardly know who's is real anymore, there are SO MANY knock offs floating around.

I really didn't mean to fan the fires. I'll quit, now

Jeanne, sweetie, you did nothing wrong. I absolve you:thumbsup2

Thank you for the welcome!!!
I did a search on some Disney stuff to help plan for our trip in 09, and this board came up. I looked at the families forum and honestly the psst we sew got me, I thought it was a great byline. I have 3 kids - 2 boys and 1 girl work in Corporate America, pretty booring stuff. Saw all the beautiful outfits (mostly girls, too bad for the boys) and had to look at everything, like I said I think you all are incredibly talented and help drive each other to a new level of creativity. Not much for posting but saw the question and had to respond

Dont have a sewing machine if I had one it would be a paper weight because sadly I have never sewed in my life. But I love clothes

oh do your kids have any custom clothes. Love to see the wee ones in custom clothes... promiss no casing
oh you forgot to post there ages?

"secret club"? Have I missed something?:confused3

Last June my DH and I took our little ones to WDW for the first time. It was a dream come true. I painstakingly planned every aspect of our trip. I honestly believed we would never be able to go back. Who knew we would have been hooked! LOL

So, my MIL sent my DD to the Wonderland Tea Party. I searched for the perfect Alice dress and could not find one. So I said I will make one. How hard can it be? I bought a pattern and fabric. I came home and read the directions. I placed the pattern pieces and cut them out. Then I called my Mother. I was in a panic. What had I gotten myself into!!! She came over and I put my head in her lap and cried. I am not lying!!! She talked me through the pattern. I have never felt such a huge sense of accomplishment as I did with that Alice dress!

We came home and I found this thread. I was hooked! Soon I started sewing a lot. Now over half of my girl’s clothes are made by me. I take a lot of time picking out fabrics and patterns. I even started making my own patterns. When I first started I cased a Nemo dress and a pair of shorts. I also recreated a very expensive outfit at Christmas. That was more of a challenge from a friend then a case but I cased it.

So here is my question. Honestly, how do you feel about case’ing? Now that I am a confident seamstress (for lack of better word) my feelings are different. Now it is one thing if someone is like . .. oh I love that fabric or I love that pattern where did you get it? Even I want to make my DD a dress like that can you help? Sure I would love to but when people start case’ing for profit I really have a problem. I made a set of autograph cards and posted them on the DIS. Do you know someone took them and is now selling them on Ebay!!!!

I just wanted to get your ladies thoughts on this matter. It is something that has been on my mind lately. Thanks!!!

Stealing someone elses idea exactly and selling it for profit is not a nice thing to do at all. It happens all the time but that doesn't make it any less frustrating. It must have been infuriating to have your PDF stolen and your idea sold on Ebay. I do think though, that that is the risk that is run anytime a person shows their ideas on a public board.

I personally would have no idea where to even begin if I didn't first get some inspiration from the people on this thread!

I guess as long as there are patterns out there and fabric that can be purchased by the masses, like the wildly popular Friends around the World fabric...there will always be variations and replicas of ideas...but I think it's done in a spirit of collaboration and friendship...not b/c people want to "rip someone off" or lessen the value of something that someone purchased. We're just not that sinister on this board! :cool2:

Aimee you know that I LOVE love your stuff. I'm endlessly impressed by the things you create for your girls. I hope you will keep showing us what you are making!!

I have no issues with someone who can't afford something they see on Ebay and making it for themselves.
If I made something for DD and posted it and then someone else took it and made it into a business- Im not exactly sure how I would feel.
In general I think CASEing is a compliment. If you dont want anyone to completely CASE your outfit, and it would really bother you that someone else did that, dont post it.
I hope I dont offend anyone, its just my opinion.
I come here to get ideas, no I havent copied anyone but I certainly have learned what patterns others have used and love their stuff and I use that pattern- like CarlaCs patterns. Some people have a harder time with the idea part, but want to make lovely things for their children, so they come here, is it so bad for them to look at something and say "OOh, I think I could do that!"

I think it also depends on how original an outfit is, certainly on here I can tell which ones are a totally orginal idea and which ones are simply a pattern- that's me. I just follow the directions. LOL.

I think this was well articulated!:goodvibes

New Update on my Aunt.

I just talked to my sister (who drove STRAIGHT thru from TX to Michigan, but did make it safely). They are planning to move my Aunt to the "step down" unit TOMORROW instead of Tuesday like they originally planned :cool1: :cool1:

:cheer2:

OMGosh..I'm speechless. Your talent is amazing. I would pay a mint for those. I just have oodles of pictures sitting in my computer that would love to live in those books. :lovestruc

I had asked about 8 -9 months ago to have my pics taken out of that photobucket account. I was given a password went in took them out. I don't mind posting them here but was assured they would never be added. it is a public photobucket. now they are in there. please take them out. don't just block the faces. take them out please.
