Just in case you thought I was kidding...

Hello to all of you very talented people! I am an occasional lurker here and need help!!! I'm a beginner when it comes to sewing - I've done some curtains and blankets for my son's room. Now, I want to move into clothing and patterns terrify me! It's hard for me to find a pattern I like. Does anyone out there make clothes without patterns and how do you go about it??? I am looking to make a simple summer top and I guess I just don't know where to start. :confused3 If anyone has any advice for me, I would be very grateful!

Lisa
What I do is find a pattern that I like atleast one thing on and just modify it to fit what I am looking for.

Good evening all so far so good this week no new injuries for the Ivie twins. :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2: :worship:. Emmy is doing better I am only having to give her med when she wakes up in the morning. My guess is it gets stiff sleeping at night. I just wanted to again say thank you for all the wonderful well wishes. It has made dealing with all this a little eaiser. In fact I have gotten some sewing done today and came to a fork in my path I wanted to get all of your opinions about the yellow lace trim on this dress. I am not sure if it makes it too busy or not. Tia and I will keep you up dated on the Ivie twins life in the ER.:rotfl:

I like that yellow lace :)

Stephres- I found the HSM pillowcase, but I have a question. Did you turn your pillowcase sideways? I thought the picture was going to go the long way but it's horizontal.

Hey!!!! Thanks so much for the plug! I have been working on that eBook pretty much non-stop for the last month! You should see the state my house is in right now  ! I have a gianormous pile of laundry to attend to today. My poor husband :sad2: .

You are my HERO! I LOVE your patterns sooo much! I use the a-line almost every day (seriously)! I cannot wait to get this new pattern, my little Saylor needs a sailor outfit! :worship: :worship: :worship:

Has anyone used Carlas "Easy-Fit" Pants for Dolly and ME! (BOYS, too!) pattern?

YESSSS! It is awesome! They are so dang easy! You will love them...they turn out sooooo cute!!!

SOOO cute as always! I LOVE the peasant top! How cute is she???? :cutie:

I've been lurking the past few days...kind of voyeuristic...anywho...I'm freaking out at how talented you all are! SHEESH! Cakes, amazing outfits, photography...it just never ends! GREAT JOB to all of you! I'm inspired, as always, once again!!! :worship: :worship:

I love all the stories on how you've all named your children. I'm totally fascinated by how you've chosen names! I wanted to jump in on that bandwagon, so, here goes (be advised, I have a zillion children, so, this could take a while...)
Selia Laurenne...named after her great great grandmother Celia Grace...Laurenne is just beautiful to me, so, there you go....
Hallden Spencer is named after my Grandparents, last names were Hall and Spencer. My Hall grandparents were killed in a car accident when Seli was about 10 months old...I was VERY close to them and I knew I wanted to do something to honor them...I'd heard the name Holden and thought it was cool, so, I just switched it to Hallden...Spencer is after my other grandparents who I was also lucky enough to be very close to!
Blake Scott is, unfortunately, named after his father...I just liked the name Blake, (are you seeing a trend here? I've taken the liberty to name all the children...including number 4)...Broden Jack was actually Emma Rose until the minute he was born. Oh yes, I had the nursery decorated, clothes bought, EVERYTHING was pink...bit of a surprise when the doctor said, It's a Boy! and poor little thing was 5 weeks early and in the NICU for 15 days. YEESH! I'd never heard the name Broden but I dreamt it while I was in the hospital with him and I loved the name Jack, so, there you go! Now, Saylor was tough, my dh and I couldn't find a name we both just LOVED...I had thrown out Elle and Ella and Belle & Bella, which I LOVE, but, dh just wasn't so into it. My SIL suggested Saylor and we both fell in love! It was a perfect fit with my dd Selia and his dd Scout (who was named after "To Kill a Mockingbird" Scout...NOT Scout Willis---just to clarify)...Saylor's middle name is Lynn, which is also my middle name, and dh suggested it, which I thought was super cute! dh also has a daughter named Abigail, who he, unfortunately, had no say in naming, but, we all agree, it's a super beautiful name!
WHEW! Did I mention I had a zillion kids? YIKES! Alright, gonna upload some pics so I can show you what I've been obsessing over for the past few days!!!!

I'm baaaack...
Okay, my amazing MIL brought me 11 yards of this toile in pink and 7 yards in blue...HELLO! Just to be nice...LOVE her!...so, I made Saylor and my DN, Kennedy, matching spring outfits....
boutique001-3.jpg

I had mentioned a while ago that I bought princess sheets and wasn't sure what to do with them...well, I made THREE outfits, and still have leftovers (from twin sheets!!!)! Whoever thought of using sheet sets to make outfits is a GENIUS! So, here are two of the outfits, one for Saylor, one for DN, Kennedy, and one for my favorite little flower, Lily (jham's cutie!)...
boutique003-3.jpg

boutique004-2.jpg

This is an outfit that my SIL requested for her friend's baby...it's actually tiny...3-6 months...
boutique006-2.jpg

This is an outfit I made from scraps...I'm loving the halter/pillowcase top, can you tell?
boutique007.jpg

:)

Me again, sorry to hog the board (this is what happens when I only lurk!)...I know I've posted this outfit before, but, we got a great shot of Saylor wearing it over the weekend and, being the shameless mother that I am, I have to share....
boutique001-4.jpg

My dd, Scout, made Saylor's little bow...so proud of her! Wish I could do bows that well!!

she is just too cute ! love the bow

Thanks to everyone who commented! I love peasant tops and this one is cute and casual, so I was happy with it.

Steph - I missed your orginal post, I love the pillowcase peasant top!! I'm going to have to look for that pilow case now! Was it sold seperately or in a set?

It was sold seperately, somewhere by the big face princess pillowcases.

Glad there have no been no further injuries! I like it with the lace. I almost bought that pretty buggy fabric, I can't wait to see yours all finished.

Stephres- I found the HSM pillowcase, but I have a question. Did you turn your pillowcase sideways? I thought the picture was going to go the long way but it's horizontal.

I turned it sideways and used every bit of it for my tall girl. It is a pretty big pillowcase.

What a nice MIL! I love the pink toile with the green. Perfect spring dress!

Wow, Scout is better at bow-making than me! She can make bows for Megan any time! And Saylor looks adorable in her strawberry outfit.

sugarbees- all of those outfits are so cute. I love the idea of making clothes out of sheets. I bought a set of princess sheets off of :wizard: just to make clothes out of them. :lmao: DH thinks that I am nuts for doing that.

Well I better get to sewing. I have three dresses that I am hoping to get done tonight, one I want to get done tomorrow and then the weekend will be all for DD.

My MIL is awesome! We both have a major affinity for toile!
I will tell Scout (that'll make her day!)...she'll probably be sending some soon! :thumbsup2

I've pretty much finished up my outfits for the boutique...I think jham's got a few left...Oh wait, I've got a pair of dolly bloomers to make still...

Just a little Aline dress I made for Gabi. I used the simplicity pattern but changed it quite a bit to make it fully lined. It's reversible but the inside doesn't have the princess embroidery as it was just a test run for a minnie mouse one I want to make for our trip to Disney.

Sorry they aren't the most exciting pics, I just finished putting the buttons on at dinner time :)

I plan to put the design higher in the hoop next time too, it's been a while since I've done much embroidery, no time due to the monkeys ;)

Here are a couple of shots of a silly little doll dress I made for Gabi's giraffe. I just wanted to try out the super cute minnie applique, it's not perfect because I only have one hoop and didn't think to change the stitching order but I have another hoop coming so when I do it on her minnie dress it should be perfect

Your little Gabi is a doll! I'm a huge fan of the a-line, myself! And the giraffe dress is awesome!
I WANT to make the pinafore SOOO much! Do you mind sharing which pattern you use for that? I've been looking but can't find anything!
SOOOOOO CUTE!!!! :cool1:

Umm, I made my own pattern by tracing one I found at a store. This is pretty much the same thing though and it's a free pattern online :)

http://www.themayfly.com/weblog/2007/02/you_asked_for_it.html

I think the only real difference is the pocket on mine is shaped differently :) I plan to do one for Disney with a mickey mouse head shaped pocket :)

Thank you! You never know what they are going to say. Megan's friend just got prescription glasses so Megan has been wearing her hello kitty sunglasses to school. When her teacher told her to take them off, she said, but I have to wear them, they are subscription!
That girl is so cute!!! :rotfl2:

I was just thinking that same thing, then I remembered "oh yeah, my 15mo and my 4yo don't allow me to sew!":rotfl:
I had that revelation as soon as I got it into my head to start cutting some fabric. My revelation involved screaming and "SAWYER BIT ME!!!" I suppose I will have to wait until bedtime!

Here am I, sneaking out of lurkdom to post, my first sewn garment in close to eight years, a flirty summer skirt for dd. This was completely handsewn. I used Waldemort fabric $1/yd for all of it. It has a sheer white lining since I was afraid the sun would show off her unders if I didn't. It is a tiny bit big in the elastic waist. But overall, she is happy and my fingers hurt. Feedback please.
WOW!!!:worship:I can't believe you did that by hand (I do believe, but I'm shocked)! I am a HORRIBLE hand-sewer. I would not show the inside of any outfit I did handsewing on. The skirt is super-cute!!

To post pictures, you just need to copy and paste the code next to the box on photobucket.

My advice would be to not try making an outfit without a pattern for a little while. I'd start with a "sewing for dummies" pattern, or something marked easy, even if you don't love it. Just start with some inexpensive fabric for practice.

I like it best with the lace!

LOL I saw the shark online late one night and it said that it was safe for lamintates....but then I went to my flooring manufacturer site and it says NO to steam cleaning. Well phooey! Guess I'll get a cheapo sponge mop and make some microfiber cloth covers to go over it and get a spray bottle and some vinegar. Oh well, more $$ for the fabric stash. LOL
How about the Hoover Floormate? It's doesn't have steam- it squirts the water solution onto the floor, scrubs it with the brushes, then sucks the water back up, leaving it pretty dry.

I love all the stories on how you've all named your children. I'm totally fascinated by how you've chosen names! I wanted to jump in on that bandwagon, so, here goes (be advised, I have a zillion children, so, this could take a while...)

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about how you named all of your kids!

I realized that I didn't post how I came up with Tessa's name. I saw in a baby book that Tessa is the short form of Teresa. So, of course I wanted to name my baby after my wonderful sister! Her middle name is Jane, which is the same middle name as Henry's high school teacher, Nancy Jane. Sounds weird, but she really took him under her wing and she's like a mother to him.:lovestruc

WOW!! You've been busy! I'm loving every outfit that you make!! Aren't sheets great? I made Tessa a nightgown out of Tinkerbell flannel sheets a while back. I could make 4 more of them out of the fabric I have left!

Geez, :worship: I worship your A-lines, applique, skills in general, You in specific ,photography, seemingly angelic dd, fabric choices (I like the vintage look!!!!).

Now, do-tell, what kind of camera do you have. Brand, model etc.

I will attempt artsy photography next time. I will do the redneck version of course. :rolleyes1 with a half drunk sippy cup, half a cat as she zooms through the frame, and a most uncooperative subject. It's all your fault!
