We had two dogs, several cats, an aquarium with fish, a lizard, a parakeet and a rabbit. Not all at the same time, but over the course of my childhood.
When I was little I was very afraid of cats because I was scared that if I petted a cat it would bite me but growing up my mom and I got our first kitten and we had gotten her from a garage sale and she was really adorable and sweet and never was mean and so she became my cat then my mom got another cat as a buddy for my cat and they became the best of friends. But the weirdest thing my cat did was have her babies under my bed because that's where she slept when I would sleep. But we had to leave the kittens with my grandfather when we moved so my uncle took care of them. Then we got an orange cat when I was recovering from a surgery and I found him in the want ads of the newspaper and so me and Mom took a chance and got him and he rode home with Dad in his work truck and that cat was so sweet too but then we got him a kitty buddy and his personality changed and he became mean and actually ran away in our old house but we never found him again. But growing up my mother had dogs and every so often my aunt would get dogs as gifts from her crushes and my mom had to take care of them too and my grandmother would put them outside because she already had a indoor dog who was the king of the house and her cat and they never bullied my grandmother's cat. But when my grandmother's dog died she was very sad and never got another dog so she got cats instead
My daddy brought home a puppy when I was just a few days old. I am in my 70s and there has never been a time that I did not have a dog or cat or both. Right now we have four dogs and a cat in our home. I had a couple of parakeets when I was young but would not have birds anymore because I do not believe that a bird should be in a cage.
My uncle loved turtles and I don't know why he liked turtles so much but he had a bunch of turtles that were outside in his backyard and they were so cool and every time his turtles would have babies he would raise them and then he would give them away to friends. I don't know what started my uncle's turtle obsession but he has a big soft spot for them. I would NEVER keep birds as pets because although they're very pretty to look at I think birds are annoying especially when you have them in a cage and they start singing when you are trying to sleep. My grandmother had gotten a very pretty bird from my mom's aunt and my mom's aunt had given it to my grandmother because she didn't have the time to care for it. So anyway one of the rules that my mom's aunt had told my grandmother was not feeding it rice and only birdseed and when my grandmother got that bird home my mom and my aunt and my uncles were enchanted with it and so one day my grandmother had to go shopping and left my mom in charge of feeding the bird and my mom ran out of birdseed and she decided to give it rice which was a no-no in the first place and the bird ate it and the next day according to the story Mom told me that they found the bird dead in the cage and my grandmother was really angry at my mom and from that day Grandma never had birds as pets ever again
