Disboutiquers Part 5 Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes psst..we sew

Last June my DH and I took our little ones to WDW for the first time. It was a dream come true. I painstakingly planned every aspect of our trip. I honestly believed we would never be able to go back. Who knew we would have been hooked! LOL

So, my MIL sent my DD to the Wonderland Tea Party. I searched for the perfect Alice dress and could not find one. So I said I will make one. How hard can it be? I bought a pattern and fabric. I came home and read the directions. I placed the pattern pieces and cut them out. Then I called my Mother. I was in a panic. What had I gotten myself into!!! She came over and I put my head in her lap and cried. I am not lying!!! She talked me through the pattern. I have never felt such a huge sense of accomplishment as I did with that Alice dress!

We came home and I found this thread. I was hooked! Soon I started sewing a lot. Now over half of my girl’s clothes are made by me. I take a lot of time picking out fabrics and patterns. I even started making my own patterns. When I first started I cased a Nemo dress and a pair of shorts. I also recreated a very expensive outfit at Christmas. That was more of a challenge from a friend then a case but I cased it.

So here is my question. Honestly, how do you feel about case’ing? Now that I am a confident seamstress (for lack of better word) my feelings are different. Now it is one thing if someone is like . .. oh I love that fabric or I love that pattern where did you get it? Even I want to make my DD a dress like that can you help? Sure I would love to but when people start case’ing for profit I really have a problem. I made a set of autograph cards and posted them on the DIS. Do you know someone took them and is now selling them on Ebay!!!!

I just wanted to get your ladies thoughts on this matter. It is something that has been on my mind lately. Thanks!!!

I personally get a lot of ideas and inspiration from browsing :wizard: I have never copied something exactly. I have never tried to sell a CASE. I do CASE you all often. I try to not do it exactly the same. I try to only CASS (copy and steal some things instead of everything :rotfl: ) things for my DDs to wear. I have made a few things and then seen very similar things on :wizard: or etsy. I don't think these people ever saw the things I made, I just think they had similar (not exact) ideas to mine. It can and does happen. I think CASEing something exactly and trying to sell it is wrong. I also think part of sharing my photos on here is to give other people ideas. If I had something spectacular I wanted no one to copy ever, I would not post it or sell it. It's a tricky issue, but I think anyone would feel bad to see someone copy something exactly and then try to profit from it. :confused3 I do love getting inspiration from you all and if I wanted to make an exact CASE I would PM you first.

I think I'd be miffed if someone cased and sold, it's different here just because we all share and each do something a little different than the other, we inspire each other. I know my sewing has gotten much better because of all of the wonderful ladies and Tom on here.

I've been enjoying making clothes for Delaney and she's definitely gotten into asking me for outfits for certain events and even picking out the fabrics.

Speaking of help, thanks to LisaZoe for the dental tape hint to making ruffles faster! I used that yesterday and it made the skirt I was working on much easier. I had someone else to thank for some other technique but the thought is gone from my mind. They say the mind is the first thing to go, sigh, mine's been gone since I got preggers with Delaney. I was hoping it would be back by now, alas, that wasn't meant to be. :)

Heck, my sewing space wouldn't be as organized as it is if it wasn't for all the organizers who shared their spaces with us.

I'm in the midst of laundry today. I have to finish it all up this weekend so I can pack the beginning of next week. I went and did the last of the dental work I have to do for awhile today, I do still have stitches but he trimmed them and promised he'd take them out next Friday so I don't have to worry about having them on vacation.

I still have to finish the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse skirt that I started and got most of the way finished yesterday. I just need to get the elastic in it. Then I need to clean the tank so I can put on the applique on it. Delaney is going to end up wearing a lot of customs that I've made before since a lot of them still fit, I just never got all the time I needed for my ambition plans.

You know I have been here awhile now. Probably over a year or more. I don't post much anymore but I do keep up with the thread. So if you don't mind I'm putting my 2 cents in. CASE-ing is something that really bothers me too. How many of you remember this outfit ?

epcotoutfits.jpg

I paid $175.00 on each of these on :wizard:. I saw it on here when the designer posted it and I though it was very cute and unique so I contacted the seller and bought it. I also remember the overwhelming reaction to this when she posted it. No one asked her if she minded if they case'd it but here's the proof

http://s204.photobucket.com/albums/bb256/disboutique/Epcot N Friends Around the World/?start=all

And no I did'nt say anything at the time but yes it did tick me off. I bought this because it was unique and I wanted something special for my girls. So do I think case-ing is wrong ? Absolutely. I like coming to this board and showing off the things I buy and looking at the original creations of the talented ladies and Tom but no I don't like them being cased. Just my humble opinion and I hope I have'nt ticked anyone off.

what a great autograph book. Now I almost feel like a **** showing my scrapbook. But I will, in no particular order. This is 3 different books. They do not have a theme all have some fab 5, some princess, pooh, and some classics. Like I said Im no professional.

I am SOOOOOOO jealous! You have a scrapbook for 2009 already? I am still working on 2005:rolleyes1

Actually I recently "gave up" on 2005 2006 and 2007 (which I have not even bought books for yet-let alone worked on a page) and skipped ahead to 2008:angel:

I am new to this board and have been amazed by all your wonderful designs. And maybe I should keep my mouth shut but this topic intrigues me. First the person who took your book and is mass producing them is a pretty crappy person. Did you report them to ebay, I would think you could show some proof of ownership through the forums history. With respect to the case ing, is the dress/outfit an exact copy or similiar in fashion. Are they mass producing, is it just a one off. I work with a lot of design graphics and in many cases have had very similiar designs by completely different firms. In some cases arent you casing off Disney and their creations and not paying them royalties. Also for those of you who do sale on ebay how do you feel if someone resells something you made for them, is that okay.

I would say this is a really gray issue, just playing devils advocate here. I really do think all you ladies are very talented and that your creativity is actually increased by the open discussions and collaborations on this forum

hmmmmmmm.....
how did you hear about the board.... you are pretty new.
Welcome, tell us a little about yourself, we like to get to know the newbies!

In general I think CASEing is a compliment. If you dont want anyone to completely CASE your outfit, and it would really bother you that someone else did that, dont post it.
I hope I dont offend anyone, its just my opinion.
.

I posted my daughter's pictures here because I was excited to show things I bought for her. I stopped posting her outfits. I wish I knew how to get all of her pictures removed from the Photobucket account that was started and has things posted here.

You are so right! My girls will be fine, I am not worried about them! THey probably will not want to come home even when we get back!LOL Staying with Pop and Gran Gran is just too much fun! It is me I am worried about!LOL

And yes, I have already packed sunscreen, but now I need to look for the calming stuff! Where oh where can I find that?

Most CVS pharmacies have the Hyland's stuff! It really works well and it's not a narcotic! Just helps you to chill! It's not too pricey either!:cool1:

I think it's pretty exciting news T.!

Oh goodness! Good thing I found these smileys!

I feel so much the same way!!!
Now, I need a tissue!

(I added the smileys to the photobucket account under smileys)

TJ, you ROCK!!!:cool1: I just KNEW you'd find them!!! You never cease to amaze me!!

Grrrrr - just typed a huge post and the internet connection disappeared taking my post with it!!

A brief recap was I agree whole heartedly with everyone else talking about friends. I live 160+ miles from my family and my only friends up here are work colleagues. I don't have any 'proper friends' as such, so you guys fill that gap nicely!!!

OK so my sewing machine is now all fixed, which has allowed me to make this.......

The hat is instead of bows, as I wasn't convinced Hope had enough hair!!! I can't remember what size I made in the end but its huge!! Lets hope it fits by December!!!

I left the dummy (binkie) in especially for you guys!!! I think Hope's teething at the minute and she won't take it out her mouth at all.

that child is absolutely ADORABLE!!! I love a red head!! Must be the Irish girl in me!!!

You guys are so sweet, and I think you all know how I feel about you.

Great news t, I hope you do really well!

Here is Megan's autograph book. I was going to keep it a surprise but since she asked for one and came across me making it my cover was blown. I took a drawing pad and covered it. It looks pretty boring, but I am hoping it will look snazzier with pictures and autographs. I am just happy to scrap; I haven't done anything in a year!

IMG_0521.jpg

Oh, and the bodkin is quite the multi-tasker; I used it to push the ribbon through the spirals.

IMG_0523.jpg

We are going to the princess lunch in Norway tomorrow (eek, tomorrow) so we hope to see many princesses.

IMG_0524.jpg

She is also going to the Wonderland Tea Party this weekend. I don't think adults are allowed but I hope she'll get some pictures.

IMG_0525.jpg

We always seem to run into these two, so I made a page for them. They are often at the back entrance of Epcot (in case you were wondering).

IMG_0526.jpg

Since we hang out in England a lot I made pages for our Pooh friends.

IMG_0527.jpg

I don't know why I included Mickey and friends; I know we won't have time for them, but we will some time right?

IMG_0528.jpg

That's for Miss Cammie, Megan helped me with that page. I don't know if you can tell, lol.

I included blank pages in the back so if we run into someone I didn't make a page for I can do when we get home. It was fun to make and didn't take long at all. I hope the characters can sign it ok!

I LOVE the Donald!!!:cool1: Thanks for the shout out!! My alter ego is pleased!! Steph is there anything you can't do?! My goodness!!!

Megan went through a Rolie Polie Olie phase and started talking like Zoe (me want this, etc.). I was livid! I wanted to write a letter to them to complain!

I am SO with you on that one!! I started banning those shows when I realized how persistently BAD the grammar was. It just leaks into their little brains. You'd think shows for young children would figure that out instead of dumming things down. RAR!

what a great autograph book. Now I almost feel like a **** showing my scrapbook. But I will, in no particular order. This is 3 different books. They do not have a theme all have some fab 5, some princess, pooh, and some classics. Like I said Im no professional.

I love it! I know what you mean about not having time to scrapbook anymore. Mine supplies look so sad sitting in the bottom of the craft closet half covered by fabric. How big is the notebook? I'd like to know if anyone has trouble signing it too.

I'll jump in on the case-ing subject, it is such a different line of where people draw it. Some say it is okay to change up one thing, others do not. With the around the world, say you put different people on the legs, is it different then yes, but does the outfit still look the same, yes. (I know there are several different variations in photobucket and they are all cute, some done with different patterns, etc).

But I must say, I did not invent mickey mouse or disney nor did any of us, so I'll agree with the previous poster, we are all just casing. Aren't we? We did not make the patterns either, most if read closely say not to be used for resale along with most fabric, etc. There have been many court cases with the use of fabric issue.

I think this is hot topic and honestly hope it does not stir up this thread since this is a friendly thread and I think sometimes responses are given only to heat things up.

Oh, i wanted to add on the autograph book part of it. I was the one who actually bought a book off ebay and had no idea that person didn't design it until later on, think Aimee posted hers or something and I knew right away then since she told me she made the pages. I don't feel as if that person should have used the inside pdf files that Aimee designed. The cover I am sure is different since I asked for it custom made. I added up the costs to do it myself on my printer with my ink and paper and cannot imagine the person even made a profit from it, especially if I included the time involved. It was going to cost me atleast what I paid. But I do not feel right now that I have an autograph book like that. Dallas loves it (even though he doesn't do characters) but I would have loved for Aimee to make it for me instead. It is beautiful and ashame that for months I was giving credit to the lady on ebay.

Thank you for the welcome!!!
I did a search on some Disney stuff to help plan for our trip in 09, and this board came up. I looked at the families forum and honestly the psst we sew got me, I thought it was a great byline. I have 3 kids - 2 boys and 1 girl work in Corporate America, pretty booring stuff. Saw all the beautiful outfits (mostly girls, too bad for the boys) and had to look at everything, like I said I think you all are incredibly talented and help drive each other to a new level of creativity. Not much for posting but saw the question and had to respond

Dont have a sewing machine if I had one it would be a paper weight because sadly I have never sewed in my life. But I love clothes

Did you post in feedback how she/he did not author the book, it is a shame that somone is benefiting off her work. I see all the awesome stuff in the creative disigns forum and it makes me wonder. Put a watermark on your stuff or created by.

I think when an outfit is posted here, its been pretty much fair game for CASEing. Most people ask first (to be polite) But not to many think anything of it. I know for a long time I didn't. Then I decided to start selling too. I will not CASE an outfit for profit. I know how much thought and talent goes into these sets now. When I first started sewing I didn't know. So to CASE an item and then sell it - nope, I won't do it, it's wrong. I won't be CASEing at all in case any of my sets for DD end up as resells!!

Inspiration is a little more of a gray area. It's one thing to see a set, love the fabric or even the stlye. If you use the fabric in a differtent way, or base a set on a style you saw - that's different (as long as the sets are different of course!) That set with the friends fabric was a perfect example!! It was a total original, and a lot of people recreated it. I think even if the appliques aren't on the set (the jumper with the jeans), it's a CASE. But there are some completely different sets too that are just using the fabric - that's inspiration.

I think this is hot topic and honestly hope it does not stir up this thread since this is a friendly thread and I think sometimes responses are given only to heat things up.

I agree. One minute we are all lovey dovey supportive, the next minute, I'm feeling ready to run and hide. I'm not even sure what I did wrong, but I feel like I'm guilty for getting inspiration from others.

I don't like CASE-ing. I think it wrong to do to the designer *AND* the buyer of the original set. Now if it isn't meant to be a OOAK I don't mind if the seller makes more than one but for someone to knock it off, well, I just don't like that.

As a buyer, the reason I buy custom boutique is the originality factor. I look for things that are unique and have fabulous details. Most of the outfits like that are very expensive, like $200 - $300 range or more. If I am going to pay that for an outfit, which I don't mind doing for my daughter as long as I can, I really don't want someone to knock it off. I think it cheapens the original.

Some people think it is okay to CASE if you aren't going to sell the set. I still don't like it even if it is for personal use. There are so many different ways to go. I think part of the idea of making your own set is coming up with an original idea.

Just my opinion.

I agree. I find it very rewarding to have very unique and special clothes for my children. Part of the reason I have learned to sew is I cannot afford to spend $300 on an outfit. Even though my garments might not be at the level of the top sellers I am very proud of them. I think it has a lot to about artistic integrity.

I have no issues with someone who can't afford something they see on Ebay and making it for themselves.
If I made something for DD and posted it and then someone else took it and made it into a business- Im not exactly sure how I would feel.
In general I think CASEing is a compliment. If you dont want anyone to completely CASE your outfit, and it would really bother you that someone else did that, dont post it.
I hope I dont offend anyone, its just my opinion.
I come here to get ideas, no I havent copied anyone but I certainly have learned what patterns others have used and love their stuff and I use that pattern- like CarlaCs patterns. Some people have a harder time with the idea part, but want to make lovely things for their children, so they come here, is it so bad for them to look at something and say "OOh, I think I could do that!"

I think it also depends on how original an outfit is, certainly on here I can tell which ones are a totally orginal idea and which ones are simply a pattern- that's me. I just follow the directions. LOL.

Like I said before I cannot afford $300 outfit but I do enjoy looking at them on :wizard:. I have learned a lot from this board esp when I was starting off. I am more than happy to share pattern numbers or sources of fabric.

I am new to this board and have been amazed by all your wonderful designs. And maybe I should keep my mouth shut but this topic intrigues me. Welcome to the board. How did you find us? Do you sew or are you just a lurker? :)

I personally get a lot of ideas and inspiration from browsing :wizard: I have never copied something exactly. I have never tried to sell a CASE. I do CASE you all often. I totally agree I love finding inspiration all over the place. Sometimes it is on :wizard: and sometimes it is at the mall. I was an art student in college and we were encouraged to get up and look at other students work. It was to inspire. Sometimes I will see a trim or technique I find interesting. You can work lots of ideas so them become your own. :) I know one example in particular another diser and I made Snow White outfits for our daughters. We both used the same image but it was unintentional. I was not upset and either was she. It happens sometimes. Then there are other times that i t is not innocent at all!

You know I have been here awhile now. Probably over a year or more. I don't post much anymore but I do keep up with the thread. So if you don't mind I'm putting my 2 cents in. CASE-ing is something that really bothers me too. How many of you remember this outfit ?

Your daughters outfits are beautiful! They are lovely and I can see why they are worth the money you paid for them. I think that was an excellent example!

This is just a topic that has been on my mind a lot lately. I cased tadamon last week. I made a monkey skirt. My MIL bought the shirt and I already had the fabric. I put the two together. You know I look at that skirt and think it is not mine! Sad really.

Don't feel bad at all. You know me and I am happy that Dallas likes it. When you see it think of my DD and now it was made out of love. Honestly Karma gets you every time and I am not worried about that seller! I do however do not hand out my pdf's any longer. They are out there if anyone wants them. I cannot stop them.

it's not the 9838 pattern- but it could be a Cinderella
closes on ebay in about 4 hours

okay- in my search for Disney Princess patterns Icame across this site which basically lists all the patterns out there- pretty cool list

http://www.family-vacation-getaways-at-los-angeles-theme-parks.com/Disney-Princess-Costumes.html

I love this pattern!! What is the number?

I don't like CASE-ing. I think it wrong to do to the designer *AND* the buyer of the original set. Now if it isn't meant to be a OOAK I don't mind if the seller makes more than one but for someone to knock it off, well, I just don't like that.

Just my opinion.

If you were to go up to the garment district in NYC, you'd find that the designers all copy from one another. (i've worked in retail for 30 years, most of them as a manager/groupmgr). As an example, INC swim is actually designed off of Calvin Klein. Did you ever wonder why, when you walk into a department store, everything is pink or green?

You know I have been here awhile now. Probably over a year or more. I don't post much anymore but I do keep up with the thread. So if you don't mind I'm putting my 2 cents in. CASE-ing is something that really bothers me too. How many of you remember this outfit ?

My picture is one that you used as an example. And frankly, I don't recall ever seeing the picture of the your purchased outfit you posted. Although I'm sure I did at some time. It's quite lovely I might add. Which one of the outfits you pictured is exactly likes yours? I must have missed that one. Photo bucket seems to give those little stamp size pictures. But isn't it also a pattern that we have all been looking at on YCMT? Hmm... I love the Mickey ears on the little girls tops. I should have done that.

OOOH, I agree both that CASEing is an exceptionally GRAY area and that it is a hot button topic.

I don't think it is right for someone to take a file that you created and use it for profit. Could you make the PDF only copy able instead of being able to save the document and make changes? then you could put a little tag saying you made it on each page.

BUT Disney also thinks that copying is wrong and the images you used were most certainly the property of Uncle Walt. I would have done the same thing had I thought to do it first (and didn't have your pdf!;) which I did not sell, it cost me like 100 bucks to print and bind 4 of those things!!!) But you have to admit that you used certain artistic licensure yourself in it's creation.

And the same goes for nearly every designer on the block but there is only so much restriction you can put on the creative process. Which is why there are knockoffs of every major brand in existence. What makes it any different for small in home manufacturers of supposedly OOAK's than it is for designers like Polo or Coach? How many of you own a knock off handbag?

I'm not saying that ethically it is the right thing to do to profit from someone elses idea but that's what we call free enterprise around her. McDonalds had a business modle, the made hamburgers quickly...it did well, it made sense, more people did it. Ya know?

So if anyone hear feels I cased them inappropriately please let me know and feel free to case any and all of my stuff that you see, just don't put my name on it.
