EX partner of mine was notoriously mean. I got a magazine for Christmas one year. I thought he meant "I got you a subscription to Vanity Fair", but no, I got JUST the magazine. It was in a brown paper bag (because he said he couldn't find the gift wrap!!!), with my name written on the front - spelled incorrectly. I'm not going to say how many $$$ I spent on his gifts, but after that I was sorely tempted to return most of them on 26 December and get a refund.
So, what did I get him for his birthday on 12 January?? The ideal present for a man. A lovely gold and diamond bangle that I'd been looking at for weeks. Unfortunately, it didn't fit him but to my HUGE surprise and delight it was a perfect fit for me. (giggles maniacally!!) We split up at the end of that January. I kept the magazine AND the bangle. He got to find a new apartment and pay the credit card bill.
