Debt Dumpers - 2017

Don't worry about TMI...most of us here are ladies who have had kids (sorry @dayvewc ;)) You are trying to rationalize this...don't worry...you are in the range... :) :) :) (But I completely get it, I would be doing the same thing)

Totally off of any subject currently but ... I could use some ideas/input.
P.S. I was working on writing this out when ...
... happened. :yay: Lots of congratulations and pixie dust being sent your way!! You do realize that the peanut has like a built in extended family of aunts and at least 1 uncle that are going to want to know everything. I wouldn't worry about TMI, we want details too!!

Hey, I love kids. I just don't want one of my own. Now, if I could figure out a way to always have someone else to change the diapers, I'd reconsider. ;-)

Thanks guys. All of the wonderful words of support have made me feel much more at ease. Just looking forward to Sunday and getting a better picture of our path forward.

  1. As a watermark behind the table of contents, I can't think of a good picture that I can use. I am already using a map of the US for the front cover, so I was thinking maybe a state flag? or the US flag? Picture of me in full "explorer" gear?
What about using a picture of the U.S. Capital building? Something that kind of binds all the states into one.

That's what I was going for - a unifying picture. I was looking for a collage of state flags but I couldn't find one I liked that wasn't copy righted. I kind of want to avoid the federal capital building as I'll have that picture on my D.C. page. The constitution was mentioned and I'm liking that unless a better idea comes along.

Maybe you can make a collage or something. When I made our Canada vacation photo books, I put the same picture on both - one I took of our passports and Canadian money. Then on the back of each book I put a picture of something from each part of the trip. I had so many pictures I had to split it into two parts with two cities in each part.

After years of never fully being on the same page as my husband when it comes to finances, I think that we are seeing eye to eye now! We had a brief conversation yesterday about our debt and plans for the tax returns and we are in agreement (for once) on how to spend it. I have also noticed that he is trying to spend less money on stuff during the week and trying to stay in his allotted budget.

Hubs has a payment to Snap On that is $100 a week (he was a mechanic before his promotion) and since he hasn't had to continually buy new tools to do his job, the amount he owes has gone down enough that our payment will now be cut in half. Because there is no interest or fees as long as we continue to make that minimum payment and don't get behind, we are going to put that freed up money towards some other debt. We might actually get to jump start our debt snowball and get it going between our tax refund and this!

I made myself a promise that I would NOT buy myself any new clothes or shoes for at least 6 months. I have plenty of nice things. I almost gave in and came () this close to buying a dress I liked that was half off.. but I stopped myself and didn't do it! I didn't need it. I just wanted it, but that $38 would be better spent on debt!

This weekend is our GWL trip. The room is paid for, I have food, snacks and drinks packed, the gas tank is already filled up, and I have some money budgeted for dinner somewhere (maybe pizza, haven't decided yet). I even have coffee and stuff packed for hubs and I so we won't have to buy any there! I am trying to be mindful so that there will be no unexpected expenses or splurges!

I have also been listening to a lot of Dave Ramsey podcasts for motivation. Hubs isn't as big a fan, but he says whatever helps me stay on track works for him!

Congrats on resisting! I know that it can be hard some times. There are so many things that seem like a great deal, but when you think about it more, it really isn't. When we buy things that we don't really need while we still have credit card debt, it is as if we financed the purchase. This is true even if we pay in cash or use a card and pay if off with the next statement. That is because the money that would have been spent was actually a trade off between having the dress or having that $38 to pay down existing debt and therefore incur less interest.

This is the same with anything. Clothes, eating out, vacations. Now, as I said before, we need some room in our existing budgets for some treats so that we don't feel deprived and give up all together. But I always found that thought process to be really helpful when I was tempted to buy something but asking myself the question, "Do I still want this item if I means that I will be paying interest on it for months/years?"

Totally off of any subject currently but ... I could use some ideas/input.

The Backstory:
  • An aunt of mine died last May, and one of her goals (which she accomplished) was to visit every state. My cousins took her in the year before she passed to the last three states and took pictures. They then printed a small coffee table book using the pictures.
  • I am in the process of making my own "Book of Accomplished Bucket List Items" inspired by my aunt and motivated by the loss of my dad. Since I can do all of the planning and formatting and whatnot using MS Publisher, I can also use this to avoid spending money somewhere else. :-) So, that counts. If not as debt dumping, then at least as not debt adding. :rotfl2:
  • The book will be in at least 3 sections - part 1 is visiting every state and state capital. part 2 is visiting international destinations. part 3 is kind of catchall miscellaneous.
  • Every state gets a 2-page spread. There is a map of the state in the upper left corner, in the middle third of the page bleeding into the gutter will be a picture of me in front of the "Welcome to <State Name>" picture, and in the bottom left corner will be a picture of me at the state capital. The space left has the state & capital name and date of visit (top), and basic descriptions of the pictures (who is in them, any special/unique circumstances, etc.) The facing page of the spread will be an accumulation of pictures from travel through the state.
My solicitation for input and ideas -
  1. As a watermark behind the table of contents, I can't think of a good picture that I can use. I am already using a map of the US for the front cover, so I was thinking maybe a state flag? or the US flag? Picture of me in full "explorer" gear?
  2. Do I set up the table of contents alphabetically, or in the order I visit?
  3. Should I wait until the book is "finished" (It'll probably never be completely done, as I can always find something else to add to it, but the Whole 51 and International 15 are kind of sets to themselves) to print and bind it? Or should I forgo binding and get a really good quality binder and print pages as I accomplish them?
  4. Should I approach this as a single large book? Keeping all the info digitally will be pretty easy to keep for a long time, so I could wait until I'm locked away in a nursing home to print it to remind me of all the stuff I'll have done. Or, should I take each current section and make it a mini book, printing them as they are done?

Anyway, just wondered what other people might thing.

Hi Dyvewc
I would use a backdrop of either all the states or one for each state.
Route 66 sign would look good too. I love state flags too.
Every time I am ready to start my Disney memories book someone drops by with more photos or bits of information for me to add.
I'm not sure when my story will be finished so I am going binder style with mine.
Have fun creating and designing.
Hugs Mel

Paid off a credit card yesterday. It was the one with lower balance and lower interest but I just wanted to get rid of it. It wasn't that much actually. We now need to pay off the card with the car repairs on it, and start putting back into the 529s. When I lost my job we cut back that contribution by 90% and haven't reupped it yet because we were doubling up on my retirement once I started working again, and then we needed to buy the car. Need to see how this month goes with two car payments before we figure out how much we can increase it. We only have one more sports payment (travel team) and then only one more month of paying off our iPhones, and that combined will be about $120.

Oh boy. We owe. We owe $1200 in taxes this year. I could cry. We've never paid in before. DH has been laid off on and off for the last 18 months, and between his unemployment being taxed at a low rate as well as some changing to our W4s we did because we needed the extra money to get by, we now have a big fat tax bill. I think I'll spend the rest of this weekend in bed with the covers over my head. (but first I'll change my W4 BACK to what it was)

$450 in needed car repairs to DH's Honda CR-V...I

I'll be driving it 3 days (300 miles) a week so it needed new tires.

I'm kind of leaning toward one of these.

I like the first one and the Rte. 66 better than the flags making the country. Kind of afraid that the first one will be too dark, even when I make it a watermark, for the writing to show up well above it.

Good news today! I found someone in our meetup group who will watch my dog at her house for the week I'm in WDW. We just went over there today so my dog will know her house and not be scared and also to make sure the two dogs get along. They LOVED each other. She told me today that she will not charge me at all - she's just happy that her 1 yr old dog of the same breed will have a buddy to play with for a week! That will save me over $300 from what I would pay to have her boarded. I'll be putting it toward a cc balance instead! Woohoo!

You'll have to bring her back a special Disney gift.

Yes, I offered - they actually moved here from Orlando though so I think they are set. I will probably still try to find them something though. :)
