We are flying Delta in July. My husband read that with the Delta Sky Miles card you can get the first checked bag free. So here's what we are thinking: get the card, fly with free bags, cancel the card. I know that the card has an annual fee of $95, but we would want to cancel right away. Here's the question: would I still be charged the fee although we will never even get to year two when they start charging the fee? Anyone have any experience with this?

We did the same thing, the first year for the Gold card is free, they don't start charging until the second year. We cancelled a month before year was up and never had to pay any fees.

Here is a link to the promotion to get first year free.

BUT, I think you have to pay for the tickets with the card, so if you already bought the tickets, I don't think you can get the free baggage. It's 1 bag free per ticket purchased.

We just got the card too....We are going on a trip with 5 of us and wanted the free bags. When I called I had a offer for a free companion ticket anywhere in the US, 25,000 free miles, 2,750 to add my DH (which is another free ticket or they let you with the card use $10,000 miles for $100 a ticket) and the first year fee waived. We are planning another trip for 2012 so we will have a free ticket, atleast $200 off another ticket or maybe free. After the first year then we get a companion ticket for $99 per year. I thought that was a great deal even if we keep the card we will always get free bags and the $99 will save us $$ too so for us it is worth it.

I was told that it was ok that the tickets were bought before we got the card and that we still will get the free bags.

You don't have to pay for the ticket with the Delta Skymiles AmEx card. It's also good for up to 7 (or maybe 9) people traveling on the same reservation.

The card is automatically linked to your Skymiles #. So even if you don't buy the tix with your card you will still get the free bags because the Delta system already recognizes you as a card member.

Does anyone know if you have to show your Gold Card when you check in at the airport?

This is great news! We just applied yesterday and got approved and we leave in 9 days for our trip. So we shouldn't have any trouble with getting the checked bag for free if we don't receive the card in the mail before we go?? I hope this true. Do you show the card at teh airport??

Hmm... that's tricky. I don't know if you have to activate the card first for the benefits to kick in.
Good luck!
You can always check your delta skymiles acct and see if there's a different notation in there.

Check your skymiles account and see if the AMEX card has been linked to it yet. It will say pay with miles under your near your skymiles number after you sign in. Pay with miles is a feature only available to Delta AMEX cardholders. You can check in the day before your flight right through your skymiles account online and it should automatically show you everyone in your party being eligible for the one free checked bag.

Ok another question-I got the card in the mail and activated. When I bought the tickets months ago I purchased 3 tickets on my credit card and my husbands ticket with frequent flier miles. So when I did the tickets they were not all done on the same transaction, but all are tye same last name. I used my frequent flier number for my ticket and the kids don't have a card. So long story short will we be able to get the free baggage through my husband?

As far as I know the free checked bag feature is for all persons on the same reservation as the primary cardholder. If you paid for three tickets and have one milage ticket, those are two separate reservations. I'm sure this happens frequently, so call Delta and have those two reservations linked. You MIGHT be able to use the free bag feature for all of you, but might not. I wouldn't take the word of a Delta agent you speak to on the phone since sometimes their knowledge of their own airlne is about the same as some Disney phone CM's is of WDW.

I believe it is for up to 9 people in your reservation, regardless of how you have paid. We didn't pay with the newly acquired card either, although all of ours are on the same reservation.

We don't fly out until next week. I asked the same question as we had to link 2 ressies (B1G1$99 & the 3rd person separate). She did not know so contacted a supervisor who said that linking it would work.

Hopefully I can update this when we return.
