If you have a small dog, NEVER give them the rawhide chewy bones! Scruffy had one sized for his breed that I got from PetSmart, and almost choked to death on the thing! :sad1: The kids are just now calming down. I tossed him in the SUV and headed toward the animal emergency center, as I turned a corner he yacked it up (thank God) all over the floor mat. I called the house and told them he was okay and came back home. The girls were so relieved they cleaned the floor mat with no complaints whatsoever. Porr younger DD was so traumatized she was barfing as I left the house. After a bath he, and the girls seem fine. Whew!!  We love that little guy!

Wow...very scary!

I'm glad your little guy is okay!

Yes, rawhide is very dangerous for dogs...

Not only a chocking hazard. That stuff can get in their gut and tangle around their intestines and kill them. PLEASE NEVER BUY THEM!

PS: Your dog looks like my moms dog, Cookie!

Maybe rawhides should come with instructions for the heimlich!!!!

I had and have a little dog like yours. Same problem. I had a client give my little do now (Nicki) as "dingo" rawhide and I thought she was going to choke. No rawhides here either.

I dont even know why they are allowed to sell the things.
I have to ask... what was it like trying the Heimlick on the pooch? :scared1:

How scary! I'm so glad neither of mine have been in an emergency situation before.

We don't give rawhides, either.

It was the DINGO one! Well, I tried standing him on his hind legs and thrusting upward like on a human, all he'd do was wheeze. :( Then I threw him over my shoulder and jiggled like you do a baby, he let a few big burps, then back to the gasping and panting. DH said GO NOW! I called the emergency center to make sure there was actually someone there, then took off. I was down our driveway, up the street to the main road, and about three, four minutes later I notice he was not struggling anymore. NOT A GOOD SIGN. I turned on the light and saw the foam on the leather seat (it's okay, it's easier to clean than cloth). As I got even with the two service stations at the entrance to the interstate I saw the culprit in the floorboard. WHEW!

We have two Shih Tzus and they eat Dingos all the time...these bones never reach a size small enough to be eaten. Normally they gnaw at the bones for a while when they are fresh from the package and that is it. The dogs have it in their minds that they are too good for that "old" bone and require a fresh one lol.

If we see a bone getting too small, we throw it out while the dogs aren't looking. lol. While we have never had a problem with them choking, I know I would NEVER want anything to happen to our precious pups. I am glad to hear your doggy is okay!

HE had that one for maybe 20 minutes. I went back out into the yard with older DD (she insisted on seeing the bone), I had cleaned the foam off of the floor mat out there, the one piece of it I saw looked like one of the knots on the end, he had swallowed it whole! He is the worlds worst to gobble something if he thinks you're going to take it from him, this is an example of what happened. I'm just thankful that we were home at the time! :sad2:

That sounds like my grandparent's dog. He is a poodle and whenever you try to take away a bone that is too small, he goes for it like there is no tomorrow and then tries to swallow it before you have a chance to get your fingers in his mouth to take it away.

I feel thankful that our two dogs are not like that. They don't get Dingos often however, those are their "surprises" lol.

I never knew that!!!!! Thanks!

Also in the list are the greenies. If they get stuck anywhere, saliva and stomach acids interact with the greenie. Slightly disolving it then the mucas turns to a concrete type substance cementing the piece wherever it is stuck.

I bought some for him one time and they were just nasty. He really didn't like them very much either. DH just stated that they made his breath smell terrible and to m=not give him any more. I'm glad now that I did n't after reading the above post. Well, I guess he's down to dog food and milk bones!:thumbsup2

Not just small dogs... my dog William is 70lbs and choked a few months back. I had to reach my hand down his throat and pull it out :scared: . They are not allowed it anymore.
