He has some delayed articulation. The most noticeable is that when he says his name he says Toby instead of Colby. When people call him Toby he gets very angry then shuts down. He is at the point that when people ask his name he says that he doesn't know, ask my Mom. :sad2:

Poor kid! How frustrating that they didn't do the entire evaluation today. Joe had speech issues when he was 3 but they kept telling me that they were "age appropriate". But Joe knew he wasn't saying things right and wouldn't talk at school. That led to behavioral issues as it wasn't that he didn't have nothing to say. They evaluated him again and said he had "receptive" language problems-that he was overwhelmed by the environment but the solution was to give him speech therapy so I wasn't going to fight their diagnosis. He only had speech therapy from about October til Christmas 1 day a week at the public school and that was all he needed to get those few sounds he wasn't saying. He hasn't had any "receptive" problems since. He was the only one of my kids that used a pacifier and he had a foward thrusting tonge. It is hard to talk with you tonge sticking out of your mouth.

Emma had speech problems early on. All my friends thought I was crazy to get her speech therapy when she was 18 months but she really needed it. She qualified through early intervention so it was done at our house for about a year and then the therapist moved so we had to start taking her to someone's house.

There is a real shortage of speech therapists here but we were really lucky with the ones we got.

Hope the rest of the evaluation is done soon and Colby can start getting some help!:wizard:

Poor Colby. I hope you have good results with the therapist.

Thanks! DH hopes so, too!:rotfl2: It just boggles my mind that a nationwide chain has no policy in place about pricing.:headache:
It may turn out that they call and say we can have the display at the lower price, but we don't need 2 of the same thing and I would rather have one in a sealed box than one that everybody has played with in the store.
Don't they have a price match, that if another stores advertises something they will match the price?

Deb - Enjoy the DVD! Hopefully they will get Colby evaluated and get a plan together quickly!:wizard:

One of my charges had a private speech therapist who came to the house. He was another one who pushed his tongue out. She cut all of his straws really short and would make him only use his lips to drink. She also had him use a straw to blow cotton balls across the table. I can't remember his other exercises, but speech seems to be pretty fun for the kids.

Bob's daughter has what I would consider speech issues, but he says the ped. says they are age appropriate. It doesn't help matters that they let her have a pacifier at night until she was FIVE, and her mom still lets her have it. I have a hard time understanding her and at this point I would bet that her speech problems will last into adulthood.

Circuit City will price match, but the item has to be in stock at the competitor's store. Someone on the thread DH was reading said that even having the item in stock doesn't count, it has to be in a print ad. This wasn't advertised, somebody just happened to stumble across it in their local Best Buy.

It drives me NUTS to see preschool/early elementary age kids with pacifiers!:headache:
A former boss gave her DS formula in a baby bottle until he was 3. When I would try to give him breakfast he would pitch a raging fit, then he would force himself to vomit. Same kid had a pacifier that I told him was going in the trash when he turned 4. Right after his 4th birthday his mother told me I wasn't allowed to take the pacifier away. When I would throw one out she would go buy a new one. What infuriated me was that he was ready to let it go, but SHE wasn't. And they went to an idiot dentist who said pacifiers are fine until age 5!

Princess gave up her pacifier very easily. My first charge and DS gave theirs up easily, too. The other kids never had pacifiers to begin with. It is just a habit, they don't NEED pacifiers when they get to be 18 mos - 2 years.

The rule of thumb is that by the time a child is 2 a stranger should understand half of what they say. At 3 a stranger should understand 75%, and by age 4 a stranger should understand 100% of what the child says. Princess has very clear speech, but she is shy so she usually speaks too softly for strangers to hear her!

Hello, all!

I've been trying to read along somewhat, but I haven't been able to sit at the computer much. I am such a klutz that I fell last week while going to a college tour with ds. I landed really hard, I guess, because I did quite a number on my lower leg. It's basically just a giant bruise, but it's very swollen and painful.

Karen, I am so sorry about Shocker. I hope that you hear from your mother soon and that everything is fine.

Amy, CONGRATS on another pirate: ! I love the name Noah. We didn't tell anyone our name choice for Miles until after he was born and named. We did get some blank looks and a questions as to whether it was a "family name", but now it's just normal.

Denise, I am happy to see such good news about Rees! I hope they figure out what is going on with John and that they can get it fixed. I would like the weight-loss side effect, though.

Robyn, I need to go back and really read your trip report. I have loved the pictures!

I am blanking out on what else I've read. :wizard: and  to all that need it.

Beth

 for Colby! That must be frustrating for him. Miles is currently in speech because he doesn't have the r sound down right in some of the blends. He also needed work on a few sounds when he was in kindergarten.

Hi, Beth! I hope your leg feels better soon!! :wizard:

Thanks, Elizabeth! I'm definitely noticing improvement. I finally went to see a doctor about it today, because last night I was running a low-grade fever and there was new redness and heat in the leg. He thinks that I may have a minor infection and put me on antibiotics for that. He said that the rest will just take some time.

Luckily for me Nicholas gave up the pacifier easily at an early age. He threw it in the trash can himself. (Of course I retrieved, just in case my plan backfired). When he had it he was only allowed to have it at bed/nap time. I never let him walk around with it in his mouth. Alyssa never had an interest in one, so I was doubly lucky with her. Then I worried about her becoming a thumbsucker, but she didn't.

Hi Beth. I hope the antibiotics help.

Miles is home, so we have to get ready for gymnastics. This is the last week in the session...I'm not sure if we will do another session or not.

Janet (and all who were on the lookout for me)-I am doing not so great so I decided to take a little break from posting here. It has nothing to do with you all...it has to do with real life and would take to long to vent/tell/whatever you want to call it. ...

Theresa, I just wanted to send you a big dose of :grouphug: and :wizard: . I hope that things calm down for you soon. Until then, you'll be in my thoughts.

Hi all...Things have been pretty quiet here today. The brothers aren't here again as both are now sick. My after school girl is also been sick since Sunday. I can only hope that tomorrow is another quiet day. It's amazing how much I could get done chore wise and still have time to do fun stuff with Mo, Lucy and Jake. I wonder if I could only keep Jake and give up the other 2. If only they weren't all related:rolleyes:

Debbie- I am glad that your SIL is home but sorry to hear about Brandon. :wizard: for a fast recovery.

Karen- :wizard: for you as you wait to hear from you mom and more :wizard: for your mom.

Beth- I am sorry to hear that you hurt your leg. :wizard: that it heals quickly.

Amy- :wizard: for Julie. I hope that the bedrest is short and she can not worry so much.

Lindsay- I can't remember if I sent you some :wizard: for your furbaby so here's some :wizard:

Anne Marie- Glad the smash and bash went well.

Elizabeth- Sounds like you had an enjoyable day off. I hope that flash purchase works out.
