December Warriors Racing from Holiday to Holiday

Happy Monday Warriors!!

Weather has been really bad in NE Florida for the last few days. Runs the last few days have been averaging about 6 1/2 - 7 miles. Felt like I have been getting back in the flow of things, but I have had to take the last 2 days off because of the rain.

Doing a 1/2 in Jax Beach this coming Sunday, so I am taking it easy the rest of the week. Maybe a couple of short runs & bike rides to keep the blood flowin'.

That's it from the running world down here. The rest of my life is pretty stressed right now, but that's another involved story which would put us ALL to sleep.

You Guys Rock!!

Good morning warriors,

I'm back sort of. I got back from the Panama Canal cruise and went into training the way I always have and was getting back into shape. Then the bad weather hit here and last tuesday I was home from school (snow day) and ran to get the phone and broke my pinky toe! I was hoping to do the Princess in a couple of weeks now I'm sure I'm going to start - don't know if I'll finish- I've never had a DNF yet and would like to
keep that up. I actually work a shoe all day yesterday (first time since the break) and hope to run a bit today. If anyone has experience with a broken toe I'd appreciate the imput!

Hi Everyone

Pam - Hope your toe feels better soon. I've stubbed my toe but never broke it.

Jim - Hopefully things will workout for you.

Lily - Hope traing for VA Beach is going well.

Amanda - Sometimes life gets in the way but we do that we can.

AFM - Weather has been a continual struggle. I got out Monday evening after dinner for a short workout. I didn't have a lot of time so I decided to try another "Magic Mile" Galloway recommends doing every couple of weeks to access fitness. I finished in 11:40. It wasn't on a flat track so I think I can cut things a little bit more.

Today, I went to work early and did the treadmill. I did some extended run intervals. After warmup I did 1 mile at 13:00 min mile a 2:30 walk break then 1/2 mile at 12:00 min. mile pace. Then did a cool down. I only had 30 min, so I thought that would be the best use of my time.

With this cold snowy weather, I'm not getting the volume of running but my percentage of running is improving. I just need to keep things so I can make a final push mileage wise for my April 3rd half Marathon.

ETA: Has anyone heard from Carrie since the half marathon. I just looked and she hasn't posted in about a month. I hope nothing bad has happened.

Happy Valentine' Eve  Love to all warriors!

Oh Pam so sorry to read about your toe. sorry I can't offer any advice, perhaps someone on the main board has experience of this? When I did the marathon last year the cold numbed my shin splints so much that I couldn't really feel the pain- not great advice, but it got me through it!

Jeremy good work with your training despite the snow. Weather can reall be a beast can't it. Just be proud that you've got those runs in, whatever the surface.

Jim hope the half went well and your life stresses calm soon- you're always welcome to have a vent on here!

Lily hope the weather's improving, ooooh March is just around the corned.

Amanda That's a cracking workout, treadmill runs definitely have their place, especially when they keep you at it!

me Had a slow week- luckily it's meant to be a low mile week so it's fit in well. Got furry tonsils again, it's becoming an annual outing for them now! Stuck to the treadmill to keep warm and got 5 miles in yday. Then early valentine meal tonight and our 1 year engageaversary and only 6 months until we get married!!!!!! (and go to WDW :woohoo:)

Happy Thursday Warriors.....................

It's been an incredibly hard week down here. I'm not going into great details, but very briefly, my mother passed away last week after a 3 month battle with brain cancer. The event itself was not unexpected, as this was the diagnosed outcome when we first learned of it, but the timing WAS. My mom was basically asymptomatic until about a week before she died, but she went downhill very quickly at the end. I guess in some small measure that was a blessing. She passed gently and peacefully, and had a good quality of life throughout.

As a result, it was a "Bonzai" trip to Virginia this week. I used running as an escape from the events, and managed to run 3-4 times this last week, but obviously I missed the half marathon I was registered for on Sunday.

Actually, I WAS there, disguised as a 14 year old girl --> my friend I was going to run it with asked if his daughter could run it using my bib & chip & I was like "why not?" and said ok. So at least something nice came out of it.

Got back in town today & trying to get back in the flow of things. Going back to work on Sunday, gonna' try to go flying in the next couple of days.

Next up - River Run 15k in Jacksonville in March.

We are saddened to read about your mom's passing.

BTW, did you PR in the half?:)

Hi all

JimB- Sorry to hear about your mom's passing.

Kate - Hope you had a good cut back week and are ready to go at it again.

AFM - It's been a real good week.

Monday - 4 Miles 14:25 pace Run .25 miles/walk 2 minutes
Wednesday - 5 Miles 14:08 Pace Run 1:15/ Walk 1:30
Friday - 7.8 Miles 14:32 Pace Run 1:14/Walk 1:30.

Today's was probably a little bit fast. My goal pace is a 13:45. The weather today was almost perfect. 57 Degrees and sunny. Just a little bit of wind at times.

It is actually WARM IN FLORIDA today!!!!

Forgot what it is like to run in warm weather!! Ran 5.5 today. I would have put in another mile but my DD called to talk about stuff so she would not fall asleep driving, so I walked the last mile. Went to the gym afterwards to lift weights. Tendinitis in the right elbow is popping up (again), but what the heck, I'm gettin' used to it.

More importantly, I got to go FLY today for the first time in 2 weeks. Weather & my mom's passing conspired to keep me stuck on the ground with the rest of the mere mortals, so it was a VERY nice time. Fun day, & I am Sloooooowly remembering how to actually pilot an airplane (ya' know, ya' push forwards and the trees get bigger, ya' pulls backwards and the trees get smaller ;) )

That's awesome that you got to fly! One of the anesthesiologists at my hospital is a pilot and she flies whenever she can.

I ran 10 miles today. 2:15:30. A few minutes faster than my previous 10 mile run so maybe I'm making progress? And, while I feel a little sore, I feel better than I would expect.

Amanda

Hi Warriors!

Just popping in to say hi - I haven't been around too much but I've been checking in to see how everyone is doing.

Jim - :grouphug: So sorry to hear about your mother's passing.

:woohoo: to everyone on getting the training in!

I started training with the Arthritis Foundation again this past week - it's so great to get out with this group, again. There are just so many inspiring people in the group - this morning I ran with a woman who developed a rare form of severe arthritis in her mid-30's and spent a year in a fetal position before making progress with an experimental treatment and deciding that she couldn't lay in bed any longer... and so she ran her first half marathon last year, took 6 months recovery, and now is aiming for her second half this spring. Running with these people just gives you no excuses not to give your all. :thumbsup2 We're training for the the North Olympic Discovery Marathon in early June this year... Callum is still not into the running stroller, so I'm thinking 'half' this year.

Keep moving, Warriors!

Hi Warriors!

Jim~ so sorry to hear bout your mom! {{hugs}}

I ran for the first time saturday since breaking my toe- the run went well and I felt so good I added a mile so got a 5 mile run in - I deel better now about hauling all my running stuff to fl tomorrow.

Have a great week warriors- I'll try to stop in and let you know how the Princess goes.

Jim so so sorry to hear about your mum. That explains your last few months of stress then. I agree in some small way the speed is kinder and I don't know your belief, but hopefully she is resting and comfortable now. Really pleased you got to hit the skies to, loving the control decription, just make sure you don't ever get those confused- ok!?!?

Pam massive well done for that 5 miler on your poorly toe. Things are definitely looking good. Have a fantastic time at the Princess.

Amanda The fact that you've recovered better tells a lot about fitness I think, the less sort you are the more used to running your body is getting? great work on reducing your time for 10miles too.

Sarah Thanks for the inspiring person story- that really does make you think doesn't it! I just looked at your knitted hats..... 1 word... AMAZING! I'd love to support you if you have a sponsor page etc.

Jeremy Brilliant to read about your good week- progress is fab. You seem to be taking this in your stride so I hope your confidence is blossoming.

me well, it's been a bit of a heart breaker this week. Got back at it after tonsilitis to head out for a 5miler (fine) then on sunday 18 miles with my shiney new camelbak. ITBand started to niggle from 8miles and by 10 it was pulling me up. For the first time in my running experience I actually phoned someone to pick me up, but no-one was local, so I ran/hobbled 20 secs then walked a couple of minutes the last 3 miles home (in tears at times). On to the foam roller and ibuprofen in a big way now. 8 weeks til London Marathon. I'm sure i'll get back on it, but it came back out of the blue :headache:

Howdy doody Warrioirs!!

A fun filled day at w-o-r-k!!! SPent the morning cutting cars up and am now buried underneath a pile of meaningless, yet required paperwork.

Bicycled 13 yesterday, ran about 6.3 the day before. Weight workouts both days. I manged to gain about 4 pounds of weight last week while dealing with my mom's stuff. Continual eating out is bad for the soul, wallet & waistline!! So I am trying to shed that weight off my you-know-what. :-)

Next up, me & my luscious DW are doing the Princess 5k on saturday. I'm doing the River Run 15k in a few weeks.

Hi Warriors

JimB- Good to hear your staying active. Getting out has been good for keeping me recharged from the stresses of daily life.

Kate - Sorry to hear about your bad run. Hopefully it was just a one time thing and you can get it straighted out before London.

Pam - Good to hear your back out there. Take it easy at the Princess if your still having toe problems.

Sarah - Inspiring Story. When I walked my first half marathon in Cleveland, I walked about a mile with a cancer survivor who walked several half marathons a year who left me with the same thought.

Amanda - Great Job on the 10 miler. I'm hoping to get my first one of this training cycle in the next couple of weeks.

AFM - So far this week has been different. After the nice end of the week, the weather turned nasty. I decided to run Sunday after church because Monday was supposed to be Rain all day.

I did modified 800mx5 repeats I had done twice before 400m run/30-40sec walk/run rest of 800m. Followed by a 400m walking recovery lap. My Goal was to do them between 6:00 and 6:20 (12:00 - 12:40 per mile) based on Galloway and Mcmillan using prior race results and what I had done 3 weeks ago. I ended up doing 5 repeats of 5:19 (way too fast), 5:39, 5:32, 5:42, 5:46. The last one I started slower and skipped the walk break.

Today - I actually went out twice. First, This morning I did 3.5 miles Run 1:30/Walk 1:15. Felt pretty good and my try to make that my race interval. I had thought of doing equal walking and running but this allows me the option of swapping walk and run if things don't go well.

I was hoping to go farther but I needed to take my aunt to Columbus to get stitches out from her Surgury she had last week. She had had a rare form of cancer on her scalp and this was the second operation to remove additional skin around where the cancer was. There was no cancer found this time in what was removed, so she won't need radiation.

We got home in good time and decided to go out for a second short run. And yes I did say run. After warm up, I did 1.5 miles with no walk break. The area even had some hills in it. My Garmin showed 100ft of climb and 100ft of decent in the 1.5 miles. My pace was a 13:00 mile which is faster then my long run/walk pace but slower than my run. I've raced 5K's and 4 milers faster than that. That matches my longest continuous run. The first one was on a treadmill with no incline and the belt keeping me slow.

If what I've been doing, I've been half working on my own custom 1 day a week C25k. After my half, I'm going to try to extend this to a full 3 miles. I just need to remember to slow down on those days. If I don't watch I can let my running pace get away from me (see 800's above).

My original plan for this weekend was to do 10 miles but weather doesn't look like it's going to cooperate. I may need to be satisfied with squeezing in 6 miles between storms.

Hey Warriors!

Warm day in NE Florida. Low/mid 80's today.

I'm very proud of myself today. I had absolutely z-e-r-o motivation to run today, but slogged through about 4.5 miles in about 9:30 pace. Cut it kind of short due to the heat. Then did about an hour of weights at the gym tonight while my Lovely, Luscious DW cranked some miles away on the treadmill.

MAYBE winter is over down here, which means getting back into "warm weather running mode" here. Fluids, walk breaks & maybe getting my lazy A&& out of bed and running earlier. It's either hot, humid, or BOTH in the spring/summer here. Maybe that last 5 pounds WILL disappear.......................

Ya'll are doing great!! kEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

Jim, so sorry to read of the passing of your Mom. Hugs to you.

It has been hectic here and with the horrible winter I have not had much luck getting my steps in. Still have Shamrock in Virgina Beach, but will be much slower than I expect. I'll do what I can and move forward from that.

I lost my Kirby Dog this past Friday after 14 wonderful years with him. The days are difficult and we do miss him. Things will get better with time I know, just have to go through the process.

*Crawling back from under my rock*

A little birdie told me that Jeremy asked about me. I am fine, life is just different.

I was workign OT before adn after marathon. Had a personal worst tiem fo marathon, as I pulled a hammy the week before. Had teh most fun ever, though, and took a bunhc of pix. :)

Returned to work more OT, big deadline at teh end of the first week bacl. Wsa also very sick. To the point tha tI would have missed work if not for the deadline. (Pretty rare for me) So, come Thursday, I was way sick and still wrapping up to get the second wave of work out, and I was laid off. Can I tell you how muhc it sucks to still have to work your tail of for a couple days when you know the job is gone after that?

Now, I knew I shoudl start looking for a job after marathon, as I had ben on 3 days/week most of last year. But the timing really threw me. Then again, coming by surprise is kind of easier than stressing about it.Still wish I hadn't been so good as to sanitize my hands beofre going ot the owner's office.

So, I must admit that I am enjoying my time off. However, teh job search stinks. We would be ok without my income, but htere would be no more Disney trips and no more racing. Totally unacceptable. ;) SOk, by the time I finish the online job search (really wish I could just byuy a few newspapers and be done), I want nothing to do with the PC. I can Facebook from my phone, but DIS is not so phoen friendly. SO, while I think of all of you often, I am having a hard time getting here. :sad2:

On the bright side, I booked my Princess airfare the day beore I fot laid off, so I just got back from a great weekend! ;)

Jim - I am so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Lots of time to prepare, no tiem to prepare, a little time, nothing prepares us. It's just hard and it stinks, no matter how it happens. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: Looked for you on the bikes at Princess, but you got lucky again. ;)

Jeremey - Thanks for thinking of me. :goodvibes

Kate - Thinking of my sniley Kate in tears bereaks my heart. :( HOping you are recovering ok!

Pam - SO sorry we coudl not catch up at Princess. Hope you had a great time!

Sarah - What an amazing story!!!!

Kathy - Yay for your Make a WISH 5K!

John - lol on Jim's PR! Was so ggod to see you and Kathy in the half! (Probably didn't know who I was, but dh and I were cheering in MK and at teh entrance to Epcot.

Amanda - COngrats on your 10-Miler!

SO, Princess was an odd race. Tiook about 3 weks off ,and tehn re-injured my hammy on a 7-miler. Felt better than I thought, though. Then, caught up with Chimera about mile 8 and just enjoyed my time with her for the rest. Love knowing there are IWSHers on teh course when I am doing a solo race! :goodvibes

Going to get ous on to a March thread and will try to do much better getting back here.
