Anyone need the Minnie dot fabric from Hancocks? I bought 6 yards yesterday for someone who doesn't want it now. I doubt they will take it back, so I would like to get rid of it if possible. It was $4.99 a yard. PM me if you are interested.

I am pretty sure someone here will be interested in the Minnie Dot fabric, but if not, you can return them to Hancock. My Hancock will take back any cut fabric that is more than 2 yds.

All this Measles talk was reminding me of my lovely measles experience. I got the Measles in the summer after second grade. Mother called the Neighbor over to show her my "rash" Which is primarily on your stomach. Of course my mother has to show her how it goes down under my panties. :headache: Fast forward to 1991 and I am trying to go to college. Turns out that kids born in 1972 were vaccinated earlier and that the vaccine wasn't as effective. So Georgia State University wants everyone born that year to be revaccinated. We tried to get records of my having the actual measles but Mom didn't take me in to the DR. So No Record. So I had to have another Measles Vaccination. At this point I am probably the most immune person to the Measles.:lmao:

I had to post this since I used to be one of the top Ten posters on the original thread but. . . I haven't been around much lately I have been too busy.

Oh. . . I hope you are feeling better soon!

thanks for the kind wishes!!:goodvibes There was a lady at our church that would drop in to our house unannounced ALL THE TIME...and usually her kids were sick and she had no trouble dropping their britches to show my mom a spider bite or a rash or what have you. This always mortified my mother! It got to wear she'd shoo us off to our rooms with strict instruction to keep quiet while that lady was there! She didn't want us to catch anything! She was too darn polite to tell that lady to keep her germy kids at home!:lmao:

On the other end of the spectrum, I have had Chicken Pox TWICE. Once when I was about 9 and once in COLLEGE. Then when I got pregnant with Spencer, they tested my immunities, and i was NOT immune to CHicken Pox, adn had to have a booster!! :scared1:

It's genetic that my family doesn't hold onto Chicken pox immunity...my mother had it 5 times. :scared:

how are you tested for immunities? Is it safe to get boosters for things when you are pregnant? All this talk of "testing" and "boosters" makes me want to avoid pregnancy! I am NOT a pin cushion! And I'm a fraidy cat!

The doctors always told my mom that my older sister could get it again b/c she only had 11 spots total. Gosh, not me! I had 84,000 pox...I was so polka dotted with them that I think I had spots on top of spots. It was MISERABLE. Chicken Pox in the middle of a Texas summer! I got them from my little sister who got them from daycare where an infected little boy kept kissing her cheek! My little sis was supposed to be flower girl in a wedding! I know y'all will feel my mom's pain as she had made an elaborate, intricately detailed flower girl dress that ended up being worn by a very MESSY little girl who was too big for it and got spaghetti sauce on the front while she was wearing it. AND she threw a kicking screaming fit during the reception and busted some seams. Poor mommy. She's never gotten over that!:sad2:  If you mention it to her she'll squint her eyes and say "ill behaved CHILD busted the seams!":lmao:

I made this Enchanted top (not a dress) for a fellow Diser. She wanted a top instead of a dress so her daughter could wear it over leggins. I thought that was a pretty clever idea! I made up the pattern for this one too.

Deann, I sent you these pictures first, I hope you got them!

Hello all, long long time lurker here....
I just read some of you all are from north jersey, well me too.
I love all this stuff, but am just learning how to use my machine.
Anyone from north jersey first know a good place for fabric (rag shops closed), walmart usually does not have too much
And, any good idea for lessons or something like that? I have made things, but my stitching just seems rough, and the thread is loose, and I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.
Any help from you north jersey ladies would be great to point me in the right direction
thanks

Hello, all! I've been tending to a sick baby for about a week, and now guess what?.... I'M home sick today! Sore throat, snotty nose, blech!

Anyway, I finally finished the "Lucky" outfit. Here are pictures of the front and back. Hopefully Kimberly will post pics of the outfit on her daughter after she receives it this week....

th_DSCF6458.jpg

You bet I will! They arrived today and Mia thinks she's modeling them so I can take portraits for a designer. She still has no idea they're hers, which is the only reason she's not sleeping in her Lucky outfit right now, LOL!

I got a booster in the hospital after I gave birth. I was getting a different shot anyway (I forget what it's called), because the kids were positive blood types, adn I am negative.

The first time I had Chicken pox, I had it EVERYWHERE. I got it so bad, my mother was worried I would have to go to the hospital. I had it in my mouth and throat, "down below" (thanks for the term, whoever posted this)!!), on m palms, the bottom of my feet, everywhere! The second tine I got it, I got it less severe. When/if the kids get it, i will probably get it again....:sad2:

Here is what i have been working on, its not finished, still have 2/3 more to complete.

it actually hasn't been to bad to make, although i dont have a ruffler yet so i have to do it all by hand:headache: ! Its pretty much like a twirl skirt but you add more layers as you go down. like i said its only 1/3 finished so the end product should be 3xtimes more 'puffy' than the pic.

That is so pretty!!!! Great job!

Speaking of birthdays- I sent DDs out (for friends and family and kids) with "no gift necessary- just bring your appetite" Im doing a cook-out style. Fairfield County be "darned". I have a neice who for the last 7 years doesnt say thank you for gifts. Her Mother is no help. She sits the kids in a circle and hands them all gifts (regardless of who they are from, so for example our gift ended up in the hands of strange kids) they are then passed-like some sort of game around the circle. They stop and neice takes one, opens, rips apart gift- might mumble "thank you" to the air, and then repeats. One year I told DH I didnt feel well and couldnt go. I wrapped gift and sent it along and told him to "keep it out of the circle" apparently he put it behind a couch and pulled it out after "the circle" he handed it to her, she opened card, played with ribbon, ripped open gift, mumbled "thank you" and then someone asked her who gave it to her- she had no idea. They dont send thank yous either. Okay, Im off my vent.
I HATE it when my kids come back from their parties and don't know who gave them the gifts! :headache: I've instructed Brian to make SURE they KNOW who is giving them what. I just think it's the polite thing to do, and to thank the giver for the gift!

Jehoviah's Witness- HeatherSue- was that you? I'm so intrigued! Maybe you can help me! See I'm Petacostal, and these nice J.W. came to visit me and I accepted their little book to be polite and explained I was Petacostal. They have come back 2 more times since. I explained last time I really am a bible-thumpin Penticostal and pretty deep in my church- they said "thats okay" and I just dont know what they want and I dont want to be rude cause they are very nice to me. I actually dont want to discuss "my belief vrs their belief" I really dislike confrontation or debate and Im afraid their goal is to convert me (like some of the born agains I have heard who go out into the community) What can I say to them at my door and be polite? It seems rude to tell them not to come back.....

I'm the Witness. I'll say, that if anyone does not want the literatrue and doesn't want to read it, please feel free to refuse it. We are use to rejection, we will not be offended if you are nice. :) At this point, you just need to nicely tell them that you are very happy with your own religion and would appreciate it if they didn't call on you again. It sounds like they believe that you are truly interested in our religion. Yes, you are right, our ultimate goal is of course to get you to become a Jehovah's Witness. However, we have a lot of people that just like to read our literature becasue they find it interesting. Just let them know you don't want them coming back, if that's what you want. You wouldn't believe how mean some people can be, so if you are polite, no one will be offended.

She's never gotten over that!:sad2:  If you mention it to her she'll squint her eyes and say "ill behaved CHILD busted the seams!":lmao:
Oh geesh, that has got me laughing so hard!!!!

honey you are so talented. That is just gorgeous. You are an artist!!!:goodvibes

You are such a sweetie!

I'll have to drag this material off to the fabric shop with me. I'm waiting until after vacation to tackle something for her! We are headed to Florida in 2 weeks... We fly in to Tampa on the 22nd and Head to Disney on the 27 till May 4th. We are helping my neice and then attending her wedding on the 26th and then the real vacation begins!. I need sunshine so bad! Have a wonderful VACATION!

Thanks! You too!:goodvibes

hi all! I found some little enistiens fabric at hancock and I am trying to track down a little enistiens dress thast was posted a while back. It had a yellow top with rocket on it. Does anyone remember what page or have the link?

That was by LauraP.

It sounds like your thread tension is messed up. Do you have a manual for your machine?

I have a question about birthday parties...do the kids usually open the gifts at the parties your kids go to? Around here, it is customary to wait until everyone has left, and then to write thank you notes after the party....I like it, because there's no competiton about who gave what, and no embarrasment over "doubles".

Teresa- that is just amazing! (I thought I commented on it already, but couldn't find it). Really, truly amazing! I think that anyone would immediately know that is an Enchanted "dress".

I don't think that I have ever been exposed to measles. Hmmm. I know I got chicken pox twice. Once apparently went unnoticed by my parents (really? that is what the doctor told me). My parents tried to make me get them before I was school aged by playing with my cousins who had them. UGH! Germs! Then my sister got them when I was in high school, but I never seemed to get them, except for the "unnoticed time". Then about 3 weeks before my wedding, on the day of a huge audit at my new job, I noticed spots all over my torso- yep, chicken pox. It wasn't a bad case, maybe 20 pox total and all were hidden under clothes except a few on my neck. The bad part was that they immediately scabbed over, so I wasn't contagious. Bad part being that I had to go back to work the next day!! I was so worn out from fighting off the illness, I was miserable.

Birthday parties- sometimes we open presents there, sometimes not. Cooper's birthday is coming up. I think that we might not open presents to save time! I also like it for the reasons OP mentioned, no issues over duplicates, and no chance of a 3 year old saying "we already have this". I haven't perfected my eyebrow arch yet (although I did practice in the mirror this weekend!!).

At the beginning of my pregnancies they draw blood and they can test it to see what you have had. Everything from Measles to AIDS to Herpes etc.

They show you the results. I Hate having my blood drawn and I hated and dreaded the few visits when they did.

In our area the gifts are opened so everyone can see. I've never really noticed much competition but then children's parties in our area (at least among my friends and family) are very simple and low key. For most of the kids, getting to see the birthday child's reaction to their gift is an important part of the party.

8 bids!!!! :wizard: My very first time selling!

It's only day 3 out of 7!!!!

It's all used clothes. I cleaned out Norah's closet and piled up a "lot" 96piece size 3T clothes.

I'm thrilled!

I'm so very sorry my fellow Dis-sew-ers. My GOOFY material came from my long time stash... I have loved me some Disney my entire life! I got this material from a mill in Manchester NH back 20??? yrs ago. I have a variety of material from that time frame. All bought for .25 to .50 cents a pound. Some of it was 2nd's most of it was not.

I'm sorry.... really. I'll see how much I have when I'm done and I promise to share.

I went to a birthday party and I wish that they would have opened the presents after the party, because the little boy opened the gift from me and Jenna and just handed it to his baby brother and said very loudly, "This is a baby toy. I don't want it." I was so embarrassed. Me and Jenna left shortly after that.

That is how parties are around here. We all keep them low-key.

I have a question. I'm going to sew on some lace on the bottom of one of the peasant dresses I'm making. How do you sew this on? I've used lace before and don't know if I do it right. Do you sew it behind the hem, in front of the hem, or "right sides together"? I think the lace wouldn't be heavy enough for right sides together.

Thanks!
Chantell

I've sewn on the top of the fabric as well as behind. For me, it depends on the lace. Some are finished looking on top and bottom edges with others aren't as nice along the top edge so I put those behind the fabric. Is the lace flat or pre-gathered? Often the pre-gathered isn't very pretty along the gathered edge because of the fabric used to enclose the gathering.

Chantell, I usually place the lace side by side with the fabric and stitch them together using a very narrow zig zag stitch.

I just noticed Lisa answered mentioned 2 types of laces. The technique I posted will only work well with flat lace.

It's a flat lace. When I put it in front, you can see the material behind it. When I put it behind, I think the material in front of it looks dumb. In the past, I put it in front. I thought maybe I was doing it wrong.

So after you sew the lace on, it kind of hangs right below the fabric? That's an idea I hadn't thought about before!
