Hi everyone!

My husband is starting to look out of Colorado for a job, (Florida to be exact), but when he finds jobs that he qualifies for, he doesn't apply for them. I know why. He thinks moving would be a hassle with trying to sell our condominium, look for a place to live in the new state, etc.

Tell me about your story. If you moved out of your home state for a job else where, how did you begin? Did you go out for an interview and look at housing during that time? Was the move hectic? How did you handle the move? Did you have money in savings acct. or was the move so unexpected that you had to pinch pennies during that time?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I can't believe no one has something to say on this. I don't, but someone must be able to help. Jay

Moved out of state for college, then moved even farther away for dh's job. The company that my dh works for has a relocation department that made moving VERY easy. They drove him around to find housing and then paid to move us. Easy as pie! :D

I have a friend who will be moving to MO next week. Her DH applied for a transfer. He had a phone interview first. At the end of the phone interview, they offered him the position and asked him to come out to their location to discuss the job and to also check out the area. They did that within a few weeks and he accepted the job. The company paid for their trip out and all expenses. The company has a Relocation Dept. arranged an agent for them. They then went back about 4 months later and looked for and bought a house. The company gave them the agents what they could use here to sell their house. The company is paying for the entire move.

We moved to Indianapolis from Chicago last August. Not that big of a move but its still 3 hours away.We rented then we rent now and we had our Disney money we used for the move. My husband works for a contractor in chicago so most of the interviews was through them then there was a phone interview with the company.

Its a big dicision especially with family . I miss my family but I go home almost everyweek.

We moved from Michigan to Florida. DH was layed off and went for an interview in Springfield, IL. While we were waiting to hear back from them, I had found a job at hotjobs.com and kept trying to fax his resume but would only get a busy signal. When we finally heard back from Springfield that DH did not get the job....I was so upset. I said will you call that company in Florida and find out what the problem is with their fax machine. So he called and the owner of the company answered the phone. They talked for a while. Then a few weeks later he flew down for an interview. I found our apartment complex online and while he was here for an interview, he came and looked at it. We had about 1 week to get everything ready to move. We did have to pinch pennies (wanted to make sure we could get AP) but luckily the company paid for our U-haul. We had some savings and got a break on the deposit for our apartment. Luckily we didn't own where we used to live so we only had to give a 30 day notice. I wouldn't say it was a hassle. With such short notice, our adrenaline was going. It was a long 4 days in the car alone with 2 kids. Luckily DS was 6 months at the time so he slept alot. If we had to do it all over again, I wouldn't even think twice. We love it here, it's hard to believe there is a place this beautiful.

We just moved in December. DH was not looking for a job, but he saw an ad on monster.com and sent in his resume. He got called the next day from the recruiter runnning the ad. She talked with him, tweaked his resume, sent it to the company. That was on a Monday. On Friday, on of the sales managers was in PHX for a meeting, DH met him on Friday night for about 3 hours. The next Tuesday the recruiter called and asked if he could interview in person either the next week or the week after. The next week was Thanksgiving so he opted for the week after. THey called back, come THIS week. He flew to Boston on Thursday, spent the day with them on Friday. They talked salary and location. We thought we would be going to Charlotte or Atlanta. They called on Monday, offered him 30K more than the talked about salary and said he had to work in Mass. So we said OK. Put our house on the market the Friday after Thanksgiving week, it sold in 48 hours, we packed everything, contracted a mover, arranged for my car to be transported, and found the house we rented on the web. We left PHX on the 22nd of Dec, got here on the 27th, and he went to work on the 5th of Jan. His company reimbursed us for the moving expenses. We rented this house with out seeing the area, but will be moving in July to a brand new condo townhouse a little further north of here. It was a fast move, we didn't have time really to think about it or worry about it. We had been moved by my employer 2 time in the last 11 years, moving has never been a problem. If you think about it too much, you may not do it. We were extreemely lucky that our house sold so fast, and that his new employer paid our moving expenses. We would have been in a world of hurt paying the mortgage there and the SKY HIGH east coast rent.

Find out how the housing market is where you live, if condos are selling, put yours on the market. Sell what you don't need. Pack the rest up and high tail it top where you want to be. Most employers will work with you on the moving dates, and a lot of them will help out financially.

Well, about 4 years ago, DH was very unhappy in career. We casually discussed moving and put our house on the market. For sale a LONG time. Visited in-laws here in Texas and thought how much fun it would be to live here...got home to a sold house!!!

I KNEW it was right, and we basically used the money from the house sale to move here (no savings). DH had two job offers within 4 weeks and the rest is history...

DH is happy and has a career that is suited for him, family is happy to be close to relatives (yes, I love my in-laws!), and everything is working out great. It was financially hard for several years ..I work part-time only to be with girls. We did buy a home (smaller than our old one), but we did rent for a year first. Things are looking up, and it was worth having less to have MORE if you know what I mean!!

In August of 2002 we moved from Chicago subs to Florida. Our story is that my Dh's boss accepted a position at the university here and was able to bring a few people of his choice to work for him. I jumped at the chance, being that I always wanted to live in Fl. The company paid for our move down and then we lived in a Holiday Inn for about 3 weeks while we found and purchased a house. It's much easier to close on a house in a short amount of time when you don't have a house to sell. We sold the majority of our personal items and used part of the profit from the sale of our house in Il. to purchase new. The only furniture we brought with was our living room set, the computer stand, computer and 3 tv's.

haven't regretted the move for a second!!!!

Good Luck!!

I'm single, so I don't have anyone else to worry about moving. Therefore, I may not apply to your situation. I moved from California to Japan 10 months ago for the chance to work on a really cool project! Of course, my company packed my house, stored my belongings (after I sorted out what I wanted to bring with me), shipped my stuff to Japan, sold my house, essentially bought my car from me, flew me over here, took care of all my visas and paperwork, etc. It was stressful, no doubt, but moving really opens your eyes up to...well, sometimes other parts of the world!

We moved from Williamsburg Virginia to Woodstock Vermont to Cape Cod MA, to St. Croix in the Virgin Islands to Indiana to Cape Cod MA.

Yeah, we've moved out of state! LOL...PM me with any specific questions if you;'d like.

We are trying to relocate...been job searching for a long time and hopefully we will be in a warmer climate than Il. I am ready to sell our place and head to Fl and let the chips fall where they may...only w/2 kids that is scary. Insurance is our main roadblock. The stress of a move would pale in comparison to the misery he/we are in now.

Just moved this past summer from Atlanta to Spartanburg SC.

DH got a job offer out-of-the-blue from a friend of his that was too good to pass up. I had to quit my full-time teaching job, and move away from my friends, and I have to say......

It was the BEST decision we have made. I thought he was crazy when he suggested it--but it was great.

We packed and moved ourselves using boxes we begged for from stores, and UHaul. I packed a little each day for about a month until it was virtually done. We did have a small nightmare with the closing of our house--but it finally sold two weeks after the original closing and we moved right into our new one.

Now I don't have to work full-time--I teach part time at a college here (so I have NO MORE PARENTS CALLING ME!!!!) and I have time to enjoy my family more, little league, etc....

We used savings to get the house ready to sell and to cover moving expenses until his company could reimburse us--which they did a month later.

I still email and talk to my friends regularly, and since we are only 3 hours away, we visit about every 2-3 months.

Now I've convinced my parents to move up here.
