DIS Giving Challenge for Katrina

Add me to the list. The Red Cross is great... they were here after Ivan practically before the debris stopped flying. I don't know why, but it's comforting just to see them in your area after a disaster. It gives you hope.

My DW and I made a donation last evening. Our thoughts and prayers to all who have suffered because of Katrina.

Made a donation yesterday and I see DH's Company has a matching program, so he will make one tonight. Matching programs count for double.

Thanks for starting this thread. Pass it on and keep it as the number "1" post on top!!!!

The DIS is the best and this proves it...

Add us to the group. Wish we could do more. NOLA is one of our favorite places of all time...

I'm going to need a serious diet after all the stress eating I'm doing while glued to the tv. :rolleyes1

Here on Hilton Head, there have been several fund raisers planned for September. These people are going to be in need for a longgggggggg time.
Several supply drop off points are listed in the paper today, just haven't had a chance to make any purchases as yet.

I know DD will want to send some of her money to the animals....Peter thanks for the info.

I am very busy getting my boys..the firefighters..ready to go if they are called. We have 14 guys on our Urban Search and Rescue Team and 28 guys on our Haz Mat Team. Today I've purchased first aid kits, tarps, equipment for our boats, extra saw blades and Jaws of Life blades, plus other things that are too many to mention; the boys have MRE's, their bags are packed and they are "chomping at the bit" to go. So, we are waitng most anxiously for the call from FEMA. Chief thinks if we are called, it will be after the teams finally get to these outlying areas and they do their assessments. So, we're looking at a few days.

I have been to New Orleans once and cannot imagine that beautiful city the way it is now.

I've been to Biloxi MANY times....and at least my favorite hotel is still standing..so far. When I looked at video today, I could only see two things I recognized...The Hard Rock and The Beau Rivage....so, so, so sad.

We all need to pray that this is the end of the storms for this year.

Thanks everyone
Phyllis :earsgirl:

I just made my donation to Noah's Wish and as soon as I can get thru to the Red Cross, I'll make a donation to them. If we all donate even just a little, what a difference that will make!

DS and DDIL have donated blood (DH and I can't), and I belong to a group which will be providing handmade afghans, shawls, baby clothes, etc. as soon as residents begin asking for these things. It's only a tiny contribution, but every little bit will help. I can't begin to imagine the utter devastation and the cost and time required for rebuilding.

Beth

Just want to point out that 1-800-helpnow has an automated line that might be quicker to use than to wait for a live operator.

Also, if you're planning on giving blood and have travelled outside of the US within the last year, be sure to check with the Red Cross to see if you are eligible. Last fall, we cruised on DCL to Costa Maya and we can't give blood for 1 year.

Thoughts and prayers to all affected in the South.

Will be leaving Friday to spend several days in Slidel (sp?) as part of a disaster medical care team. Will let you all know what we see when back...

The friends that I spoke about earlier live in Slidell, I will be very anxious to hear a report from you when you return. Thanks to everybody who is helping!

Our thoughts and prayers go with you, be safe!!!

I am 4 1/2 hours from New Orleans, on the coast in Texas. They are bringing people to shelters here now. We have all donated at my company and my DD's school is collecting so we will be donating through them too. My DH works for the electric company, he is very busy right now. Actually one of his main offices is in NOLA. From what I am understanding at this point he will be traveling back and forth bringing supplies. He is a trainer so he will not be one that makes the lights go back on but he will definitely be working it. It has hit so close to home. I live right on the coast, so 4 1/2 hours west and that could be us. I am so saddened by this.

Donated last night - Red Cross was there for everyone in our area last year during Jeanne and Francis. I know what it was like to not have power in the heat for such a long period of time and what it did to my state of mind - I can not even imagine what these people are going through.

Donating to the Red Cross is Great, In addition, please try to search in your own areas for needs from what we are calling "refugees". I am in Atlanta and have several friends and neighbors sheltering their freinds and relatives. One mother came with her two small children with a few suitcases expecting to go back in a day or two after it died down. Their house is gone along with EVERYTHING. I took some of my childrens's clothes and shoes and school supplies to them and we cried for over a half hour. Never has anyone been so grateful. In fact, my DD 7 said "Mommy that is the first time I have ever seen you cry." These people will need an entire household put back together in a few short months. So please donate to the Red Cross for monetary donations and find ways to help those closer to you.

In case of disaster, I opt for giving to the Salvation Army. I like the fact that they keep their salaries and overhead low, and they're always right there helping on the front line.

God Bless you and may He be with you on your journey! :grouphug:

God bless those poor people! We donated as well.

I would now like to see all the celebrities who held telethons for tsunami victims also do it again for our own who now need us more than ever. Angelina? Brad? :)
