DIS Giving Challenge for Katrina

I've heard that some of the survivors will be coming to the FEMA trailers set up here in Charlotte County, FL, after Charley. Some people have either moved on or are getting back on their own feet, and we all wondered what would be done with all the trailers. Seemed like such a waste, but I'm glad they didn't take them away yet!

I have heard the officials are asking only for money. Anyone know if this is true? I have some nice business suits I had planned on taking to a consignment shop, but I'm sure someone down there could use them.

I gave to the Red Cross.

The school paper said the University is planning things so I will actively participate. I read that some groups on campus are also trying to plan relief trips so I am going to do all I can to be involved in these events.

I donated several bags of essential hygiene type goods to alocal shipment that left yesterday, tuesday we are doing monetary donations at my daughters school. Tomorrow I;ll join in with our church and Ill find out what the boys schools are doing Tuesday.

When I saw that Bi-lo was matching the donations I gave to the Red Cross through them.

also, I donated blood for the very first time.

I'm so glad that so many people are helping!!!

Me and a friend bought some dry goods, diapers, bottles, and toiletries on Tuesday and dropped them off at a local firestation. All of the firestations here are taking donations.
Thursday some of us gave a monetary gift to a local radio station for Wal-mart gift cards for a 4 generation family staying in town.
And tomorrow, thanks to a post on these boards, I am able to cook breakfast for a group of evacuees at a local hotel (about 30-35 people are at just this hotel).
Also, our city is having a job fair Tuesday for all of the evacuees!!!!!! And, one tv station is making it their goal to make $2 million dollars in 2 days!!!

Our family donated to the American Red Cross. I also gave cash to our kids' elementary school. One family took in 25 family members with 9 children. They are going to be going to our school.

My husband is a firefighter in Austin, Tx. We will be working with the local IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters) and they will be opening their union hall as a shelter for family members of affected fire fighters from Louisiana and Mississippi.

I did not read through the replies.
This morning I made a donation to the US Humane Society.
And we found out great news at work yesterday afternoon. My employer will match our contributions to the Red Cross. In addition, one of their clients will match the company's contribution! :cool1:

So many places are in need, any donation big or small in money, clothing, food, time, etc., are all appreciated and needed!!

I've given $$ to a few places, sent along a few packages, and my only hope is that they end up in the right hands (i'm sure they will).

Gave to Catholic Charities, as my school is have a drive.

Brought supplies (diapers, baby food, bug repellant, water, etc.) to caravan at local church. DS6 brought his stuffed animals (only the best ones!)

Donated my points from mysurvey.com to Save the Children for Hurricane Victims.

Put up our extra bedroom on craigslist to offer to victims.

DH works for a Tenet hospital and is ready to go if they need him.

Wish we could do more!!!!! :grouphug:

Living in the UK the only current options are to donate to the Red Cross which I have done. If only I could send food and clothes I have bags full of good quality toys and clothes.

Donated to Red Cross & the U.S. Humane Society.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this yet or not because I haven't had a chance to read though the whole post but I found out that you can donate your cashback reward to the RedCross through your Discover Card also if you have any. This was really easy to do & sort of like found money anyway since it is cashback rewards.

That's the case around here. What I am thinking is this: We are supposed to be getting some evacuees into shelters here in our town soon. I think at that time, I will try and take clothes, etc directly to that shelter. Hold on to what you've got. It is going to take some time to sort out but I bet you will have a way to get those suits to some needy people.

I donated online to Red Cross. Then after I found out my brother's company would match funds I gave him more money to donate so my gift could be matched.

My children and I have scoured our home and have many bags full of toys, clothes, and groceries to take to the shelter in our area that has many survivors living there now.

I have a couple boxes to send to relatives in Houston whose church has become a shelter.

I'm also trying to cut through government regulations to get my dd's school to set up a collection/donation area. Because it's a DoD school we have certain legalities to work through, but I'm trying to get this going.

I've encouraged everyone I know to give. So sad when my very own parents said they would give BUT hadn't because they couldn't be sure their money would go to the right place. :confused3 I offered them an alternative....send money to our relatives in Houston to give to their church. Then they know the money is going directly to the hurricane effort. There's always a way to give, you just have to look at the faces of our fellow Americans in crisis to know that giving what you can (time, money, prayers, items) is the human and AMERICAN thing to do.

We gave to the Red Cross and now hoping to provide the receipt to my company who said they will match employee giving :grouphug:

I gave to the Salvation Army for the humans and to Noah's Wish for the pets. I am literally ill from what's happened, but I know my migraine is nothing compared to what those poor people and animals are sufferering through in New Orleans. Totally unfathomable.

Donated to the Red Cross yesterday, not much but every cent helps. My boys school has said they are going collect next week, not sure if it is $ or supplies but whatever it is we will be donating there too.

Maybe you could contact the UK offices of Samaritan's Purse to see if they can get the supplies delivered for you.
