This is our first time with the dining plan. Do you have the credits on a separate card from your room charges? How do you know you're only being charged from the ddp credits instead of charged back to your room?

With DDP, the server will first bring you a receipt showing the entire DDP bill, including tax & tip. (If you're one of those who want to know the prices of the meals, write down the total at this point because you won't see it again.)

They'll take your room key, run it, and return with a receipt which shows no prices and a total due of $.00. At the bottom of that receipt, you will see a notation of the number of TS credits remaining. I'm not positive of this, but I believe we got separate child and adult bills and receipts.

[ETA: For any non-DDP items (cocktails, for example), they will bring a separate bill. Since you are on DDP, that bill will INCLUDE the automatic 18% tip. You pay that bill with a credit card, or by room-charging, in the normal fashion.]

Because of the occasional reports of erroneous charging to rooms here on the DIS, we decline room-billing and just use credit cards for all our purchases. So I don't know how that differs from the above, but I'm sure someone will answer that for you.

We use our room key for both DDP and DDE purchases (alcohol, glow cubes, etc.). It is just as Jim describes. We do tell the server at the beginning of the meal that we will be using both.

So far we've had no problem using the room key for both.

Do you have any kids with you? If you're worrying about being charged to your credit card instead of the DDP...use one of your children's cards when the bill for the meal comes. We only had charging privileges attached to my card and my husband's card. They will bring you the bill first that tells you how much it would have cost if you were paying OOP. After you give them your room card you will get one bill for adults and one bill for children that shows $0 and at the bottom will tell you how many meal credits you have left.

Thank you. I was worried about food items being charged in error to our room.;)

You could also ask that any card not have charging privilege on it...adult or child. Then use that card for DDP and the other(s) for anything else.

But the more I think about it, the more I agree with my DH's stance. You should be able to use your room card for DDP as well as other charges without fear that the CMs will make an error. If a few CMs need better training or retraining, so be it. We shouldn't have to go through room key gyrations because of the errors of a few.

Of course, the onus is on guests to advise the CMs of our intent up front IMO.
