I've got to believe that there was a significant number of people leaving without leaving a gratuity. Some of our foreign brethren have different customs and might not have left anything and others of us are just cheap and may also have left nothing. Just read the comments on this thread and read between the lines. JMO.
Ding ding ding! We have a winner! If it was working the way the system was, one would assume that it wouldn't have changed. Having worked many years in the service industry I was amazed at the nicest people that I would have talked with in length about our resort town, where to go and what to do, and having bestowed upon me many compliments to my work, only to realize that I was left nothing to very little.
They will never see me again, and they don't
believe in tipping or tipping the standard 15%.
Servers are not slaves. They are not there to entertain and tickle your fancies. If they do, of course there could be extra cause for an extra tip. Yes tipping used be a bit extra for service well done. Quite frankly it's not that way anymore. Because the tipping thing got out of hand at some point in time, and it was well known that servers, although working hard could make a good deal of money, employers saw fit to capitalize on this and get away legally with paying servers less than half of the minimum wage, and rely on patrons to subsidize the servers with tips.
We may not like it and we would wish that employers would pay the fair wage the servers deserve and not put the burden on us. I get that. But we could say what tips should really mean till the cows come home, yet it doesn't change reality. And that is employers get away with slave labor for less than $3.00 an hour and let me tell you they are tough to work for, for what they pay. It's not fair, it's not even right in my opinion, but it is what it is.
We generally tip around 20% for decent service. We have gotten ridiculous for good service and have gone as low as 10% for poor service. 18% doesn't really bother me, because they are just jipping themselves as far as I see it.
I guess I understand why they feel the need to implement this practice. I dare say, many people are just cheap and are upset that they can't continue to get away jipping their servers.
