DDA chapter 21

It is a very sad day in our house. It turned out the Riley was much sicker than I thought and the Vet recommended that we put him down now. His eye was very infected and the tumor was putting a lot of pressure on it. He had actually scratched at it so much that part of the eye was gone :sad2: Hunter and Colby were with me so we spent some time with him then the boys left the room while she gave him the injection. I think the Vet cried as much as I did. She really became attached to him. While we were saying goodbye she went to her flower garden and picked us a big bouquet. We are having him cremated and will be able to pick up his remains after our vacation. The kids are upset, Hunter most of all since he considered Riley his cat. When we pick up the remains I will bring all of his extra food and fountains etc and donate them to other pet owners. We are done with pets in our home. It is just way too hard to say goodbye.

Deb -- I'm so very sorry for your loss. Even though you knew you would lose him soon, it must have really been a shock for today to be the day. I hope once you mourn some that you are all able to celebrate Riley's life and all the happiness that you brought each other.

Hi, everyone! I'm sorry to have dropped off the face of the earth for a while. My laptop finally gave up the ghost, and I had to wait for the arrival of our new iMac before I could get connected again. Then, while waiting for the computer to arrive, our family got hit with the swine flu! Yes, that's right! I was the first to fall on Monday, and Alan got it on Tuesday. Katie and Mary were diagnosed yesterday. So far, it looks like Jacob, Leslie and Timothy might be spared, but I'm not holding my breath. We are all holed up in our house for the next 7 to 10 days until the contagion period is over.

Let me tell you, it is an icky bug! It hit us all differently. I was flat on my back for 24 hours with chills, fever and joint pain in every joint from my toes to my neck. Luckily, we are on Tamiflu now, and it seems to be working quite well! It's not cheap, though, so I'm glad that we won't be able to get swine flu again!

I haven't read back too far (ok, only the last page), but I did see that Deb's family lost Riley. I'm so sorry, Deb! Losing a pet is so very hard! I felt the same way you do when we lost Cozy. I just didn't want to put myself or my kids through that.

I also saw that Tammi is now the sole owner of her house! Hooray for Tammi! I know how worried you've been about that! I hope this helps ease your mind and now you can breathe a little easier.

If there are any other big things that I missed in the last week or so, would someone let me know? I'd hate to miss anything important!

I haven't forgotten that I stopped my TR after Day 2. I promise another installment tonight. I've got it all typed up, and so it shouldn't take too long. Just wanted to pop in to say that I've missed y'all and am sending you my love!

Day 3:

Sunday morning dawned grey and drizzly! It was not looking like a good beach day, but Alan promised me that it would burn off soon, and the kids would have a great time at the beach. We packed up the hotel room, loaded up the van and we were off. Unfortunately, this really nice hotel didn’t have a continental breakfast, so we decided to just munch on granola bars and find something to eat closer to the beach where we were going to meet my brother and his family.

We contacted them by phone, and they were already at the Crystal Cove State Park just waiting for us. It took us about another 20 minutes to meet up with them, and then we began the trek down to the beach. We took the baby in the stroller, our beach bag, chairs and kids down a long narrow flight of stairs to the beach below. I’m sure we were a sight! This beach is known for the tidal pools that are created when the tide is out, and the kids had a ball exploring them! It was kind of chilly, but not too bad. My kids stripped to the bathing suits and they were off! They found crabs, sea slugs, anemones, and starfish. They had a marvelous time digging up shells in the sand, and exploring. Alan and my brother, Addison, were great with them. They kept an eye on the little ones, so that my SIL, Dana and I could watch the babies on the beach. Timothy was fabulous! He was content to sit in his stroller and watch the waves. Dana’s baby, Chris, dug in the sand, and brought us shells to see.

We weren’t expecting to hear from my Dad who was traveling with my sister and her family, for several more hours. Imagine our surprise when they called at 11:30 to let us know that they were in Orange County and looking for us. At that point, we decided to pack up our spot in the State Park (since the kids couldn’t take any of those shells as souvenirs) and find a nice sandy beach where the kids could play in the waves. We arranged to meet up with my Dad and his crew at a beach a few miles up the Pacific Coast Highway.

On our way, we stopped at a grocery store, and picked up some more sandwich stuff. While we were waiting, we made lunch for our hungry crew! As we were finishing, up drove my sister’s family in their van. They ate some lunch, and then we found parking spots on the street so we could walk to the beach. It was only about 2 blocks away.

Once on the beach, we set up chairs for Dad, me and some of the others. The kids all ran for the water! It was darling to watch them jump in the waves, and get braver and braver! While the younger ones were in the water, Alan took Katie and our niece, Marina, to a small pier close by, and they discovered starfishes that they could actually pick up. They were thrilled. Alan gave his cell phone to my BIL to keep it dry and he waded in the water to get enough starfish for everyone who wanted one.

After about 2 hours on the beach, we were all ready to go. The sun still had not shown it’s face, and we were getting chilly. The poor kids had blue lips and were shivering! We packed up and started to the vans. BIL decided to get a couple more starfish for his kids, so we left them on the beach and told them we’d meet them at the vans. It wasn’t until our kids were all loaded up that we remembered that BIL had Alan’s phone. We crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. Not much we could do about it by then! Unfortunately, BIL had forgotten he had the phone, and it took quite a dunking in the ocean. Totally dead! At least we still had my phone.

At this point, we formed a caravan to get to our hotel. We were staying at the Park Vue Inn. It’s the same place we’ve been staying for the last 14 years that we’ve been going to Disneyland. It’s directly across the street from the main gate, and is technically the closest hotel to the parks. We like it, as it’s clean, and there’s a continental breakfast. Nothing fancy, but enough to hold us.

When we got there, we got checked in and met up with my other brother and his wife. They had flown in from New York State with her parents for the trip. It was great to see them again! Once we were all checked in, we literally threw our kids into the pool to get the sand from the beach off. Well, Alan stayed with them, while I unpacked in our room. As I unpacked, I realized that I had forgotten to pack Timothy’s sun hat! I was so mad at myself! Alan offered to take me to the store to pick one up. We decided to go to the character warehouse store in Fullerton. Dad and Marina went with us. We found hats to go around, light up toys for the kids for 1.99, and a stuffed animal (Pip from Enchanted) for Katie. It was a productive trip for us!

When we got back, the kids, who had been swimming with cousins, were ready to eat dinner. We got everyone out, showered and dressed and loaded up the van to go eat. We decided to go to a Chinese place that Alan and I found several years ago. Yummy food, huge portions, and quite reasonably priced. We ordered 2 plates with 3 selections on each and split them between us. There were 6 of us eating, and we still had food left over. A good deal, all around.

Once we got back to the hotel, we got the kids in their pajamas and went to the breakfast patio to watch the fireworks over Disneyland. This was to be the last showing of the fireworks, as a new show was opening on June 12. There were no other fireworks scheduled for our trip. We met up with the rest of our extended family, and had quite a fun time watching the show! We could faintly hear the music, and it was just lovely. Once it was over, we all hit the beds, and were asleep very quickly. The busy day had certainly taken it’s toll on us!

Glynis I hope you are all feeling better soon :wizard:

Glynis I am so sorry that you all got the swine flu :headache: That cannot be any fun at all, especially at the start of the summer. Im sure the kinds are going stir crazy. Hopefully Timothy and the others will be sparred.

Elizabeth,
We all knew you would keep Zazu!!! :goodvibes He was never "The Kitty Who Is Leaving Soon".;)
So true! I was just waiting for the "official annoucement" that you were keeping him!

Thanks, Deb. It has been an interesting few days, that's for sure! So far, no one has hurt anyone else, but I think we're all ready for some alone time! Unfortunately, that will have to wait until Tuesday at the earliest! Now, if Jacob, Leslie or Timothy starts showing symptoms, that date will be pushed back even further!

Do we have to wake them up?

Glynis - that beach looks cold! Fun, but cold!

Deb - I am so sorry that you have lost Riley.

Glynis - I am so sorry you all had to deal with the flu! Loved the update on your TR, though! :)

I hope you are all doing well.

I think I need to build an ark. As it continued to rain on and off today. I had a organization celebration to attend. It was outside under a tent that was surrounded by mud. It would have been nice to know it was going to be outside. I would have dressed more appropriately for the weather. I know have uber muddy pants and shoes. At least I had a sweater with me or I would have been cold.

After that I attended the viewing of a volunteer's daughter. I did not know the person or the family. It was just a duty as assigned.

Tomorrow I have to pick up camping supplies off a front porch before I head to the office to return them.

Deb I am just now checking the board and I read about Riley.

I am so very sorry. Many hugs to you and your family.:hug::grouphug::grouphug:

They are both waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. If you've never heard of it, read this: http://rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm

Read it with a tissue close by.

Oh my, no matter how long it has been since any of us has lost a furry friend, this really hits home. I cannot stop crying thinking about the recent losses and long ago ones in our DDA family of our furry friends.

Glynis, I sure hope you and your family are up and running again soon. !!!! :goodvibes
