Debt Dumpers - 2017

confession: I went into debt a little bit deeper today.

We found the perfect prom dress for my senior. It was originally $717 (I KNOW!!!) and was down to $314.00. Em tried it on a couple of weeks ago and the shop owner told her that if someone came in and bought it, it was gone. They could not order another one. At that time we weren't willing to commit. we looked around a bit more and found another one we loved but it was $500 and something and I just said, "I'm sorry sweetie, but that's way too much".

Well we went back today and the original dress was still there, she tried it on again along with about 6 other dresses of various price points and i caved. I know that there might be cheaper options on-line and I also know that we might have been able to find one at a second-hand shop if we got lucky, but I made the decision to say 'yes'.

So $314.00, we paid 25% down today using the debit card (I had started to save up a little bit so I wouldn't have to put it on credit). The shop is running a deal that if you bring in something for the local humane society (used sheets, towels, dog/cat food) they would take $25.00 off the price. So we'll do that, for sure. And I signed a layaway agreement to pay $30.00 every two weeks. So it's not unreasonable and i shouldn't have to use credit.

I know that making this decision can be seen as a step in the wrong direction but I also think that sometimes, if you make a thoughtful and informed decision, the right answer is sometimes, "sure sweetie, we can do this for you."

@Jen and Ashwin yay, thinking postive thoughts for you!!

@Dentam that's awesome to find someone who will look after your dog and love the pup like you will! When we went away in January we were away for 11 days total (longest we have left our dog in the kennel) and although she was fine (they LOVE her, we have been using the same kennel for years) the bill was over $400. Our January WDW/Disney Fantasy is the most we have ever spent on any vacation. Ever. :scared: Yes we have the money to pay it off in full but if we keep taking trips like this we can kiss the remaining inheritance goodbye :headache: So we are still trying to figure out the best way to invest the remaining money (along with the monthly money that used to go to our mortgage before we paid that off. Right now half of that mortgage money is being saved automatically but the other half is being absorbed into our chequing account).

bugger! we sold DHs 98 CRV with 635,000km on it! great cars!
Awesome to know. Yeah we figured we should put the miles on his car and save mine. He's at 192,000 and other than routine maintenance it's going so well.

I like the first one and the Rte. 66 better than the flags making the country. Kind of afraid that the first one will be too dark, even when I make it a watermark, for the writing to show up well above it.

Try a different color font....white could work.

Love the scrapbook idea, @dayvewc ! I like the state flags too. Don't have any helpful tips since I'm the least creative person ever, but I hope you share some of your pages when you get them done!

Drove to NC to see one of my horses and take a lesson today. I fixed myself some breakfast so I didn't stop and threw a tupperware bowl of salad in the car and ate that on the way home, so the only price was my gas. When I got home, DH said he wanted Chinese food for dinner but I told him I wasn't going back out again so he'd have to go out himself, knowing that he wouldn't want to after being home all day. Sure enough, we ate some delicious cheeseburgers and homemade fries :) Going to really try to hold off on eating out to show DH we can save some money. We're not AWFUL about eating out, but it seems like Saturday lunches are our downfall.

My kids don't get to do as many sports and clubs and lessons as many other kids do. No baseball/soccer/football, no gymnastics, no ballet and dance, no outside of school music lessons. I encourage them to do things that are offered through the school (sports, band, drama, etc) and occasionally pay for outside things (Upwards basketball and cheerleading for my two youngest) but even that can get expensive! Instruments, uniforms, club fees, etc... it all adds up when you have four kids!

That said, there are times where letting them have the experience is worth every penny! Your daughter will always remember that you got her THE dress! :)

Well, I now owe over $200 for taxes. Forgot about the $300 bonus my bank gave me last year for switching to them for my checking account. Yep, taxed on that too.

We had $500 to claim for the same reason. It only reduced our return by $25 overall though.

Honestly, sometimes it doesn't seem to make much sense why things go up and down so much. When I entered some other expenses, such as the $500 for consulting work, it took off over $200 for that. I thought that was insane, but who knows. I am just trusting TurboTax knows what they are doing.

I'm using TurboTax also. I can't imagine having a job doing people's taxes like my grandmother did for years - I would go absolutely bonkers.

Update. The test results came back and my B-hCG level went from 34 to 143. It more than quadrupled! That means that everything seems to be progressing well. I will keep everyone updated periodically as things continue on their way. Feeling very happy and excited now!

Yippee, that's great news

I purchased Turbo Tax for the first time this year. I spent the past three days gathering and organizing and reconciling receipts because I was sure 2016 was the year to itemize deductions. After entering the itemized deductions in every possible category, the standard deduction is still higher! What a PITA! Three days of my life I will never get back. DH still has to come up with the paltry interest figures on investments and then we can file.
Our refund is less than $900 - which is good or bad depending on your perspective.

party: Woohoo!! That's great news - congratulations!
