Did Adam Lambert just kill his career before it even started?

It was highly stylized and highly choreographed. He was playing a part. I didn't think it was shocking. I thought it was theatrical, and that is Adam.

According to this MSNBC article, it was edited for the west coast.

Here is a cut-n-paste from this article above:
“I’m not going to be surprised that they edit it,” he continued. “People are scared and it’s really sad, I just wish people could open their minds up and enjoy things, it’s all for a laugh, it’s really not that big of a deal.”

I personally do not feel that I should "enjoy things" such as watching Adam simulate "you know what." I don't think my tween daughters should "open their minds" to this either. I am quite sure many young fans were watching this show last night.

If you subtract the "act" part of it, even the music & singing stunk. Surprised he even had a "career" to begin with. Yeah, I would think its over.

I watched it again, and I can tell you exactly where he ruined it for me. It was the simulated Oral thing, which he did MORE than once. I will say he totally fell but recovered quite nicely.

Also the whole thing with the woman when he was on the chair also gross.

When the whole Britney Madonna Christina thing happened that was on a CABLE show. Whenever Madonna or Britney performed on a regular station it was not that raunchy.

MTV is a cable station so they can go a little off the deep end. That also was not a good thing for Britney because things started to go downhill for her after that.

Also what performers do at their concerts is also a whole different ball of wax. You are paying a pretty hefty price to see them perform and at that point you could be seeing anything its not televised.

I thought the oral thing was going too far, especially on "regular" tv. I think you expect cable tv to push the envelope, but not ABC. I liked him on American Idol, but this performance was a little too much for me, and his singing was not good.

From what I've been hearing, I expected way worse than what I just saw. And I have prudish tendencies as well. The oral sex thing was really uncalled for, and so was grabbing that woman's crotch, but the kiss is nothing new and nothing horrifically shocking (though I do watch Torchwood so it may just be that I'm becoming desensitized to men kissing). And the rest of the performance was just commentary on how you have to use crazier, shallower, more ridiculous idealizations of sex to sell anything these days.

The whole thing is insight into our culture. Is it right? No. Is it shocking? Sadly, not really.

And BTW, I think that this song "For Your Entertainment" is going to be the next "I Kissed a Girl". Insanely catchy (I heard it in single form and barely recognized it as he performed it in the video) but subject matter that I don't let myself listen to.

According to that article the keyboard player is straight. I feel bad for him. I guess Adam decided to "shock" everyone. I do think its sad.

The article says the keyboardist is straight. It does NOT say if this was unplanned and came as a surprise to the keyboardist or not. IF it was unplanned, I can see where that is an issue (whether he is straight or gay). It seems like a lot of people are just assuming it was:confused3 People have to kiss other people on stage all the time. It doesn't really matter if the person you kiss is of the same sex or a different sex (and which you prefer) it is just part of the show. Most performers get over it pretty quickly and do not think much of it. Others are pretty much always uncomfortable with it, but make themselves do it. A few people flat out refuse roles which would require kissing someone other than their real life signifcant other. So, unless the keyboardist speaks out and says he was not aware ahead of time that the kiss would (or could) happen and that he was not okay with it, I really do not feel it makes sense to keep bringing up that he is straight and assuming that makes the kiss unacceptable to him (how many gay actors have had to kiss the opposite sex on stage:rolleyes1).

I'm not going to watch him--just not my scene.

But if he was attracting someone like me to buy his album--then yes, he killed his career. But I doubt he was trying to do that.

While what little I have read about his performance leaves me skeptical to his future success, there are many an artists who have done scandalous things in the past.

Remember when they wouldn't show Elvis' pelvis on TV. It was consider....vulgar (or whatever they called it at the time).

I won't say what AL did wasn't vulgar or bad--but just pointing out that many performers live on the edge. His people will take the feedback they get an adjust it accordingly if what they wished to convey didn't go over well.

As for the singing, I never really *liked* his singing anyway. But if this was worse than what he did before--performing vocally poor on a live show will hurt him more than any of the performance.

I am a huge fan of Adam....I was really looking forward to last night...and I still am a fan...but

I was a little disappointed...like the other fans said...his vocals were not what I expected...

I couldn't understand why they put him last....after watching...now I know..

Looking forward to seeing him tonight on Letterman...

Can I just make a comment about "kids" watching this? It was broadcast at nearly 11 pm in most time zones. Who has their kids up at 11 watching the AMAs? Really?

It was on during a time that kids shouldn't have been up watching anyway. I find the whole 'kids' point moot.

Well, define "kids". I think when Taylor Swift is up for that many awards, a lot of young teenage girls will be up watching.

Like 13, 14? I actually don't have an issue with the content for an 8th grade/early HS 'kid.' These are the same kids swarming to New Moon.

But I don't think a 10 year old, Taylor Swift or not, should be up watching the AMAs at 11 pm on a possible school night (some places have the whole week off/others do not.)

What about a 12 year old? I don't certain age groups are normally up at that time, but when it's a special show I think allowances are made.

And, sorry, but New Moon doesn't have simulated oral sex.

Won't somebody please think of the children?!?

The dancing was stupid and vulgar just the way he wanted it.

I didn't particularly like the the oral sex simulation myself.

The kiss wasn't the part that bothered me, it was this!

So no double standard here.

And yes, kids watch these things. I know my granddaughters (9 & 11) are usually asleep by this time, but for things like this exceptions are made. I sure hope they were sleeping last night.

If they were staying up for Taylor Swift they sure got an education their parents weren't expecting. :sad2:

I watched it. I don't see the big deal. It was no worse than the Madonna thing where she kissed Brittney Spears. Was it his best? No. Adam is an amazingly talented guy. That song did not show his best by any means, but I certainly don't think it is a career killer. I've already purchased his American Idol songs from ITunes. I'll be buying his CD.

As for kids watching, I really don't think kids should watch these type shows. Too many things have happened in the past on these type of shows that prove them to be not kid friendly.

What she said.

You are right, I didn't think of it that way. I still think that "kiss" was somewhat agressive or "violent" and I know I wouldn't want someone kissing me that way. It looked painful. lol
