DIS FIT 2021 New Hopes, Dreams & Goals, Chit Chat Thread

It really does look nice out there, my cats are all laying in sunny spots. The dog is upset because they keep stealing his places. Not sure if we'll go for a walk or not but I am sure kiddo will want to play outside after dinner. Hopefully we can get the last of the ice off the driveway. I did manage to get some space cleared off the back deck so the dog can access the whole yard again, he was confined to the deck because there was too much snow on the stairs. Any way! A few days of this weather and things will be brighter... then we'll be hoping to do stuff and of course not sure how much of an option that is.

I got a treadmill... TSC had a really good deal and it folds up super small to store. It came today and I'm exhausted from moving furniture around so it's easier to pull out. I walked on it for a bit but tomorrow will be the first workout. I'm very excited and wish I'd gotten it at the start of winter instead of the end. But I think it will be handy in summer when it's super hot or rainy as well.

It is so much nicer to get up these days to warmer temperatures and sunshine. I got up and went out immediately for a walk. Got home ate my breakfast and now it's time to do my physio exercises, a heat and cold pack break then I can start my day. Road trip to Foodland for a few groceries I think.

I got up and did a 10 minute treadmill wake up walk while checking my work email. I will do a long walk at lunch time. Kiddo is also enjoying the treadmill. He's only allowed to use it when I'm around though. And I need to get him his own blue tooth headphones so he doesn't need to use mine and my phone. Will look into that next week. Will start getting outside again for walks as well, just the PUDDLES!! Holy flooding batman... I guess it all melted a little too fast the past couple days

Kiddo had his physio appointment this morning, she did cupping on his calves, put him on this shaky machine, had him balance on a half ball and promised to send some exercises for him to do at home. Also wrapped his feet/ankles up again. He complained I've signed him up for too many things since he also has an appointment with the psychologist Monday. I explained the physio is for his feet which hurt all the time and should be temporary, 4 sessions and hopefully will see a difference and then not have to go again! And that one is physical and one is mental health.

It was a bit annoying though, he has some "friends" who he was going to meet to play basketball, he told them he'd be home by 1:30 and one of them said "why should we wait for you?" He was quite upset that they went without him before we got home. I'm trying to explain that perhaps they aren't really his friends if that's how they behave. But oh man I want to yell at those kids. It is so hard with him not being able to see other kids very often and these are the only boys he talks to online. I can't wait to get through this. He wants to go back to school in the fall, and it will be the high school, so kids from 4 or 5 feeder schools, more choices and hopefully some new friends!

Any way. I'm using the treadmill and walking my worries away... Need to do better with my eating habits. I try and make good choices but I just eat too much, when I'm bored, or upset, or whatever. I am glad the weather is warming up, between the treadmill and getting out for some walks in the fresh air I hope it will get me in shape. I wish groceries weren't getting more and more expensive, even eggs :( I've been doing some rearranging in the kitchen and have made more space for prepping food, so cooking is easier, now I just need some new cutting boards. I think I will get the WW ones, they sent me a 20% off everything code to use by end of April so I can do that soon and get some WW snacks too.

I hope everyone is doing well, enjoying the gradually improving weather, and hanging in there with the isolation and all of that.

I’m not sure if this helps you or not but I was part of a fitness group a few years ago which was based around all of the concepts of a heart rehab program and new diabetic patient program. We’re weren’t in it for those reasons....it just happened that they needed some people to go through it and to give feedback.

One thing that they mentioned is an absolute must if you really want to see how you are doing is to track what you do daily. So you would put columns on a page and write “treadmill.....30 minutes......incline or intensity level (perceived exertion). That way over time you can see where you started and where you are now.

They also very highly discouraged eating WW snacks or any type of specific weight loss labelled food as it gives the perception that they are better for you. They suggested a small handful of raw almonds, Brazil nuts or walnuts, or a piece of fruit, a boiled egg, whole wheat toast and peanut butter and to limit snacks to approx. 100-150 calories. We were told to log what we ate which is hard but I found it helped because you then SEE what you eat. Calories add up quickly. Take cream in coffee for example. Three tablespoons is approx 60 calories so a few coffees a day you have a lot of calories.

Hope I’m not sounding preachy as that is not my intention. Just thought you or someone else may benefit from the info they gave. I learned a lot in that program and it helped me shed a few pounds and definitely helped build my aerobic endurance.

If you have Instagram, follow @justinagustin. He shows examples of true beginner style workouts and apparently he has a website where you can sign up for his beginner workouts for a reasonable fee. He gets a lot of praise for having true beginner workouts. Cheryl Hickey from ET had him on and said the same thing.

At any rate, good for you for starting with your new treadmill. Keep it up....every day and increase a little at a time. You can do it!!!!

I feel for you on so many different levels at the moment. Physio will get better and it is just for a short time. (at least thats what I keep telling myself each time I go for my abuse treatment). Corrections made now will have lifelong benefits.

The kids he hangs out with online, take me right back to my oldest and his time transitioning to high school. It's hard to let them find their way but they do. All he really needs to get started is one good (true) friend. He will find a group. If he has and IEP he will have a special ed teacher who will keep an eye out for him and help to guide him through the transition. I know that's what happened with my youngest.

On the food front. Since my gallbladder surgery I started tracking grams of fat in everything I eat. Too much fat meant a fun trip to the restroom. I've since added the calories associated with everything that goes in my mouth. I purchased a daytimer and keep track of what and when I eat and when I exercise etc. I'm determined to lose 1 pound per week for the next year or so. I've traded my Airmiles obsession for a calorie counting obsession. I look at food in a whole new way now. It's fuel. I don't know if I'm going to be successful but I'm giving it my best shot.

When I want to be bad and have something I shouldn't I find just a bite or two (eaten slowly and savoured) of the forbidden food seems to do the trick.

Hang in there.

So today is National Children's Craft day and since my crafty girlfriends and I couldn't get together the trusty bears came out to play. We are all busy working on our crafts - painting, knitting, colouring and working on a rug hooking. Hope you all work on a craft today even if it is just doodleing. The paintings in the background are all ones that I have worked on - they were just kits from Michaels. The pink flower one in the middle is the one I did today for Craft Day.

Thanks for the inspiration!

I used my last K-cup this morning, didn't realize I was running out of coffee! That's tomorrow's problem though... may have to have tea instead I guess.

Gosh I remember those days when my boys and our dd were younger. The friends thing is so hard at that age!!!! Keep doing what you are doing. Your a great momma who is teaching and showing her son how to forge ahead even when life gets tough.

I can really relate to the snacking and over eating. I'm down 35 lbs now...dh is at 50 lbs down. We still log most of what we eat. But with logging ( Noom is calorie counting) consistently, we have found new ways to eat. I did struggle at the beginning, with how to make our meals more kids friendly. Our youngest ds has sensory issues with eating, and they want and need more carbs in their diets as well. We have found a few new family favorites. Both boys have started eating more of the veggies we eat (not all of them) but I have said that they need to at least try one or two bites of some of the veggies we eat. I was oven roasting most of our veggies and making sheet pan meals which was the easiest.

Our favorite new veggie is and oven roasted/ air fryer green beans with salt, pepper, garlic powered and a little parmesan cheese. We also have at least once a week a oven roasted / air fryer root veggie medley. I cube sweet potatoes, beets and carrots, a little avocado oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder and thyme. That is our favorite one with a protein, and a salad and supper is done. We recently got an airfyer and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!! It has been the best money we have ever spent. If you tend to use your oven alot for meals, you will love an airfryer.

But for us, tracking everything we ate, we a key part - especially for DH. He didn't realize how much he over ate at meals. Also how bad it was for him to basically only eat at supper, then be soooooooooooooo hungry by that time his body was screaming for nutrition, and he would eat huge amounts of food for supper and during the evening. Last week, he was out of town for work, and was very proud of himself that he didn't gain any weight even though they had meeting meals all week. Not that all his choices were fantastic, but it was always in the back of his mind that if he had " x" yesterday or planned to have that tomorrow, he should probably eat lighter right now. He was impressed with himself and the choices he made. Doing noom has taught him new eating habits.

It's great that your walking!!!! I am hoping that our weather stays reasonably warm again. Soon I won't have to walk in the streets as sidewalks won't be full of ice as the grater ridges of snowpiles from the roads are melting, letting the snow people shovel onto their lawns to run off the sidewalks. It's great your still trying and aware and haven't given up totally :flower:

On the healthier eating front. DS just ordered a shwarma and roasted potatoes with garlic sauce for lunch. I love those potatoes so I asked if I could have a few. Got out a small dish put about 1/8 cup in a dish added a little sauce. Savoured each bite and now feel as if I had eaten a whole serving as the taste of the garlic sauce is still in my mouth. I love finding ways to trick my body into thinking I have eaten something bad (I a quantity I shouldn't).

A bite of the forbidden food at the end of a meal really does work.

I found a really delicious recipe which includes lentils (good for fibre and protein) chopped dates, slivered almonds (healthy fat) and celery. It is so simple to make and lasts a while in the fridge. I was never a lentil fan (or date for that matter) but this is amazing good, easy and so good for you.

Here is the link to the recipe...

@Pumpkin1172 The air fryer sounds interesting. How much oil would you need to use to do fries?

Spring is coming folks! Keep on moving!!!

I have been considering an Air Fryer for ages but feel I have so many kitchen appliances that I shouldn't get another one. But we'll see, I'm sure I'll get it at some point :)

Kiddo refused to talk to the psychologist today so I had a session with her instead. It was nice to talk to someone I guess? Hopefully he'll agree to talk in the future.

He's been helping me cooking, very interested, but he often doesn't actually eat the food. He has tried a few new things though. And he is one of those who may have lunch, no breakfast, and then from dinner to bedtime, he EATS. He will often aske me to make him a full meal at 9 pm. I am hoping eventually, he'll go to bed earlier and perhaps eat more balanced over the day. But it's a struggle for sure.

I've been WW and am tracking everything I eat, even when it's a lot of points. Also tracking my sleep and exercise through the fitbit. I do not get enough sleep. Exercise is improving, the treadmill helps. I hung some workout clothes on the bathroom on the main floor so I don't have to go all the way upstairs to change, trying to make it convenient as possible. Today is cold outside but it is supposed to warm up later in the week. Fingers crossed the rest of the snow will melt!

We have been increasing the amount of lentils and beans we eat as well. I will whip up a pot of veggie/bean chili that DH and I take to work, and I have made a few meals that have more beans and lentils in them as well.

Edited to add...we love the veggie/bean chili. Boys...not so much lol. So it's not a meal we have as a sit down meal, but works great to take to work and keep in the freezer and fridge.

For the air fryer and oil....I use up to 2 tsp of avocado oil for a big batch of fries or roasted veggies. It doesn't take much at all. I also bought an oil mist/diffuser that I use to spray the veggies if I feel like they don't have enough. This mist/diffuser I bought creates an aerosol mist of oil (much like Pam) so that I don't need as much. I honestly use my airfryer every day. It works great for steaks, burgers, chicken breasts/thighs. I haven't used it yet for pork. Me and pork don't have a good relationship with cooking. Anything pork I make tends to be tough and chewy, no matter how or what I make. So I gave up and if we want pork something DH cooks :rotfl: I can cook and bake almost anything with zero problems....but pork...nope!!! It never turns out!!!

One thing I wish is that my produce, specifically vegetable, drawer was higher in the fridge so I would see that stuff better. I tend to forget what's there and then it goes bad. Fruits are a bit easier since kiddo eats them mostly and will ask for what he wants.
