Did You See Bill Maher's Disgusting Croc Hunter Halloween Costume?

Steve Irwin did make a lot of money but I did want to point out something I read in an interview with one of his friends after his death. Practically everything he made went into his zoo and conservation efforts. His friend said that they lived a pretty simple life. There were many times that he would be on location and want to pick up a $10 trinket to bring home to his daughter and find himself with no money and would ask his friends to help him out.

I just wanted to point that out in case there were some people thinking he was living in the lap of luxury like we see most celebrities do. Not that there is anything wrong with that. If I made millions of dollars I'm sure I would be lving pretty large myself. ;)
Thanks for posting this, I posted something similar but couldn't remember any specifics. LOL, at least now I know I wasn't the only person who read about this side of him.

Weirdly enough, I just read online that the Steve Irwin death costume is one of the most popular this season.

Just goes to show there are a lot of people with a morbid sense of humor out there.

Yes it was and in Halloween 97 the Princess Diana costume was big as well. She died in that terrible car accident and people were wearing Dodi and Diana outfits with pale faces and fake blood. It was just as bad or worse, imo and it showed how far gone some people are.

Some people really get into that type of morbid humor and that's the way it is. You can't regulate good taste or proper decorum.

I'm guilty of trying to pull that one off. I didn't do it because I couldn't figure out how to get a steering wheel around my head.

there's an old comedy equation: tragedy + time = humor. you may not subscribe to it, but it's there.

I've got the feeling if you dressed as Steve Irwin minus the stingray barb and blood as an honest tribute and memory of the guy, you're going to catch poop about it.

Did anyone here laugh at first to themselves and then say how awful it was out loud?

I laughed when I saw it, but I laugh at most anything. But like another poster said, it's different if it's a costume where the family wouldn't see it, but this is in public for the family to see, and I agree that's wrong. And I don't think finding the costume amusing, while tacky, means a person is making fun of the man.

If Bill Maher was reading some of these posts, he not only would be laughing at you, he would be making fun of you as well. How did a half rate comedian/political commentator like Maher, end up getting this much anger out of some of you? He did this a tasteless joke and to get a rise out of you. Mission accomplished! He's a jack***, what did you expect?

Yes it was tasteless and tacky, but why do we need to get so upset over something trivial as this? Steve Irwin was a famous celebrity that pushed the envolpe of saftey when it came to dealing with dangerous animals/reptiles. In the public arena if you're a celebrity, you're basicly fair game to the public. I felt sorry for his children losing their dad, but I didn't deel the deep sorrow some of you felt when he passed away. I didn't know the man personally and probably none of you did as well.

I never understood why some people in this "celebrity obsessed culture" we live in, get so worked up when some famous person dies? After all the're on our tv's to entertain us, not for us to get into every aspect of their lives. Look at some of the posts about Mr. Irwin when he died and how emotional some posters have gotten over his passing. Some even said that they weren't sleeping or felt a deep depression. It's not healthy to get into that type of mindset, imo, and doesn't do anyone any good.

It just doesn't make sense how some feel bad about a celebrity dying that you didn't really know. Yet we have had the worst month in Iraq for Americans dying and I hear no one feeling bad about that. The American soldiers are doing something real for us and protecting our way of life, but what are we mad at? An asanine, washed up, shrill comedian who wore a stupid halloween costume! He wasn't the only one who wore that and according to published reports, it was a popular costume this year. I don't get popular culture and find most of it tasteless, but what can you do about it? Bill Maher has done and said far worse than this and probably didn't even give this a second thought after that picture was taken.

I'm sure I'll be flamed for what I'm saying and I accept that. I just don't get how grown adults are getting this angry over something this trival and stupid. Flame away if you must.

No flames from me. You make many good points here.

Bull. Steve Irwin was a public figure. My daughter is not.
I'm truly shocked by you.

He may be a public figure to you.
But to his two children, he was just Dad.

I don't think the other poster's hypothetical situation was heartless at all. It was merely an attempt to make you understand what this might be like for his family. The fact that you were so upset about it makes it clear that it worked. And the fact that you continue to think this costume is no big deal, just because he was a public figure is probably the most hypocritical thing I've ever heard.

Terri Irwin is from my hometown of Eugene, Oregon. My cousin (the one in the wetsuit in my sig) has always loved animals and as a kid, he volunteered at several wild animal rehabilitation centers, including the one that Terri started. I don't know if he ever had the chance to meet Steve, but he and his mom both knew Terri. His work with her as a kid was one of the things that helped him get into the exotic animal college that he attended before he started working at Sea World.

Just because you didn't personally know him or his family doesn't make it any less sickening that people would find this funny.

One of the Cardinal Rules here on the DIS is that we don't attack other people's children and we don't use them to make our point. NBailey suggestion to me that I think about my daughter dying to make her point is just not acceptable. I am surprised that you find it so. Is it now open season on the children of DISers?

Not cool is right. It's never OK to bring a persons family into it even it's just to make a point. :sad2:
Yeah, it's totally NOT ACCEPTABLE to ask someone how they would feel in a hypothetical situation, but it's fine to graphically imitate and mock the real thing, knowing that there is a good chance it will be seen by the 3 yr old and 8 yr old children who's father actually died.

When someone makes a "hypothetical situation" of your children dying a tragic death then you will know how unacceptable and "not cool" it really is. I don't care what you say about me, but leave my family out of the discussion either hypothetical or not. It's a dirty tactic.

To make matters worse, NBaily also used an example of a real DISer and the recent tragic loss of her daughter as a way of making the "hypothetical" more of a reality. I sincerely hope that the real DISer whose DD was used as the real live example of what tragedy may befall an adorable 7-year old girl never finds this thread.

And exactly what did I do to "deserve" the hypothetical death of my daughter? I said that I was not offended by a costume. BTW, it didn't change my mind. I am still not offended by it and I still think it's in bad taste.

it is a dirty tactic, and it's not even relevant.

I don't think it's reasonable for people to say that there is NOTHING that will offend them. I don't see people imitating pedophiles on Halloween and I'm not aware of anyone dressing up as the victims of 9/11. I do think that some people are fascinated by gruesome and morbid things (Saw III is doing wonderfully at the box office) and maybe some see Halloween as a free for all. I can have a pretty twisted sense of humor, but I just don't find this amusing.

I agree with you. I think that we all have a line we draw in the sand as to what is offensive to us and what is not. We all are different. I would never wear the Steve Irwin costume, that's not me, but there are people out there that will, and so be it. I personally don't think it's the right thing to do.

Hold on your horses there! I didn't see Robin mocking anybody, and I doubt you'll see her trick or treating in a Croc hunter costume tonight. She's just been talking philosophically about a question of cultural acceptablility.

It's disgusting!

You know, no matter what people thought of Steve Irwin, or even if they are just trying for a "laugh", things like this are beyond pathetic!

That man has 2 children who might see that. I dont understand how people dont think about the family when they do things like that.

I totally agree, can you NOT understand that his children as young as they may see or hear this? Or even see or hear it years from now, it's very hurtful....

Very sad and tasteless I'm sorry to say....

I saw Bill Maher's costume. And I was offended that he blatantly ripped it off from Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park. I mean, come on, people! Is there not such a thing as respect of original ideas anymore?

Jeez!

I think Bill Mahr (sp?) has done a distasteful, really disrespectful, really mean thing and I think he should at least apologize to Steve's family. Its awful.

I think it was an awfully cold-hearted and obnoxious thing to do in public. The man's family is still grieving, for God's sake.

But, if it had just been a party at someone's house, I wouldn't be offended by it.

Did Maher ever offer any statement or apology? Just wondering because I never saw anything.

Again, I like and respect Bill Maher--for all but this. He ripped off a concept already used by the far more cutting edge Trey Parker and Matt Stone (e.g., the heart of South Park), and tried to pass it off as his own edgy idea.

Normally, though, I like Bill Maher (or anyone who tweaks the Repub. majority).
