Delta is charging us $450 for our BAGS

In OP's defense, there are 10 people traveling to WDW followed by a 7-day cruise. That's a lot of people and a long period of time; part of which includes a need for formal and/or semi-formal attire. Given that, I don't think one checked bag per person is unreasonable.

I am not sure that it is unreasonable to take that many bags, just that it is one of many possible decisions that the passenger is making. That decision comes with certain "costs," one of which will be out of pocket $$ when flying on some airlines. Another cost will be having to carry that much luggage, which may be outweighed (literally and figuratively) by not having to carry as much on board the plane.

My parents and DN are flying to LHR to take the DCL Baltic cruise and are using FF miles to splurge on Upper Class seats. The checked baggage allowance for the 3 of them is 9 bags! But the cost for taking all those "free" bags would be that they are held hostage by having to deal with all that luggage. -- Suzanne

There's nothing excessive about checking one bag per person. However, the OP's thread title makes it sound like Delta is gouging them, when in fact they have 9 checked bags for 9 paying passengers.

I don't like checked bag fees, but I'm not going to drive 2.5 hours to the closest airport that Southwest serves (and pay to park) just to save the baggage fees.

I still wonder, how is this group of 10 made up? Is it the original poster, her husband and their 8 kids, all under age 18? So, then, she would have to pay the entire $450 herself.

Or, is it as I suspect, herself, at least one child and perhaps a spouse, and the rest is made up of adult sisters, brothers, parents, etc. If so, then, how much is she herself responsible for?

Is she paying the entire $450 herself, for her EXTENDED family? I doubt it. I presume there are other families paying a portion. Correct me if I'm wrong, please!!

When I flew in November, I had no checked luggage. My sister, however, ended up checking some. I didn't know-or care-how much she had to pay. It was her responsibility to pay it, not mine. It's kinda like saying, "there's 100 people on this plane! If each of them is paying $45 for a checked bag, that means Delta is charging us all an extra $4,500!"

Who cares?

I didn't bat an eyelid at the mention of 9 bags, even if there were only 4 or 5 people travelling.

We always leave Australia with one suitcase each with another packed inside that, so ALWAYS return with two suitcases each! Even my son when he was 8 would travel home with two suitcases :rotfl:

Gosh, my mother just returned from a cruise where she flew to the USA to board and she had 5 suitcases! Yes, thats 5 suitcases for one person.

So some people travel light, some people travel heavy :lmao: That is us, we can not possibly travel for a month with less than a suitcase each and we do love to shop when we are away, so always fill more suitcases whilst away. But we are allowed to take 2 suitcases per person on international flights so when we are travelling within the US like from MCO to LAX to take our flight home, if we fly with a sister airline and our flights are linked we are allowed to take that many bags each usually.
