desperate for Outer Banks info!!

minnierocks- Hi! Hopefully we can learn together! Have you been to myrtle beach before? i live about 3 hours away, so i grew up going there, and i must admit, I'm NOT really a fan of it :o( Overgrown, touristy, commercial, kinda yucky- i can tolerate it in the offseason now, but HATE it in the summer :o/ from what I've heard, OBX is much more natural, laid back, less commercial- exactly what we were looking for for this trip. You mention your trip is multigenerational- wondering what the ages are? Only ask cause I think the northern part of the banks can be more exciting for teens, cause theres more "to do"...which is exactly why we've decided to say in the southern part ;)

You are SO going to love your vacation Quietgirl!!! It's exactly what you are looking for. Check out the Gray House in Buxton. It's fun, quirky and perfect for two adults just kicking around. You are correct about way more activity north but IS it the kind of activity folks are looking for? Myrtle would be a 'no' in my book. I used to vacation on the beach at Murrels Inlet as a young adult-in the 70's. It was wonderful even back then but Myrtle was awful-40 years ago. And-
Avon-just like the cosmetic company!
We head to Ocracoke early(9am ish) ,so we can beach, then lunch, then shop and maybe have a couple beers. It's coolish all over in April so you might want to limit your beach time. Remember, our schedule is for summer tourist season and part of the reason we go early is to avoid waiting an hour for the ferry. Our wait in the ferry line to get back to Hatteras is as much fun as any of it, lol, we take some leftover crackers/cheese nips or 'its' and feed the sea gulls. This is much to the dismay of the other cars in line. Electric windows are a must because the gulls try to get in your car-hover all around your car and other crazy things. All seagulls are unique so we name them every year and well...it's our idiot tourist activity for the week. Stop and see the ponies on the way in or out of town-the corral is across from a good beach access. It's likely to be very windy-hoodies(dare I suggest hoodies?) and windbreakers, socks, maybe even a light pair of gloves, jeans could be your outfit of choice for much of the week. My husband said to tell you to take a small load of firewood for a beach fire.(read the rules on that one).
Speaking of rules: the NPS(National Park Service) has lots of new beach access rules due to turtle and bird nesting on the dunes. The birds are plovers and you will see lots of hand made signs from locals disparaging plovers and the NPS/Audubon society. It's a HUGE political firestorm; you will see and hear a lot about it. Follow the posted rules; the NPS is determined.
Last- in Hatteras Village, there's an old restored weather station(a home) and there you can tour a bit BUT the best thing there is the brochure mapping and describing all the historic homes and buildings in the village. We discovered this just last summer and we loved the nearly two hours we spent finding the homes and reading about them. On this adventure, we found a box of good sized conch shells at the end of a lane with a sign saying "Honor System. $1 per shell" the shells were really good ones. We bought a half dozen or so and a boy about 10years old came out to meet us while we were there. He and his brother find the shells and have this little business. It was our favorite buy of the week.

More later-maybe. I have to go research my own vacation now.
Maybe have a meal at The Inn at Pamlico Sound. These generous folks kept their inn open and free to stranded and homeless locals after Hurrican Irene for nearly a month. We're renting two houses from there this summer and I'm going to spend some serious money there because I patronize businesses that give back to their community. I hope you find it as lovely as I do. We never stay there because we're always travelling with wild boys who need room to stretch out. Say-maybe you'd like the Inn!? www.innonpamlicosound.com

Hey there...thanks for letting me learn right along with you! We have been to North Myrtle Beach before and it if was just my husband and I, we would go somewhere else. We do have teens with us, so that was why we were thinking of heading back there. After talking with my teens, Myrtle was not their first choice, which surprised me. :rotfl2: They both said that Tybee Island has been their favorite beach so far. We are taking my parents and teens so we need enough activity that we can do something if we want, but also a nice beach to sit and relax.
Someone mentioned to me earlier that they would never go to the Outer Banks due to the rip tides. They know someone who goes every year and always get a place with a pool because the beaches are red flagged often. Is there any merit to that? I know that things like that can be very subjective, but I also want a place where I can feel fairly confident that my teens can be in the ocean with their boogie boards.
My husband would prefer a house on the beach over a high rise condo complex, so that is another drawback to Myrtle Beach. There are very few and it looks like the Outer Banks have lots of beach houses to choose from. Thanks again for the input!

Oh I'm so intrigued by the Gray House- Its now officially on "my list". Im trying so hard to be careful and not plan too many activities, kinda go by the seat of my pants, but there are some things i want to make sure we don't miss too!! After looking through the website, there is no way i wanna miss the gray house!!
LOL- love the idea of feeding the birds on the ferry and naming them- definitely seems like a silly touristy thing, but fun!!
Ick- windy?? I was hoping to be able to buy and wear some new island clothes- hoodies don't seem islandy..lol! Thanks for the heads up though, cause thats something i would NOT have been prepared for. Do you think it will be windy everywhere, just ocracoke, or just the ferry??
LOVE the idea of a beach fire, read up on the rules for that and checked out the NPS site, as well as some local sites talking about the new regulations- ACK! looks like we are going during a firestorm! The good news is, I had no intentions of driving on the beach, whether it was free or not (bad idea for my car-lol), but i am a little worried about some of the reports of restricted beach access...is it possible that I we could rent a house that was oceanfront/oceanside, and NOT be able to walk on the beach in front of them? That seems a little daunting, and there is so much political firestorm over the topic I feel overwhelmed!!
Also adding the weather station to the list ;) Is this something that will be easy to find when we are there? love the idea of the map to help explore the village!!
WOW- the inn looks beautiful and fantastic, but probably a little more upscale than what we are wanting for this trip. id love to do that one day, looks like some great "pampering" opportunities, but this is more of a rustic trip for us...lol...at one point we were actually planning on camping, and somebody through the idea of OBX at us, and I decided a rental house there was going to be perfect for us- and now I'm so excited i can't stand it!! Maybe we will check them out for dinner one night tho...do you know if they serve that fabulous 3 course breakfast they talk about to non-guests, or is it only available for guests?

I can't help you directly, as I've only been to Ocracoke once (and OBX as a child), but my husband's cousin & her husband LIVE on Ocracoke, and HIS sister runs a real estate company down there (for rentals and sales)... We went to Ocracoke for their wedding - practically took over the island!!

I absolutely LOVED staying there - I wasn't all that thrilled with our hotel, but I had been out voted on renting a house (and I was pregnant), so I was a bit irked anyway, and looking to nit-pick it. There was nothing wrong with it, but it wasn't a house...

If I can find the realtor's info, I'll post again. Have a great time!

interesting question about the beaches- i haven't come across that info if its true, but then again, when we are going, the water will still be too cold for swimming, so I may have just overlooked it! I have read some things about the currents, but i do think that depends on the day- i haven't seen anything that leads me to believe the beaches are red flagged often tho!
Thats one of the things I'm loving about OBX already too- the houses!! There are TONS to choose from, and thats with me booking a last minute trip AND an atypical week!! There are some condos, but not interested in those at all- and I agree, thats a lot of what I equate with MB as ugly! Im pretty sure I've read somewhere that building are only allowed to be 4 stories in OBX, so I think that makes for a much nicer skyline than all the ugly high rises in MB...

My sister just called - gas is $4.18 a gallon down in Hatteras - make sure to have a full tank before heading south. Of course it could change in a few weeks but it always about .20 a gallon more that far south.

I live about an hour north of OBX just off the bypass in Virginia (route 168); most people take this to get to OBX. Gas here this morning was $3.89. It's cheaper to get your gas in VA than it is in NC.

As for looking for a place to stay, the sound side is usually cheaper than the ocean side if you're looking to save a few dollars. There are many public access parking lots to get to the beach.

I may have to drive down there one weekend soon; I've been thinking about it anyways, but this thread is making me think about the Kitty Hawk Kites store across from Jockey's Ridge (which my sister and I used to drag my parents up and down when we were small unmercifully) that I've loved since I was a little girl.

On Hatteras, there are not 'red flagged' beaches because the NPS stopped hiring lifeguards a few years ago on any of the beaches. It's swim at your own risk and YES you need to be very clear about Rip Tides and what to do if you get caught in one. Never swim alone. Oh, and just expect gasoline to be 20-25 cents higher on the island. It's a fact of life there. Include it in your budget without stressing about it. Yeah, we try to fill up before we get to the higher prices. We usually end up buying one tank of expensive fuel while we're there. Buy cheaper beer. :)

So tell me about this kite store- I've seen it a I've surfed some of the sites. We had planned on taking kites with us- is it a better idea to go to this store and buy them? Not sure if that is part of the experience, or if they will just have your average kite selection- insight into this will be much appreciated!! :)

There are three Kitty Hawk Kites on Hatteras. Waves(their kitesurfing school is there and they have some very nice condos too!), Avon and Hatteras Village. Upstairs next to the Waves location is a decent restaurant called Good Winds. They have a nice wine selection-don't order their house wine imho but the rest is great-and some great views as well as good food. There's a Kitty Hawk Kites on Ocracoke too. Kite flying is an excellent endeavor on Hatteras although sometimes it's too windy for the little ones. Ask them what has the heft to sail in the big air!! Make your kite a souvenir, eh?

I bookmarked this website, thanks!!! We're alway threatening to go back to stay on Ocracoke. We tried to camp there once and got chased away by the greenheads. Next time, we'll have a shelter with A/C, lol!

I'd bring your own from home. KHK is pricy! If you're into kite flying then you may not think too much of the price, but I'm the cheapo buy one from Target and go kind of gal. The store is just neat to walk through, they have kites of different sizes and shapes (things most non kite enthusiast would never think could be kites). It's in a shopping center across from Jockey's Ridge; there's also a fudge shop and a shop (I can't for the life of me remember what the place is called) that sells a bunch of stuff that changes color in the sun. There are other shops there but they usually change pretty regularly.

I'm sure I have lots of nostalgia about it because my parents used to always stop with my sisters and I because it's near the sound access near Jockey's Ridge. But, it's a neat place to walk around if that sounds like something your family likes to do.

To everyone that recommended the OBX connection message board to me- thanks so much!! It has been so very helpful in my planning!! I've come a long way since I started, but I did want to come back to my 2 original threads on the Disboards and get some opinions on the houses on our "maybe" list...

The houses in Rodanthe we are looking at are-

Everlasting Moon-
http://www.midgettrealty.com/rental/everlasting-moon

Last Resort-
http://www.midgettrealty.com/rental/last-resort (not sure this one is a good idea because of location and the fact that my cavalier would not do well on a road that isn't passable!!)

Madjoy- http://www.midgettrealty.com/rental/madjoy

Marooned-

Whistling Oyster-
http://www.midgettrealty.com/rental/whistling-oyster

In Hatteras-

Stella Solaris-

Stepping Stones-

Some of these, I'm more serious about than others. There are also a couple in Avon through Hatteras Realty that I am considering, but they won't even entertain our alternate turn day stay until a week out, so right now those are on the back burner.

Would love to get feedback from anybody that knows anything about any of these houses or locations- thanks a lot!!
