I am telling you the dentists around here will not do it. The first time I had this done the hygienist said I needed to go get a deep cleaning. I asked why she couldn't do it as when I was growing up the hygienist cleaned your teeth and to me this is cleaning teeth. They say it is all too involved they do not do it. I would prefer to go to my dental hygienist to do this because it is a pain to have yet another appointment in another office. Even the insurance I have this time says I have to go to a periodontist.

I haven't had a dentist clean my teeth since I was 12 years old. That was the time that hygienists started doing it. Until then I had never even heard of a hygienist. Now the hygienist cleans the teeth and the dentist flies through giving a look and whatever. When I go to the periodontist he has an assistant that stands there and hands him things but that is it. He does everything.

Well, Skiwee looks like you just might be getting reamed! There is no way in heck a normal person (even with baby teeth) needs a deep cleaning every 4 years. Guess what I used to do before I got my hygiene license? I did the insurance for my dad - and they NEVER asked for WHO did the deep cleaning, all the Insurance co. wants is a CODE so they can charge the procedure!

My husband had this done about 2 months ago and absolutely hated it - the big baby! I told him he should floss more often. This was the first time either one of us had ever heard of such a thing. Anyway, they had to do it in sections and the hygienist did the procedure. Maybe it just depends on whether the dentist trusts his hygienist for such an invasive procedure.

I only have one very small cavity and I had to have a deep cleaning about 6 years ago. It doesn't have anything to do with your teeth, it has to do with your gums. Floss, floss, floss. I had also not had a regular cleaning in 5 years before this happened. They would not even do a regular cleaning on me until I had the deep cleaning. You know when they measure your gums and they are not supposed to be 4's or 5's? Well this is what happens when they are. By the way, the told me what great teeth I have and how clean my teeth are but my gums weren't so great. I won't say that I floss every day but I am much better about it than I used to be before that happened. It did not hurt me but a friend of mine said it did bother them a little. I have a high tolerance for pain so that may be why. My gums have been fine since then.

Um, thanks for the personal attack!!! I am not trying to harrass anybody! I just want everyone to get the CORRECT information! Hello! I do this for a living! I want everyone on the DIS to get the best info possible - and I don't know what other boards you are referring to - maybe you have me confused with someone else!

For what it's worth, I completed my "deep cleaning" last month. I had two quad's done at a time by a hygienist. The right side one week and then the left the following week. Both times my gums were not numbed and both times I really didn't need it. It's not the most pleasant thing to have done but IMHO it really wasn't that bad. I was slightly sore for an hour or so afterwards but was fine by the next morning. Everyone has different experiences but mine wasn't painful at all

Love the dental hygienist!! They have saved my teeth.. which were in bad shape many years ago...

Just an idea here... but maybe the dentist where skiwee lives just calls "deep cleaning" something totally different than dental professionals in other parts of the country.
and it happens...

I think it may just be a difference in terminology used by the same profession in varied parts of the US....

btw.. I agree with tiggersmom2 on this topic

? for tiggersmom2... what is the name for the procedure done when you have "pits" in the gum where the gum is receding... and then the periodontist goes in cleans, then pulls the gum tissue up around the tooth.. then sutures it into place....???
DH had this done.. painful and expensive...
He was 40, in good health, 1 cavity but had the gum problem....

BTW it was sarcastic and snotty of you to point out that a quadrant is one fourth in the first place. Do you actually believe that that word was so far above the average DISers intelligence? If your answer is yes, then I would highly suggest you at least learn how to spell it.

I realize you do this for a living. I am truly elated that you do this for a living. Jumping for joy actually! I am relaying a personal experience to the OP of what I go through. This is the correct information on what I go through. I really don't care what or how you do it for your patients. All I know is that a periodontist does this for me. Whether you like or or not, that is what happens. And yes, you attacked me and are very nasty. I consider it harrassment. I do not have you confused with anyone. I know who you are. I am done with you. Unlike some, I have no time for childish games.
