My husband just bought me a digital camera, knowing how much I love to take pictures. For example I took 20 rolls of 24 exp. film on our last Disney trip. Being a 35mm girl myself I don't know the first thing about a digital camera. Can anyone tell me if this camera we got is a good one?

It's a Canon S50 and has 5.0 megapixals.

Also do you usually develop your pictures at home on your own printer or some other way? If another way then how?

Thanks for any help!!

A 5 Megapixel camera is more than sufficient for film quality prints. In fact, you may want to set your camer to 3.2M depending on how much memory media you have and whether or not you will have a laptop along to "dump" your pictures to at the end of the day.

As far as printing your digital phots; we take the pictures we want printed to Sams Club. They are the cheapest place in our area that does digital photo processing (I thinkk they get $.19 per print). We also have a Canon (I can't remember the model #) photo quality printer at home when we have a small number of photos to print. Our home printer does an excellent job, but not quite up to par with the professional equipment at the retailers.

I have been researching this subject for a month now. When we went to Disney at the end of Nov., my 35mm Minolta got broke! So, dh ran out and bought me a high-end Canon. I took about 35 rolls with it at WDW, and they were terrible! Needless to say, I returned the camera.

We just purchased a Minolta DiMage Z1, and so far I really enjoy it. If you want good solid information on cameras, any brand, check out this link...

There are forums by brand name, and the posters really know their stuff! (Just like the DIS! ;) )

Good luck!

I have used 3 different ways to print out my pictures from my digital camera:

online photo printing (ofoto) - pictures came quickly but seemed a little grainy. It also took a long time to download the pictures to send them off

home printer - I have an epson photostylus 825 which you can just insert the media into the printer and completely bypass the computer. The prints are decent when printed on normal paper and really good on photo paper. This takes a while to print and eats up a lot of ink

professional printer - went to walgreens and used their machine (.20/ picture). You are the one who choose what and how many of each you print. This was the best quality of picture and cheaper than printing at home (figure 1 ink cartridge plus paper). It did take a while, but if you don't mind going through it and taking the time, it is definitely worth it. Plus, you can burn all your pictures to cd right then. Nice and easy.

Of the 3, I will continue to print my lesser quality pictures at home for my scrapbook but any of the better pictures I will take to the store and do it there.

I just bought a Canon S50 1 month ago, after much research, and I love it. Took it for a trip to London and the pix look great. (I have to admit I still have to figure out how to download and print the pictures--where does the time go?).

If you take lots of pictures I recommend getting one or two large memory cards. The S50 uses the Compact Flash card. Get a 256 MB card (or, at a minimum a 128 MB card). Look for sales and rebates on these cards at places like Staples, Office Max, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. This should give you enough memory to take as many pics as you want. (Don't forget you can delete pics that don't come out well). You can also decrease the picture size/resolution to let you store more pics on the memory card. The camera will tell you about how many pics you have at each resolution.

It's a great camera and you'll love it.

definitly check out the dpreview.com website if you have any questions about digital cameras. He also has demo pictures from tons of cameras. All taken of the same things, so you get to compare the detail, color etc. of pictures of the same thing with different cameras.
