My youngest DD has ALWAYS complained about many things 'hurting'. Very much a drama queen in the aches and pains department. :crazy2: I have told her that if she complains so much, one day she is going to be really hurting and I just won't believe her anymore. :worried: The other night, she was out with a friend of hers. They were running around and she said she felt her knee "pop" and she fell to the ground. She came home limping and with an ice pack. I just figured she banged it and she would be fine. Her knee was still hurting yesterday and my other daughter was talking to a friend of hers, who plays soccer, and they exact thing happened to her. She told my daughter what it was and that she needed to wear a brace on her knee for 3 months!! I tried calling the doctor after school yesterday but they were closed already. Since I had to go to Walgreens anyway, I picked up a knee brace until I could reach her doctor on Monday.

Does anyone think this is something serious or have experience with a "popping" knee?? It's not swollen or red...it just hurts if she tries to bend it or if she walks.

Kids!! It's no wonder I'm getting gray!! :scared:

A knee is one joint you don't want to mess with. It takes tremendous stress during the course of a person's life. Injuries to knees can haunt a person for the rest of their life. I would definately have it looked at.

With my dd, I would keep an eye on it. Then call her down for a surprise. If she comes running then I know it is not that bad.

In fact my 14yodd just showed me the bruises on her knee complaining. Now she is taking the dogs for a walk...can't be that bad. :confused3

I would call the doctor definetely on Monday morning.

My DD11 complained for months on & off sporadically about her shoulder hurting (she's a competitive swimmer - swims 5 -6 days a week for 90 min. a day).

Well beginning this December her shoulder started hurting each time she swam. We stopped the swimming until the doctor could see her. Well...now it turns out she's in physical therapy twice a week & can only swim 30 min. a day.

The doctor said if we'd been in to see her sooner...things wouldn't have gotten this far.

get it looked at ASAP. I grew up figure skating, I can't tell you how many pops, torn fibers, ligaments and muscles, dislocated knees I had. Get it checked out, so they can work on in it, she might get a brace, some are more comfortable than others, she might need physical therapy, it doesn't sound serious enough to need a surgery, but you never know.

Let us know how it goes.

I would get it looked at too, Colleen, you never know. My best for Jessie.

Not to try to scare you, but a POP sound can mean torn ligaments. I tore my ACL 14 years ago skiing and heard a POP. The knee is unstable, but you can still walk on it. I would get it checked out ASAP.

I have a friend (adult) who was pitching a softball with her daughter, heard her knee pop, and hit the ground. She ignored it for a while and then went to have it checked, the ACL was torn. On December 28th she had surgery. I understand what you are saying about your DD. I have one of those, too. She is pretty clumsy (although she is a competitive clogger??) and often has joint/ligament issues. Never know what to believe, though. Still, if she continues to complain, I would have it checked.

I had a painful pop as a teen in my knee. Last October--the subsequent resulting aches and pains from said pop was discovered to be a meniscus tear. It is easily remedied (via arthroscopic surgery). Difference is night and day.

Have her checked out--it will show up on an MRI if that is what it is.

When removed/repaired--the knee can function beautifully for many years. When ignored--compensation happens and further injury can result. My tear became complex in August from another activity. We can only speculate that it was minor before b/c I could function after the initial injury.

Take her to an orthopedist!

My mom thought I was crazy when I first complained about it many years ago. Often no swelling accompanies the injury. So I seemd to be trying to fix "nothing".

I trained for a marathon last year and was training and running just fine this year when I was diagnosed. I could have ran the entire full marathon just fine (but with pain), but opted to run pain-free when the surgeon offered to get it taken care of pronto.

Ability to do run really means nothing.

The body is resiliant and though one activity may be painful, others may not. It doesn't mean a problem doesn't exist.

ETA: FTR, I hope I don't come across as a hypochondraic. :hyper:

I just got written off for my parents several times for actual injuries that should have been tended to at the time. I actually didn't think anything was wrong with my knee and thought it was overuse aches and pains. But I had that 2nd pop in August and by October my knee decided it would start swelling. Took about 3 months to do that. So just cautioning you that just b/c it doesn't "look" injured, or that some activities can be done without complaint, better to have it checked and let the doc tell you.

Have it checked out.

Did it sound like the BONE popped? or something else?

You would rather have it checked out and it be nothing, than not, and it be something.

What I would be concerned about is that your daughter, who I assume wouldn't know about such things, described hearing a "pop," which is exactly what would describe the sound the knee makes when something goes awry. I'd get it checked to be safe, knees can be tricky. Don't feel too bad about not getting checked right away. I once let my daughter walk around for 2 days with a sore ankle that turned out to be a hairline fracture. We get used to the dramatics of girls and it's sort of like the boy who cried wolf, no? Good luck and hope all turns out okay.

Well, I took Jess to the pedetrician first thing this morning...now I am waiting to hear back from the orthopedic to get her in for an appointment with them. I hope I can get her in today so I know what we are talking about and where we go from here. She is still wearing the knee brace I bought her and her knee still hurts and feels like it's going to give out if she walks on it. Specifically, it hurts in the side of the knee...inside, I guess you'd say. Looking at a diagram of the knee, that is where the ACL is. Here's hoping she in there sooner rather than later! :worried:

Best of luck to your daughter, Colleen. Let us know what you find out.

Melanie

I hope it isn't her ACL. Sending Pixie Dust your way.

Ohh, I have poppy knee too! My last incident was while I was on the trampoline with my son and we both came down at the same time. :faint: Uhg, I get the heeby jeebies just thinking about it.
I hope there's nothing seriously wrong with your daughter. :flower3:

I dislocated my knee-cap at age 16 - and it wasnt red, or swollen - and it was one heckuva *POP* too. OMG! I still remember that - ZOWIE!! :scared1: Ouch!

I had to wear a "terminator style" brace for a long while.... I think like 6 weeks?

So, it's possible. And mine happened cuz I was getting out of my car and a bee :scared: flew in my face and I just jumped back funny. Go figure... :confused3

I am taking Jessica to the orthopedic doctor out of St. Christopher's for Children tomorrow morning at 10 am. It still hurts and she still can't use it without it starting to give out so I can only imagine that SOMETHING'S up. Her middle school did give her an elevator key to use so at least we don't have to worry about the stairs.

I'll give you an update when we get back tomorrow. Thanks for asking!! :flower:
