DIS Dads DDC XV - We put the "FUN" in dysfunctional! Christopher's thread...

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.

Christian was just kidding about waterboarding his wife. Please do not whip yours to convince her to go to Disney World.

Whip up something, not someone.

That being said.

The number one thousand. It is the first integer in the American English language to include the letter "A." The Proclaimers said that they would walk that many miles just to be the man who walks with you. It is also less than the number of days between my last WDW visit and my next (won't be till January of '14).

I never thought I'd stick with an online board long enough to post a thousand posts (even though, if you look at my stats, the majority...let's say about 75%...of them have been in the past two months or so).

I love having this place to go to, whether to rant, to rave, to waste time, to find others with the same mindset, to make fun of those with different mindsets. Basically, I love this community.

I can't finish this post without mentioning the person who pointed me to it, TurkeyLurkey, my older, and wiser (if I left that part out, I probably never would have heard the end of it), brother. I remember, when I was planning my honeymoon and was considering WDW, he showed me the Way of the DIS. It wasn't until after our honeymoon that I discovered the DISDads. I have learned more ways to cook bacon, to trick "friends" and/or family with Beverly, and overall, just enjoy life thanks to you guys.

Here's to a thousand more! :drinking1:drinking1 (Which, at my current rate, maybe be in less than three months:lmao:)

I think it would be very beneficial to her because she's kind of the nervous type when it comes to rides. Once she's on them, she enjoys them. It's just getting her to agree to go on.

My DD9 is exactly the same...That is why I play - "If we do ever go back..."

She doesn't like Soarin' - she says "It freaks her out".

My DS7 though - loves everything - the only thing he wouldn't go on last time was ToT - but this time - he will, I am quite confident about that. He loves Splash Mountain - we go down the big drop hands up and tongues out - it's our thing. ;)

Morning all!
Haha! My DD4 crawled into my bed this morning and started peppering me with questions about when we were going back too! She was trying to negotiate with me. I told her someday, she countered with 2 days, and back and forth we went for good 5 minutes... kids!

:rotfl2:

I meant to share this yesterday....

As most of you know, my next trip to WDW is in 67 days. And we are keeping it a secret from our girls and surprising them once we land at MCO and get on Magical Express.

Well, two nights ago, as I was putting DD4 to bed, my DD was asking where she was going in the morning. This is my daughter that has to always have a schedule and know what's going on when.

So I told her that she was going to her Grandma and Grandpa's house while we went to work. Then she says "And Tuesday and Thursday, I go to school"

"Yes, that's right"

"And Saturday is Baby Kate's Birthday party"

"Yes, that's right"

then she says...

"So, how many days until we go to Walt Disney World??"

:scared1:

so I responded....

"Um, who said we were going to Walt Disney World....we're not going, but we'll go someday again"

she says...

"Dad, I know we're going - you silly!"

:scared1:

Maybe it's all the hush hush talk my DW and I have been doing, the talking in code and abbreviations....maybe it's all of the disney characters she sees when I'm on the DIS at home...I don't know.

But now I don't know whether to keep on keeping her out of the loop and still try to surprise her or what!

Darn intuitive 4 year old Daughter!

Not sure we could ever keep a trip secret from the kids, but who knows, we succeeded in keeping last years Great Wolf Lodge trip under wraps till we pulled into the parking lot.

Had the computer on this morning as Audrey was getting ready to head out for daycare and saw my current background, the entrance to Adventureland from the hub. She asked "Why aren't we there now?" :lmao:

6 days. Next Monday is going to be tough for her (and me!) :rotfl2:
I bet! :lmao:

Also, I heard a rumor that Fed can defeat a brick wall at tennis.[/QUOTE]

Very nice 1K post! :thumbsup2 And it totally depends on whether or not the new DIS servers are installed to get another 1K in 3 months! :lmao::lmao:

Casey, congrat's on 1k.

Kung Hei Fat Choi.

Also, I heard a rumor that Fed can defeat a brick wall at tennis.
That's true. But then again, he plays tennis with hand grenades...

:thumbsup2 <--- I like this approach. I've been doing something similar with Squeaker lately. He's been talking for months now about wanting to go on a Disney Cruise. It's the combination of two things that intrigue him - Disney, and "a boat with a basement." We recently found out that we're going to be on a short Disney Fantasy preview cruise at the end of March. (I should probably create a ticker for that). So in the car on the way to/from preschool I'll have a conversations with him like, "IF we get to go on a Disney cruise, what kinds of things do you think you would want to do?" or "You know, IF we go on a Disney Cruise, they have something called a kid's club that's only for kids to play in - no parents allowed. Do you think you'd like to do that?"

So I get to prep him a bit for the experience, without him knowing exactly if or when we'll be going. We told The Bug about the cruise, but she's in on keeping the secret from Squeaker, who we'll tell when we head out to a hotel near the airport for the night before leaving for Orlando.

The Fantasy cruise sounds great! Being a Kansan, I'm sure you're already aware, but I'll post this PSA here for everyone else. If you're on a cruise and a tornado strikes, it's good be on a boat with a basement. :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 Congrats on 1000!
What's TurkeyLurkey going to do, fly over there and give you a wedgie if you didn't give him that shout out?

Well, he did have a mustache...
Mustaches have been allowed for years.
Part of the memo to Cast Members said "As with mustaches, all facial hair (beards, goatees, mustaches) must create an overall neat, polished and professional look and must be fully grown in, neatly groomed and well-maintained at no longer than a quarter of an inch in length."
I wonder how many CMs will be putting in for a month long vacation to fully grow in a beard?

Actually, he does have access to my bank account, so that he can help me pay my bills on time...

Any dads ever stay at Breakers Express when staying at Cedar Point? Having a hard time deciding what accommodations to use while staying in July. :confused3

Not everybody needs a whole month. Just sayin' :rolleyes1

Hummm… does she “know”, or is it more like “she knows you’re going, because you always go” (from her perspective that is).

Maybe the question to her is: “why do you say that?” Her answer may tell you that she has indeed deciphered your code, or it may be that she feels like that’s just what you do and it’s about time to do it again. Even if she has figured it out, she doesn’t have to know exactly when you’re going.

Max would ask us “when are we going back to Disney again” and I’d answer: “As soon as I have the extra funds to pull it off”. The fact that this event had already occurred and we were just waiting for the scheduled date didn’t enter the conversation, because he didn’t think to ask the question specifically enough or follow up on it.

As for the POV videos… make a game out of it. Say something like:

“Since we can’t go to Disney this week, why don’t we pick a new ride and watch the video of it. Then… when you’re bigger and we do get to go back… we will know what new rides to go see.”

It’s the “when your bigger” bit of that that can throw her off. It’s not exactly being dishonest, because she’s “getting bigger” every day, so the non specific timeframe makes for good obfuscation.

Wow Rob - you are a master of deception :wizard:

Good ideas though. I know she would be constantly asking me "Am I big enough yet to go on those Disney rides". Like everyday she'd ask me!!

:rotfl2:

But yes, I think you're right, I think she knows we're going because "we always go". The big difference is that her "disney experience" up till this year has always just been a single day trip to MK. So, even though we always go, she doesn't expect a full week at the World experience!

Oh no.... :scared1:

As a nemesis, I'd like to say I am behind this, but unfortunately I am not.

Our kids don't know about our August trip yet either. I won't be able to get away with keeping it from them until we arrive, as once we leave to the airport, or drive (not sure yet) they will clue in instantly.

But I know what you mean about the sneaking around. I see my wife trying to do it waaay to much. Almost to the point where the inconspicuousness of it makes it very suspect. i.e she tiptoes around saying "Let's go to the Disney Store" as she is worried they will figure out that we want to go there, to get new t-shirts for next 6 months in the future. I disagree with the overly secret methods. Why wouldn't we buy Disney t-shirts, even if we weren't going?

I tned to talk to my wife about it in front of the kids by saying things like "If we ever go back to WDW, where would you want to eat?"

I even ask the kids "If we ever go back to WDW, what rides would you want to go on? What things would you want to do?" then I tell them, I will make notes of that for when they are 25 and have a chance to return. :rotfl2:

Yeah it doesn't help that my wife and I are constantly throwing Disney in their faces....coffee cups, movies, the DIS on my Mac, my "Behind the scenes" disney DVD collection on my desk, the disney t-shirts being worn...etc..

My DD9 is exactly the same...That is why I play - "If we do ever go back..."

She doesn't like Soarin' - she says "It freaks her out".

I'll have to run this by the DW. I think I really would like to show her those POV movies of rides like Soarin' so she wouldn't be so tedious about going on them. But the other part of me doesn't want to ruin the surprise and newness of a ride/experience.

But since she's only going to be 40", it's pretty much Splash Mtn, Soarin' and Test Track (since BTMRR will be closed when we're there).

Don't forget Star Tours. Audrey missed it by less then an inch last time., Which was too bad, he loves Star Wars :sad2:

A good spy does not behave like a spy. :cool2:

Actually, It’s just that I’ve been dealing with my own youn’en for a good long while now.

This same answer process also works well with questions. A well-worded question will garner you answers to other questions that you now don’t need to ask (and the kid doesn’t really know what you we actually trying to learn).

Having everyone around you thinking that you’re a duffus also helps because they’re sure you aren’t as smart as they are. Of course… all teens are convinced of their own brilliance, so being seen as a duffus is not that difficult a task to accomplish. :rolleyes1

Oh yeah - I'm definitely going to try to do the Star Tours thing with her as well.

I dunno if I can break her out of her princess fascination though!
