Debt Dumpers 2025

No. 4 - I'm scared about spending. More scared that we don't make enough money. You can only cut so much until you have to start upping income. I'm afraid to talk to my boss about me finding another job cause I'm afraid he'll take that to mean I don't like it and want to leave, and he'll let me go right then.
There is no need for your boss to know that you’re looking for another job until you give your notice to leave for the new job.

If you mean telling your boss about looking for a side hustle, again, unless you plan to go work for a competitor, there is no need for your boss to know.

But everyone has piled on.
That’s because people on these boards have been giving the same advice for a long time. More than a year. And yet you still have been taking vacations, spending money you don’t have, and letting your wife ruin your financially (or use her as an excuse, I’m not sure which at this point). Posters are tired of giving advice that doesn’t get taken.

Exactly. Why in the world would you tell your boss you are looking for another job? You don’t owe them anything. It’s none of their business.

Honestly, we haven't take a vacation since our work trip to Chicago in July. But I digress. I am changing and doing better. It's just taken a while, unfortunately. I want it to happen overnight and suddenly see all this money in my budget by cutting stuff here and there. I've read and taken a lot of the advice. I think that can be seen by anyone.

So you cancelled your Disney trip that you were planning to go on a few weeks ago?

Because that's just the relationship people in my company have. It's an extremely small company (only 6 of us upstairs and 20 in the entire company). I've told him from the beginning that if something was happening, I'd let him know. And he told me if anything was going down that affected me (and my job status), he'd give me a heads up. He said as long as we're honest and up front with each other, then that's all he can ask. It's a lot different here, and I really, really like it. Much more family oriented.

What about the trip to WDW that you were scheduled to take earlier this month? You know, the one that you had to go on because you got a room thru your niece who is a CM and it was already paid for and you would lose $$ in airfare if you didn't go? Did you take that trip?

I'm curious because if you ended up staying home, did Disney refund the money you paid for the room? And if that's the case, where did that refund money go?

Don't believe him..... I worked at a Family Business for 2 years and planned on working there a lot longer, until the economy slowed down, and I was shown the door on a Friday with no warning.

You owe this person and the company nothing.

I also worked at a “we are family” business where the owner and founder still ran the show. It was code for “we’re not very professional here and there is no HR to go to with issues” They paid below market value, too.

They did give people two months notice before a round of layoffs. We had a nice celebration for them in the conference room. Which didn’t really help anything and just made things awkward for these folks who had to keep coming in knowing their job got cut. The rest of us could all see how bitter they were. There was a lot of gossiping. A healthy severance package and a clean cut would have been better, I’m sure.

On the flip side, the owner got mad when someone left with the standard two weeks notice. Demanded at least two months which is very unrealistic. One person had to finish a project after they left, in their spare time, which I don’t think was legal.

WDW_fan_in_TX, if you find a new job, your new employer will expect you to start within two weeks of offering you the job, no matter how loyal you feel toward your old company.

I have learned that loyalty is a one way street no matter how long you have been with the business

As a small business owner, all I ask is that they let me know when they can if they plan on making a change. I will support them and even help them to find a better job for in the community. However, I don’t expect nor try to require a long notice period. My intent would be if we ever had to let everyone go to give them is much notice as possible but I know that may not be realistic based on the situation. So I would not communicate now for something that may or may not ever happen.

I've been working at my job for over 25 years and my work place has a similar vibe. That being said, I wasted the first 10 years or so by trying to be the "no problem"/overachiever child, thinking that I would eventually get my due. I was wrong. It was only when I started being more vocal - in growing my skills and contributing to projects as well as advocating for myself - that things changed.

It was an uncomfortable process - I liked working quietly in the background - but it needed to happen. First, I started volunteering for more responsibilities. At the same time, I started doing was paying attention to job listings - not because I was necessarily job hunting, but because it helped me get a sense of what "market rate" was for jobs with similar responsibilities. Once I had some successes under my belt, I started the conversation about the disconnect between what I was making and what someone with my responsibilities should be making. I wasn't talking from an "I need to make more money" position, but a "look at what these other organizations are paying" position. It took some time (our entire organization's pay scale was out of whack), but I finally got a significant increase. And taking on a larger role gave me higher visibility in the organization and (I think) an additional layer of job protection. My goal is for our board members (I work in a non-profit) to know who I am, know what I do, and know why I am a valuable asset. Is my job bulletproof? No. But I feel like I've read the room and made it more likely that I can stay in this job long-term.

anyone else doing last minute errands today? today is the annual KFC run for our house-my youngest who is on the spectrum is so NOT a traditional Thanksgiving foodie but we found years ago that KFC fills the bill (just gotta make sure to put it in the garage fridge so it doesn't get consumed ahead of the day). thank goodness for discount codes cuz their prices have certainly gone up! speaking of discount codes-we are taking advantage of Papa Murphy's 1 topping medium pizza for $1 offer today cuz we have pizza toppings on hand so we can supplement (a couple of us in the house each have a Papa Murphy's account so we each took advantage of the one time use offer and went with a topping on each we do NOT have at the ready).

Woah! I just got DW on board with the new Disney+ plan. We decided to drop our current plan and sign up with my other email address. It drops it from $27/month to $5/month. DW wasn't too excited about losing all of her shows, losing ESPN or now having to sit through ads. But I talked her into it. We'll just figure out somewhere else to get the ESPN we're losing. Maybe they'll have a BF sale too. I just paid the December bill yesterday, so we'll have to wait until December 24 to sign up for it so we're paying 2x. But still, that's a big win right there.

So in the last couple of weeks, we've dropped our internet plan from $100 to $40, dropped our Disney+ plan from $27 to $5 and dropped our storage unit rental. That will save us a total of $172 per month. I'm thinking about switching my cell phone plan too. Right now I pay $125/month, but Spectrum has offered $0 a month for 12 months then $30 per month after that with no contract. Awfully enticing.

Tuesday is our usual grocery run. I grabbed what I needed for Thanksgiving last week. So today was just the usual list. The grocery store was super crowded today. Lots of Instacart shoppers running around. There wasn't much in the weekly ad that I needed so the savings over full price was minimal.

Our normal is Monday, but I also went to the one by my work at lunch yesterday to get chips for lunch. And it was packed. We will have to go this evening as we're doing Thanksgiving on our own, just the 2 of us. Our 5 friends that were coming over wound up changing their plans. So I will have to find a small ham and everything else (potatoes, corn casserole, green bean casserole, rolls, pie) to go with it. We talked about doing Cracker Barrell because it might be cheaper than buying and making all that food. But we don't want to eat out. Plus, we have to cook to go to my parents for Thanksgiving this weekend. They're having fajitas and tamales, so normal Thanksgiving food won't work, lol.

we grabbed all the thanksgiving stuff last week as well (already had a good bit on hand cuz i've been grabbing it when they had sales). I imagine tonight will be a madhouse b/c most of the schools around here have taken to doing a 5 day weekend for Thanksgiving so unless someone wants to schlep the kids along they will be going today. thankfully the only groceries I need to grab today is a package of hot dog buns :thumbsup2

She will get over it. She won't be too excited to not be able to retire either. Does she give a $hit about that??? Or is that only your problem too? People everywhere sit through ads and live to tell the tale.

This will only be worthwhile if you enter these new prices in your budget and then, at the time of the month where you would have paid that higher bill, apply the savings to CC#1. Don't just let it get lost in the shuffle and you go out to dinner to celebrate.
It's ok to make more than one payment per month.

So let's say you make the usual monthly payment of $30 on Dec 1 to CC#1 and you do that.
Well then let's pretend you normally pay your internet bill on the 10th and up until now you've been budgeting $100 for that. Now it's only $40. So on the 10th you'll take that $100 and pay $40 to internet bill and $60 to CC#1. Keep doing this with every little bit you save here and there, even if it's only $5, just do it. You will be amazed how fast you pay it down.

I went grocery shopping yesterday, thinking I’d beat the crowds. The store was crazy busy. I already had most things for Thanksgiving but wanted to get the green beans fresh.

I’m going to start prepping the food tonight and hope the house will clean itself somehow, lol!
