Delta is charging us $450 for our BAGS

I went with my daughter, my sister and her 2 kids in November. None of us checked baggage on the way down. We used only carry-ons. We flew Allegiant, and they charged $30 per checked bag.

On the way back, my sister mailed herself a box back, and had to check luggage, but that's because she couldn't control her impulse buys. My daughter and I still had only our carry-ons.

The OP is taking a cruise. They want to use the service which gets their bags from outside their cabin door directly to their airlines.

I get that part - but surely they aren't the only cruise-goers who face the challenge of checking in and paying bag fees to use this service. Something is just off here.

Read my previous post (#17). A lot is off.

The airline charge for checked bags is generally added to your shipboard account.

We have 10 people traveling with us altogether, 1 is my baby, which I have to try and cram all of his stuff and my stuff in one bag that weighs less than 50lbs.

With that amount of luggage, did you think about shipping via UPS or FedEx? They can guarantee your delivery on your arrival day and it will be shipped directly to your resort. Just an option to check into.
We did look into it, but it is actually more expensive to ship the luggage from Vegas to Florida than the airline...a total of $70 for a 50lb box.

If you were paying $450 for baggage fees for 5 people, that WOULD be a lot. Since you're talking about bags for 9 people plus an infant - then the $50 per paying passenger isn't excessive.

As mentioned, I would suggest you get online while on the cruise and pay your baggage fees, or get someone else to go online (a friend or family) member and pay your fees online at the 24 hours mark. If you're on the disney cruise, you could also stop at guest relations and see if you can pay the fees through them. Are you using Disney transportation to the airport after the cruise? Just some suggestions. We are taking the cruise in November and will have 11 in our party, so we will be dealing with some luggage issues ourselves, but we fly Jetblue so don't have to deal with paying for our bags. Good luck

Haven't seen the OP back on here...

Looks like they may be doing Disney for a few days then taking a cruise. Maybe they could do laundry at their resort or on the ship to avoid having to take so many bags?:confused3

Please...no flames....not saying this to be rude.. but I am wondering how many people are traveling to bring 9 bags? We do up to 10 days in a carry on bag w/ snorkeling stuff. We also bring a backpack for our personal item.
Right, we are going to Disneyworld then to the cruise, we will be gone for a total of 14 days. We are going to do laundry, but, when we are at DisneyWorld, we are gone ALL day, from 7-8am until the parks close and there are 10 of us that will have to do laundry, along with the rest of the resort, so we are planning on spending a day and 1/2 just doing laundry.

That...or internet access is available on most cruise ships, in an internet cafe type setting, for a small fee.
Ok, I'm going to have to call and make sure there is internet, because my sister said she was sure there isn't, but, if other cruise ships get internet, then Disney HAS to have it too.

The do have it. We were just on the cruise 3 months ago. Obviously there is a fee to use the computer and internet service, but still easier than moving your luggage yourself, but do stop by the guest relations desk while you're on the ship to chat with a CM to see how they handle this. Obviously you're not the first family to cruise and have to deal with luggage fees. I'm sure it will all work out. Did you call the cruise folks to see how paying luggage fees works while onboard? For us, we are not using Disney transportation so we have to move our own luggage, but don't have to pay for it.

Yes, DCL does have Internet service available through computers next to the Promenade Lounge or WiFi service throughout most areas of the ship. You will pay 75 cents per minute a la carte or can buy packages of mnutes for a lower cost per minute.

Here is info on Internet from the Disney website...

Internet and cellular services are available aboard the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder, offering you convenient ways to stay connected to your friends, family and the rest of the outside world during your days at sea. Check email, keep up with your favorite sites and place calls to the mainland with incredible ease on the cafe's computers. Options like onboard wireless Internet connectivity, our Internet cafe, ship-to-shore calling and innovative Cellular At Sea phone service let you share your amazing vacation experiences as they happen, each and every day.

Hope it helps.

If they do have internet, then there is no problem with that, as far as the airline reps on the cruise, the cruise people said you can't pay your luggage fees at that check-in desk and 2 Delta reps said we HAVE to pay within 24hrs..no sooner (which doesn't make sense) and the ONLY way you can pay is online...which..what if you are someone who doesn't even have a computer or know how to use a computer.

The whole point as to why we are so ticked about the $450 cost is, the airlines took this gas crisis and are running with it. They are getting rediculous, the price to fly is already high and they are charging us the price of a full airline ticket JUST for our bags...it is robbery, they are money hungry.

As others have said already, this is a long standing practice now. I guess you and your family don't fly often to have not experienced this.
As others have also stated, the bag fees vary by airline. You can always search for a carrier with lower bag fees before you book.
$450 for 9 people is not outrageous in todays world.
Sorry you are upset.

Most airlines are money hungry, as they are not making enough to continue to operate for very long, forget about making a profit.

People want rock bottom ticket prices, so in order to operate they have to make the money other ways. The people have voted and they would rather the airlines charge for something they can skip, like checked bags or assigned seats. Neither thing is something you have to have, and many people are happy flying without either one. Makes sense to charge the people who use those services for using those services, instead of just jacking up ticket costs across the board.

Airlines have been losing money for years. I'm sure you were used to fares that didn't cover the true cost of flying. Don't feel bad. Lots of people got used to it. Flying is not cheap. They are not charging you the cost of a ticket to transport your bags, they are charging you $25 each way. I know it sounds better to say the cost of a ticket but you have 10 in your traveling party. That's like ranting because Disney will make you get more than one room for your your party of 10....

Actually, I have seen it done once and it was two people with seven bags and three hat boxes.

It was an older retired couple that had started dating about two years before. She had made outfits for each of them - matching - for breakfast, lunch, and dinner/evening. She had hats made as well to match.

They were the most delightful couple and everyone complimented them on how they were dressed.

Of course, we did not fly, but went directly from the port in Philly down to Bermuda.

I don't know how they fit them all in the room:scared1:

Yet another reason I only fly SW. Those prices are crazy. Do you really need all that stuff? For our last 10 day vacation we had a total of 2 bags. My DH and myself shared a bag and my DD6 and DS1 shared. This included diapers and everything. I did laundry 1/2 way thru the trip and the last day of our stay so we went home with clean laundry. I would seriously reconsider how much you are packing. We also each had a carry on. Just a thought if you were looking to save some of that $$.

Your ID indicates you are from Las Vegas, a city served by Southwest Airlines where 2 bags per passenger fly for free.

When booking a Delta ticket, they make it very clear that there is a charge for bags. Did you factor that in to the price of your ticket and do a comparison with Southwest, where most (if not all) of your bags could have flown at no charge?
