Very nice pics, everyone!!
Rant ahead, feel free to skip!
DH is annoying me.

DS has to choose ONE cluster to audition for at the Arts magnet. ONE. Obviously he should choose the one he has the best chance at being accepted into. That is Theater, NOT NOT NOT Music. Yet DH is on a tear to discourage DS from doing theater. WHY is this such a difficult concept for DH to grasp?
DS likes to drum, but he is NOT some drum prodigy who can beat out an entire district worth of kids to get a slot.
For Theater he has four years of classes under his belt at a leading theater (ranked one of the top 5 children's theaters in the country). He has been cast in a lead role in the school play. The drama teacher is an Arts magnet graduate, so she can help him with his audition. Another mom told me Theater has more slots than Music. CLEAR choice.
Obviously DH doesn't like Theater, so he wants to make sure DS doesn't like Theater. Then he turns around and says he knows the Arts magnet is a better fit for DS.

OK, BONEHEAD, then stop trying to sabotage my efforts to get DS to audition in Theater! The Arts magnet is one of the top 10 Arts schools in the nation. They aren't going to accept DS into the Music cluster, but he has a real shot at Theater. They have good test scores, a TON of scholarship opportunities, a total of 800 students compared to the 1100 that are at the middle school (not sure how many kids are at the high school), no sports which is fine because DS has no interest in sports.
DH keeps yammering about Band, and how he wants DS to go to all these extra district auditions. Those auditions are a direct conflict with the dress rehearsals for the play. Not an option. DS is overextended as it is with just REGULAR band crap. He is going to an All City Band audition on Monday, which we just got the details for. It is going to be a DEBACLE. They aren't starting until 5:45 PM. DH is usually in BED by 7:45 PM on Mondays. I am guessing they won't be home much before 10 PM. If DS makes it into the All City Band then he will have one Friday PM and one all day Saturday practice, followed by a concert that same Saturday. He will miss play rehearsal that Saturday, which will very likely hack off the drama teacher because it is VERY close to the play.

It will not hurt my feelings if he does NOT get into All City. DH wants him to audition for Region Band, too. The Band Director said Region is harder than All City and the dates also conflict with the play. We are NOT doing Region auditions. DH wants to send DS to Region auditions "To see how he stacks up against the other kids." What difference does THAT make? Music cluster auditons for the Arts magnet would put him up against kids on EVERY instrument. A lot of his friends take private lessons for their instruments, and as far as I know NONE of them are trying to get into the Arts magnet. It stands to reason that kids who ARE auditioning for the Music cluster probably also take private lessons, and they have probably been playing for more than 3 years.
IF the kids were allowed to audition for more than one cluster, fine. He could try Music and Theater. Heck, he could also try Visual Art if he felt like it! But since this is a ONE SHOT thing, he should focus his efforts where he actually has a chance.
OK. Rant over. Have a nice weekend!
