Lyrics
If I keep holding out,... will the light shine through?
Under this broken roof,... it's only rain that I feel
I've been waiting out the days,... Come Back.

I have been planning out,... All that I'd say to you
Since you slipped away,... Know that I still remain true
I've been wishing out the days,..

Please say, that if you hadn't of gone now
I wouldn't have lost you another way
From wherever you are,.... Come Back.

And these days, they linger on
And I'm the night, as I'm waiting on
The real possibility I may meet you in my dream
I go to sleep

If I don't fall apart,.... will the memories stay clear
So you had to go,......... and I had to remain here

But the strangest thing to date
So far away
And yet you feel so close
And I'm not gonna question it any other way

There must be an open door
For you to
Come Back

And the days, they linger on
And every night, what I'm waiting for
Is the real possibility I may meet you in my dream

And sometimes you're there
And you're talking back to me
Come the morning I could swear you're next to me

And it's okay.

It's okay.
It's okay.

I'll be here
Come Back
Come Back

Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits breaks my heart a little bit each time I hear it.

We Just Disagree by Dave Mason.

'In the Arms Of An Angel' Sarah McLachlan

'I Can't Make You Love Me' Bonny Raitt

"In the Arms of An Angel" gets me every time!! Dd has to sing it for show choir this year and has yet to get through it without crying.

Kansas- "Dust in the Wind"

And from movie soundtracks:
"Gollum's Song", Lord of the Rings- The Two Towers

I don't mean to nit-pick but since I've seen it multiple times on the thread I have to point out that the song is just titled Angel :flower3:

There is a Nickelback song that plays in the background of a video of a little boy who died in a car crash. I don't know the song, but when I hear it I know its the one because it makes me remember the video. Its very depressing :sad1:

I'm becoming suicidal just reading this thread. I think I'll be moving on. And for the record the song Dance by Leanne Womack kills me. I can't even sing it cause my voice starts to crack I get all choked up.

Oh and Rainbow Connection by Kermit the frog. It reminds me of my childhood.

Godspeed (Sweet Dreams) by The Dixie Chicks.

It's a very sweet song to a young son, but once you hear a friend singing it to her young son who has terminal cancer while he falls asleep in her arms, and then hear it played at his funeral, you can never hear it again without crying.

"Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)"

Dragon tales and the "water is wide"
Pirate's sail and lost boys fly
Fish bite moonbeams every night
And I love you

Godspeed, little man
Sweet dreams, little man
Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings
Godspeed
Sweet dreams

The rocket racer's all tuckered out
Superman's in pajamas on the couch
Goodnight moon, will find the mouse
And I love you

Godspeed, little man
Sweet dreams, little man
Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings
Godspeed
Sweet dreams

God bless mommy and match box cars
God bless dad and thanks for the stars
God hears "Amen," wherever we are
And I love you

Godspeed, little man
Sweet dreams, little man
Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings
Godspeed
Godspeed
Godspeed
Sweet dreams

Totally agree with "Godspeed". I lose it when I hear it. Last winter a 9 year old around here passed away after a tragic accident at home. 3 years before his sister had passed away from cancer at age 11. Godspeed was part of the slide show for the little boy's memorial. Too too sad.

Two about the death of John Lennon:

Here Today -Paul McCartney
"And if I said, I really loved you and was glad you came along,
And you were here today, for you were in my song."

Empty Garden -Elton John
"And I keep knocking, but no one answers.
And I keep calling, hey hey Johnny, can't you come out to play?"

Other songs:

Kite - U2
The River - Bruce Springsteen
Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day
Someone Like You - Adele
Permanent - David Cook
Traveling Soldier - Dixie Chicks
Who Knew - Pink
Silent All These Years - Tori Amos
Jack of All Trades - Bruce Springsteen

Les Miserables - I Dreamed A Dream

From the short clips I have heard, Anne Hathaway's may be my favorite version.

Definitely. And just add more songs from musicals:

A Little Fall of Rain - Les Miserables
Left Behind - Spring Awakening
Tell Me It's Not True - Blood Brothers
Maybe - Annie
As Long as He Needs Me - Oliver
Everything I Know - In the Heights
Your Daddy's Eyes - Ragtime
Leave - Once
I'm Not That Girl - Wicked
It Don't Make Sense - Parade
And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going - Dreamgirls
The Letter - Billy Elliot

The Letter - Billy Elliot

I saw Billy Elliot in London a number of years ago when I was there for work (so I saw the show alone). I don't tend to get emotional in movies/plays, but that song brought out the tears (my mum died when I was about Billy's age). The man beside me (a stranger) leaned over and handed me some tissues. I have the soundtrack and the song still gets to me.

I'm sorry about your mum. :grouphug: My mom lost her hers at about that same age as well, and so she was floored by that song when we saw the show in London too. I had seen the movie, so knew that scene was coming, but I wasn't ready for the song - or that it was reprised at the end when Billy wrote a reply (that part wasn't in the movie).

This the version from the recording, for anyone who wants to hear it:

Vincent by Don McLean about Vincent van Gogh

Fernando by Abba

Dust Bowl Dance by Mumford and Sons which I believe was inspired by John Steinbeck novels

In addition to what's been mentioned..

Ruby-Kenny Rogers
She Can't Be Really Gone- Tim McGraw

Someone said "Live Like You are Dying"...I don't think that's depressing at all. Turns out he wasn't dying and is grateful for the experience of living like he was; so I call that inspirational.

I personally find it depressing when a lot of people think a song is the opposite of what it is, like:

"Born in the USA" is not a patriotic song.
"Every Breath You Take" is about a stalker, not a love song
"I Will Always Love You" was commonly dedicated by SOs on the radio when it was popular after the Bodyguard, and I don't think they meant to be breaking up with their SOs.
"Saving All My Love for You" was a common wedding song in the 80s, it's about an affair.

Wise up- Aimee Mann

Season in the Sun- Terry Jakcs

Beth- Kiss

All By Myself - Eric Carmen (I know there are other versions but that's the one I grew up on)

I've Gotta Get a Message to You- BeeGees

Old ones:

Honey by Bobby Goldsboro

Another Auld Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg

and

When Somebody Loved Me from Toy Story Two

For me, it's "Copacabana" by Barry Manilow. DS is a professional musician who plays it and always thought it was upbeat and jazzy til I made him listen to the words.

His name was Rico, he wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancin' there
And when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit too far, Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
But just who shot who?

At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana (Copacabana)
The hottest spot north of Havana (here)
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....she lost her love

(Copa. . Copacabana)
(Copa Copacabana) (Copacabana, ahh ahh ahh ahh)
(Ahh ahh ahh ahh Copa Copacabana)
(Talking Havana have a banana)
(Music and passion...always the fash--shun)

Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear, faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she's lost her mind!

Seasons in the Sun- Terry Jacks

OMG - yes, this song was a sad, and kind-of freaked me out as a child -along with:

One Tin Soldier

Run Joey Run

The Night the Lights went out in Georgia

These songs give me the chills. When something is sad as a child it sticks with you in a way that it wouldn't had you been older. The Wizard of Oz background music when Miss Gulch (the Wicked Witch of the West) is riding her bicycle still gets me too!

In my teenage angst years I made a mixed tape called, "Depths of Depression". I can't remember all the songs on there but I remember it had a lot of Journey tunes. "Lights" and "Faithfully" were always played as slow dance kind of songs but for some reason they just always just made me kind of sad.

Heaven Knows I'm miserable now
