DIS Book Club, 1st Selection: Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi

Bought the book today after work and read a few pages already -- looks fascinating. Thanks for making this choice, Ashley. Its a book I have looked at countless times in the bookstore but probably would not have bought it if it weren't for you giving me the push.

Can't wait to start our discussion! :)

Glad to see people getting excited!

I, also, think this book will be a good one to get us started. I had been doing some debating about picking it up, also, but reading it with others and talking about it seemed so appropriate!

Reading books that have already been read by other members of the group is fine. Since we have three options each time, it allows us to weed out books that have been read by the majority of the group, but still have the selection if only a couple have read it. I think the three options will continue to be a successful strategy for book selections.

Judi - Way to step up to the plate! It is hard picking something out and trying to ensure that forty - fifty people will enjoy it. Don't worry too much about it, though. Just let us see what books YOU enjoy, and we can all take something from it!

Loving all the energy floating around in this thread!

Well, just an attempt to keep this bumped up...

Has anybody else had a chance to get the book in their hands?

Any questions about how this is all going to work?

Judi - Are you having any luck?

If you have a chance, why don't we take a little second to introduce ourselves, also!

I'm Ashley, a student finishing up my last semester at the University of Minnesota this coming fall with Student Teaching in fourth grade in the St. Paul Schools. VERY excited about that. :) I'm planning a trip to the World December 20th-January 11th for Christmas with the family, New Year's with the Boyfriend, and the Half Marathon with my Brother. I love reading, doing floral designs (my last day at the flower shop before I move to St. Paul was Sunday), working with children, and enjoying the sunshine. I also like long walks on the beach under starry, starry skies! :teeth:

Hehe... Let's hear about you!

Ashley:wave2:

Well, I'm Christine. I'm married to a wonderful man and I have 2 beautiful and adorable daughters. I work full time as a nurse with developmentally disabled adults. I've been an avid reader since I was a child. Reading is really my only me time. We go back to WDW December 10-17 and we can't wait.

Ashley, I bought the book and have already finished Part I. Its a gem of a book so far. I'll wait until we're at the point of discussion before I say anything further.

I'm Judi, married for 18 years, and we have two boys ages 9 and 5. We live in Washington, D.C. I made my living as a graphic and freelance artist for many years until two years ago, when I made a huge change and became an HR Generalist. My days used to be spent studying and then painting people's faces, now its reading people's faces while interviewing them. :) A big change but sort of the same when you think about it. :) I'm enjoying it, but know that one day I will return to the arts as its in my blood more or less. I love to read but really need to be challenged beyond the light chick lit I can read on the run, and this book seems to be exactly what I am looking for to help me broaden my horizons. Thank you so much for suggesting it Ashley.

I've selected 3 other books to be on deck, and was wondering if I should do a poll to select which one we all want to read? How soon do you think I should do this? Would I PM all the participants, or just start a thread and keep it bumped up? Any insight on how to handle this?

Count me in. I'm kind of flighty and sometimes read more than one book at once. So if I start talking about the wrong book, just bonk me on the head or something!;) I'll try to follow along, and keep up!

Have a great day fellow book worms!:sunny:

I'm Lisa, a married stay-at-home mom with 3 kids, 2 daughters ages 6 1/2 and 10 months and 1 son age 3 1/2. I live in southeastern Minnesota. I LOVE to read, have since I was a kid, but haven't had as much time to since baby #3 came along! LOL! I also enjoy shopping, traveling and cross-stitch. Our next trip to WDW is not until Oct. 2005 :( (haven't been since Nov. 2002). DH insisted youngest DD be at least 2 before we went back. Almost time to get our hotel reservations though!
I'm really excited about the book club. I used to belong to one here, but people got busy, moved, etc. and it pretty much just fell apart after about a year. I've really missed it, mostly because it got me to read books I might not choose otherwise. Now if the book would just come (I ordered it from Barnes and Noble) I'd be all set!

I ordered the book from the library. It should be here in the next few days.

Argh! I haven't had a chance to get the book yet! I better hurry up, get it and "power read" before the first deadline!

Anyway...

I'm Karen, a 33yo with two DDs ages 8 and 5. I've been married for 10 years. I am a SAHM although I am very active in volunteering at their school. I've always lived in Illinois. I have many, many hobbies - enjoy reading, the computer, games, travel, music, scrapbooking and stamping, and basically keeping as busy as I can! We are also DVC members. I think that's the basics.

I need to go to the book store to see if I can get the book. The book has a waiting list at the library. I am so excited about the book. I don't know if I will have time to chat, but I will try. However, I don't even know how to get into the chat room here.

My name is Lynne and I have a wonderful DH and 2 DD's 7 and 4 years old. I work in a prevention program for kids and try to volunteer at the schools. I love living in Florida and I am thinking of moving closer to Disney:)

Judi - Maybe we could just keep it all on this one thread for now? Post the three books, and at the time of your choice come back and decide which one seemed most popular with the group. No need to have a response from everybody, just those who respond, it should give a pretty good feel for the group.

Newbies - I'm gettin ya'll on the list!

Everybody else - DON'T consider any of the dates deadlines, just guidelines! (reminded myself of POTC there). Just try and finish the section if you want to write about it with the rest of us, and don't check the thread once the new section is "unlocked."

Also, don't worry about missing chat. I have started a book journal, and I will take down comments when I am in chat. I won't be at all of them, but maybe somebody from chat can do this each time. This way we can post for those who missed chat what some of the ideas were that were presented.

Keep reading and enjoying!
Ashley

Yowzers-- the stuff I miss while at work  It's great to see this take off! I've placed a hold for the book at my library, so hopefully it'll come through soon. However, the list is long, so I may have to figure out something else.

Ok, I'm Jackie (29). Met my DH while working for Disney and now I am a text editor (college chemistry, if anyone cares), so I love reading fiction after reading texts all day. Most of my leisure reading happens on the train to and from work-- great escape :)

No kids yet, but we do have a crazy pixie bobtail cat (Pippin-- see photo).:

I'm still trying to get the book. I'm trying to decide if I want to just go and purchase it or if I shoudl wait to join until the second book. But, I'm still joining. I'll tell you about myself while I'm posting.

My name is Nicole. I'm from Iowa. I've been married for ten years and have two daughters 6 and 3. I am, for the most part, a stay at home mom, but I have worked a couple evening retails jobs to get me out of the house. I guess I would have to call myself a work at home mom because I just got the perfect job this summer. I do transcription out of my house for the VA. A very interesting job. I've learned a lot. I keep busy with my daughter's activities. We are starting dance this year for both girls and we also do piano. My husband gets moved around with his job every three years or so. We have one more move before we are done, and it's the big one. Just sitting tight until then. We just went to Disney in January, but I'm already planning for that next trip in Dec. '05.

Guess that I had better find the book tomorrow. ::yes::

I'm Sandy and I'm a teacher. I teach first grade and help to lead an afterschool book discussion group with 4th and 5th graders. Not only do I love reading, I love sharing the love of reading with children. Ashley, have fun student teaching. If you choose to be a teacher, be ready to give yourself to children, especially in elementary school. I hope that you do as well as the student teacher who worked with me last semester. Teachers are indispensible!
:earsgirl: :teacher: :earsgirl:

I hope it's not too late to join up?

I bought RLIT last night. We went out for dinner after I bought the book, and there was some wine on the table, which I had to help DH drink. ;) I did start reading the book, but the comprehension part didn't work too well. :p I'll start over again! :D :D

Can I join too? We had company visiting and I haven't been able to get on the boards. I have been meaning to read that book. It looks very interesting. My name is Karen and I work part-time in our local library. There are so many book I want to read! This sounds like fun, I will start reading it today. :wave2:

I started reading it today, and am really enjoying it!

For those who are in question about purchasing it, it seems to be a really good read and maybe a good one to pass around as it can be appealing to lots of different tastes? I know that I have a few people waiting to borrow my copy.

It was 20% off at B&N, with an additional 10% off with Reader's Advantage.

My other favorite places to check for cheap books are Wal-Mart, Target, and Sam's Club. All offer really nice book discounts!

Glad to see even more new faces hopping onto the thread!

Ashley:wave2:

Picked up my copy from Borders today! Starting tonight, hopefully. I better get going!

I bought mine today too and started it this afternoon. I'm looking forward to having an available half-hour or so to sit and read more!!
