December Warriors Racing from Holiday to Holiday

Hope everyone did well during the marathon weekend.

I finished my first half marathon at disney with a time of 3:31:25.
I felt good up to the last hill and noticed my heart rate at 176 so I backed it down.

Now to Disneyland:cool1:

CONGRATS Kathy! I think I saw you in the corral (I was in corral F and I think we walked past you on the way to my corral). I wanted to come over to say hello but there were a lot of people between me and you and I was nervous about getting to the corral. Anyway I was totally thinking of you and sending you good thoughts!!! I'm so happy for you!

The half marathon was my 1st race ever. I was totally nervous about even finishing. I was especially nervous since 99.9% of my training runs were on a treadmill (with the tv as my babysitter!). I didn't know how I would do running outdoors without the set pacing of a treadmill. I had a sports watch and I knew from my one outdoor run that I would probably run faster than I had trained. Anyway, the whole experience was AMAZING! I honestly loved every minute. Even toward the end when we had to go up that ramp (past the green soldier) and every muscle in my body hurt. I just couldn't stop smiling the whole time! I not only finished but I'm very, very proud of my time - 2:44:15. According to Disney I averaged 12:31 min/mile which is much faster than the pace I usually run. I guess I need to ramp up the speed on the treadmill! I was so inspired by everyone around me - on the course and then all weekend. I met some awesome people - a great WISHer couple from NJ who spent lots of time with me before going to the corrals and then I met up with them on the course and I met the famous Tracy who made me a name tag (which I lost when using the port-a-potty) - and many, many others. I proudly wore my medal all weekend (even on the plane ride home).
I'm going to try my 1st post-race run today and I'm planning to go for a full marathon next year!

Thank you to everyone here for answering all my questions and cheering me on!

Happy Teusday & GREAT Job to all @ WDW this past weekend, especially Amanda & Kathy!!

I had, with a couple of minor exceptions, a really good weekend.

My DW & I walked the 5k on Friday. MY ankles were a bit tender for the rest of the day & next morning, which bothered me some. I guess I just plod along a bit too hard when I walk. Thud.

Since my training really was not good going in, my intent was to just make sure not too go out too hard on either the 1/2 or full, and see where that would take me.

I did a run 4:15/walk 1 minute pace for the 1/2 & a run 3:45/walk 1 for the full. I skipped a couple of rest periods early just to make sure I got warmed up in the cold (GREAT weather this year, btw!!), and then stuck to the plan no matter what.

The only bad thing that happened on the course was that I stepped in a pothole at about mile 15-16 on the full and rolled my right ankle really badly. After a few seconds of cussin' and swearin' & thinking the race was over, I "walked it off" for about 6 minutes and then went back to the plan. The body's natural endorphins are a wonderful thing!! I was real careful and tried to be really smooth for the rest of the time and it did not really bother me until AFTER I had finished. And I beat my PR too! By 20 minutes!! Go figure.

Bottom line: 2:14 1/2, 4:43 Full, 6:57 Goofy. Can't complain about that!!

BUT - no more Goofy's for me. They just are too hard on my feet. I felt like they had been beaten on with a piece of wood by the time the full was done. I cannot find any inserts that work that absorb enough shock to make it worth my while. I done it twice (which is twice more than I said I ever would), & that's enough. Probably going to be mostly a 1/2 M Midget from now on.

Next up for me: The National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer 1/2 M in Jacksonville Beach next month.

CONGRATS Jim! That's amazing!!!! My goal (eventually) is to do a Goofy but I think I'm at least 2 years off from that. Hope you feel better!

Amanda

Amanda - Congratulations  on the half. I'm alway always faster in a race than I am in training. Don't turn up that treadmill on "every" workout. Most of your running should be "easy". As if any running is easy.

Jim - :woohoo: Great Job :woohoo: on the Goofy. Hope the twist doesn't keep you sidelined too long.

AFM - I got my long run in yesterday I cut short on Saturday. One good thing about my current schedule is I can rearrange days fairly easily. The weather was cool but sunny at 27 degrees. I ended up doing 6.5 miles at about a 15:00 pace. 3 of those miles were on packed snow. It actually wasn't too bad to run on. Today and tomorrow we're supposed to get 3 to 6 inches of additional snow. That's another reason I got my long run in when I did. Hopefully, I can get out tomorrow for at least a short run/walk.

I posted in a seperate thread that Thursday I'm supposed to talk on campus about competing in Distance events as an adult.

Good Friday morning Warriors,

I'm sorry I missed all the meetups last weekend. Arrived on Wednesday and left for home late Sunday night. I was very pleassed with my Goofy times. I just ran the 1/2 easy & enjoyed it and raced the full. Ended up getting an 11 minute PR!!!

The real adventure began when I tried to get home. I landed in Atlanta at 8pm Sunday night and did not leave until Tuesday evening at 5pm. I have had layovers before, but never a 45 hour one. We made the best of a bad situation and survived :)

Hope all had a great Marathon weekend, hope to see some of ya in southern Cali in September.

Congratulations Stan.:goofy: sounds like quite an ordeal getting home.

I got out Wednesday for 3 miles and today I did almost 7 miles. My speed isn't up where I'd like it to be but I'm sure part of it is the cold and snow. I'm still hoping to be able to sign up for the Disneyland Half Marathon. Still trying to get all the finances worked out first.

Wow Stan! That sounds like quite an adventure. Congrats on your Goofy!!!
Jeremy - Fingers crossed that you make it to DL. I wish I could join you but my daughter starts kindergarten on Tuesday...

I walked 2 miles on Tuesday and tried my 1st run today. I actually braved the snow and 29 degree temperature to run outside. I did ok until about 25 min into the run when my right leg started bothering me. It hurt for a few days after the 1/2 marathon and I think I just pushed myself too hard today. Nothing terrible, just a sore muscle!

Amanda

Hey everyone!

We got home late Wednesday night and I'm still catching up.

I finished the half marathon on Saturday, but I had a pretty rough go at it. Being sick for the 2 weeks before the race (and I'm still fighting some chest congestion and sinus issues) didn't do me any favors, and I had quite a bit of lower back pain (it's been coming and going since Callum was born and it was definitely full-on on Saturday - carting a baby around the parks for 3 days before probably didn't help!) from about 9 miles on, forcing me to walk the last 4 miles. :sad2: I finished in 2:57, which was about 30 minutes slower than anticipated.

DH and I discussed it and we're going to take 2012 off for the WDW events. We're still trying to decide whether we're going to do the DL half this year. It's either that or Hawaii in the fall... I think we'll wait and decide which plan would work better for Callum at that point. I want the C2C medal and I'm not sure when I'll get another chance at it, right now.

Overall, we had a nice trip, though. Traveling with a baby was definitely a new experience! It meant later starts in the morning and earlier returns in the evening, but it was a lot of fun seeing his reactions to everything.

I think my next big event is going to be the North Olympic Discovery Marathon/Half Marathon in June. My charity of choice, the Arthritis Foundation, has decided to do that event instead of the Rock 'n' Roll Seattle this year, and I haven't decided if I'll do the full or the half, yet. We'll see how Callum feels about his jogging stroller once he turns 6 months and I start training with him next month.

Congratulations Warriors!

Jim ~ wow I couldn't even fathom your times...even with a twisted ankle while running the full

Embroidery Grandma/Kathy ~ Great job out there! I can't wait to meet you at Disneyland!

DrMomof3/Amanda ~ Congratulations on your first 1/2! Are you addicted yet?!? LOL

goofy57/ Stan ~ the adventure travel home! WOW, glad you made it home safe!

Sarrah Rose ~ Sorry I missed you this weekend! I hope you and you'r family had a great vacation!

Carrie ~ I saw you here, there and every where! Although I didn't see you during the run or the meets, we did run into each other at one time or another. I think you were on Everest when we just got off...I saw your husband waiting for you! I hope you had a great time at WDW!

Sorry if I missed the updates on any Warriors.....hopefully we'll met at Disneyland.

Hi Everyone

Congratulation Sarah

This weeks been pretty good. I've starting trying to incorporate speed work into my workout.

Monday I did 800mX5. I'm roughly using Galloway and he recommend completing each one in 6:37 (McMillian recommends a 6:00 - 6:15). Galloway also allow a short walk break after 400m. My splits were a pretty consistant 6:23 - 6:28.

Wednesday I went out for 4 miles. using the walk/run interval I'm planning for my April half.

Thursday - We got 4-5 inches of snow so I went to the gym on campus to hit the treadmill, even though I normally don't run 2 days in a row. I only had 30 min so I decided to work on speed. I did 1 min walking and 1 min running. I picked up the running speed each interval. I started a 4.5mph and finished at 6.5 mph which is faster than I normally run.

HEY HEY!!!!

Sorry I've been missing lately, bad kate! It looks like things have been quiet in warrior land and I can't find a feb thread I figured i'd just post here.

How's everyone doing post WDW marathon weekend?

Any new and exciting challenges coming up for anyone now the excitement has settled?

I've been increasing mileage steadily- at 14 miles last weekend, hoping for 16 on sunday IF my new camelbak arrives. I couldn't get a new bladder pack for my flash flo and it was completely disgusting so i got rid! Trying out a backpack version that I hope will be my london Marathon buddy.

Also been putting my research study together that I hope to recruit some of you guys into for my Masters so watch this space.

OK..... Who's got snow!?!?! I miss it :cold:

Hi Kate

Yea it's been pretty quiet in warriorland. I've still been plugging away. This winter we've had snow on the ground since mid December with only a small break around New Years. We haven't been snowed in like the east coast of the U.S. Our has been 2 to 3 inches every three or 4 days. The latest was about 1.5" of ice. I'm still getting ready for my April 3rd half marathon. I'm not getting the training in I was planning on but I still have time to work up to a 10 mile long run. I had originally hoped to get a 12 and maybe a 14 in.

ooooh jeremy that's not good! No-one wants ice, that's no where near as fun! There's no harm at all in working up to a 10 mile long run, from what I hear you'll have the freshest legs on the start line and be prepared enough to complete the distance. April 3rd is still a good way away. Glad you're still getting those miles in

Hi Warriors,

We just got back from the east coast of Florida. Visited family and did a 5K for Make A Wish foundation:cool1:. Great times.

Kathy

Kathy glad you had a super time with your family and what an amazing cause for your 5k. I love that charity! Was it a fun event?

I did 16.4 miles today and about another 0.5mile walk afterwards as I miscalculated my route... again! It was a good cool down though. Went pretty well for the first 13 then down hill, but finished in 2:24 so quite happy with that. Considering another physio massage though as my lower calf/shin were niggly.

What's everyone else up to?

I went over to the college town about 2 miles away and ran around the campus. There were only a few students milling about and very little traffic. The roads and sidewalks were in fairly good shape. I ended up doing almost 5 miles (4.8). Not counting warmup and cooldown I averaged a 13:30 pace. My goal pace for the April half is 3:00 which need a 13:45 pace.

It's nice to hear updates from everyone!

I was supposed to go 8.5 miles yesterday but I got a later start than I wanted and had to quit after 7.5 miles in order to get my daughter to ballet on time. I finished 7.5 miles in 1 hr 44 min 19 sec. Not terrible. I've done a much better job keeping up with my work-outs since the 1/2 marathon. Still mostly running on the treadmill but I'm trying to increase the speed.

Amanda

Hi Warriors! It's nice to read how everyone is doing.
I am glad to have gotten a chance to meet up with some of you over race weekend. Wish there was more time to do more.
It has been a wintery time around these parts for sure.
Next up is the Shamrock half in VA Beach in March for me.
