Debt Dumpers - 2015

Got my first cc statement from the high interest rate card I paid off. Turns out I overpaid by $50 so now I have a credit - woohoo! Apparently I paid before the interest was added for the month. Still waiting on my mortgage company to return my escrow funds so I've pushed back paying off a second cc until next week. I'm also going to try to pay off a third cc that has a lower balance. This will free up a lot of funds to throw at my remaining cc's. All in all, I'm hoping to be debt free by the end of 2016! Can't wait to put the extra money toward vacations and other fun stuff instead of bill paying! :yay:

Awesome news!

So I have a question for everyone...have you heard of the company "Payoff"? They advertise on Facebook, and I started reading about & watching their You Tube videos and they seem like a decent company. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I think it's a consolidation company of sorts. Just recently I finally switched $7k of our debt from one card to another, and incurred a 3% fee ($210) for doing so, but it's 0% for 15 months! I left just under $1,000 on the card that I transferred from, I'm making a $500 payment now, and the remaining $470 will be paid off next month. My question is...we will still have 2 other cards that need to be paid off, and I'm considering doing the "Payoff" thing. Can you take a look and tell me whether it sounds like a good deal or whether you have heard of them? Here's a story of one of their customer service people, I like that they seem to have been in the same boat as us and overcame!

I've never heard of that company. Maybe check with your bank and see if they have - a lot of times they can give you the recommendations of legit companies in your area

I am so sorry :(
Murphy must have come to me after you. We JUST picked up my husband's car ($550 of repairs) when I asked him to bring mine up to check out a noise. that noise just cost us $479. So, my out of debt plan by July is out the window. I hope you get a cheap fix!!
Oh that stinks! I hate spending $ on car repairs. I do try to look on the bright side in that it's still cheaper than having a car payment for 4-5 years!

I've never heard of them but honestly I'm so leery about any kind of outside help to pay off cc debt. There's just so many scams around. I don't know that anything could convince to go for it.

For our 2 big bills, dh & I each opened an individual Discover account and transferred the balances. I did his first and it was only for 12 months. Then around 1 month later I found one for 18 months to get in my name. Sure you pay a fee but usually it ends up being less than if you kept on paying interest.
Each of ours were around $7k. One was paid off 5 months before the 0% expired. The other will expire in March but should be paid off by late June or mid-July.
When I first did the transfers, I was really worried that we might not get them paid in time but I figured I'll just keep trying and that's all I can do, right? Well, it's amazing how once you start seeing progress, it's exciting to keep digging away and keep trying to throw every spare dollar at it.

What do they really do for you that you can't do yourself? Personally, I like to be in control on how/when I make payments. The video doesn't explain anything except that they were in debt and now they're not.

We once refinanced and took out equity to pay off cc debt but all it did was transfer the debt from one bank to another. It never taught my dumb azz a lesson about budgeting and spending less than what we earn. I find that paying it down "the hard way" has taught me so much more this time.

So I had the plumber come out today - wasn't too bad $179. Still not happy with Murphy though
It was weird where the leak was coming from - and luckily because I started taking things apart they found it was the condensate line backed up on the a/c unit. It's next to the washer - so I'm glad it's fixed. I never thought to take the panel down to look in there which had water sitting in there:headache:

Yea!! At least it's not too bad!

Oh that's much better than it could have been! Whew!

That happened to us when I was a kid living at home. We had no idea water was leaking behind the wall because it was in a walk-in closet that I shared with my sister and we had spare blankets, comforters & sleeping bags on a shelf so you couldn't see the wall at all behind all the stuff. When we pulled out some blankets and felt they were wet, we pulled them all down and saw the drywall had become all moldy. It was so gross! Who knows how long it had been happening?
Did the plumber say what causes that to happen?
I do remember when my brother installed our HVAC system he showed me where water should drain out for the AC and said to check it periodically to make sure we see water coming out. Honestly, it's something I don't even think about but I should start. :thumbsup2

Well, my mortgage company is finally mailing my escrow funds to me this week so I should have them next week. I'll have one more cc paid off after that plus will pay off a third of another balance. It does feel good to see those zero balances and like others have said it is addicting to get them paid off!

That is great!! It really is addicting to get them paid off once you start seeing 0 balances!

I'm on a roll!
Just paid off my big, fat Discover bill! :yay: :cool1: :cheer2::woohoo:

Only 2 more remaining cc's (out of 13 originally) which will both be paid off by 7/23 IF we don't have to get ds a car. Even if he does get a job I'd see what his hours will be before we rush out to buy him one. My car sits at the train station all day so maybe he can just ride there with me and use my car as needed. Why pay all that insurance and deal with repairs if he's leaving for college in September? Then it will just sit here collecting dust. I'd rather get rid of these bills. :thumbsup2

We received $100 in bonuses for dh & I to each open up a Discover Bank checking account. All I did was leave $25 in there for a few weeks. I was originally planning to leave it in there until 7/31 when bonuses were to be issued until I read in the fine print that the bonus will still post even with a $0 balance, as long as it's not overdrawn. So I tied up $50 for around 2 weeks, then took it back, and made $100. I received my bonus last week and dh got his today!
Easy peasy! :thumbsup2

BTW, I originally "discovered" this (lol) by email from Discover. The fine print did not say that one HAD to get an email to qualify for the offer. So once I opened my account I PM'd them to ask if dh would qualify. They said as long as he's never had a Discover checking account before then he would and I was provided this link. No perks in it for me, just the person who opens an account. You do have to be a Discover cardholder to qualify.

I hope everyone is doing well! My progress, sadly, is screeching to a halt. DS's dad has decided he wants to be a parent (12 years later) so I need to get an attorney to protect me and DS. I have a feeling he wants to alter the child support payment, which irritates me but really only makes our extras go away. I make enough to support us comfortably so if that makes him quiet I'll let it happen. I'm not going to let him do anything without consulting with an attorney first tho. I'm hoping to put one on retainer so I don't have to listen to him yell at me. He did all night so I just kept putting him to voicemail which makes him call DS and upsets DS. Ugh. He's a compulsive liar and I need to protect DS first and foremost. I also need to keep my mental capacity to be a mom. His father is mentally (and financially!) exhausting. I will also need to increase DS's therapy sessions which cost me $30 a session. So much drama! Why can't people just leave the drama at the door?

On a happy note, DS and I have spent an amazing 2 days together on a staycation! Not as fun as a week at Disney (def cheaper!) but I love spending time with him! We've got 3 more days together before I'm back to work.

Keep up the good work everyone! You guys keep me going!!!! I will get to return to my debt dumping soon but for now I will just save and save and save.

Family first...hang in there!

Stay strong. It sounds like you have your priorities in order. One step at a time and you will be back to debt dumping again in no time.
