How long does it take for them to get their strength back? We are going to WDW in June and I want to make sure that she is strong enough. She is sooo skinny and weak I am thinking that maybe I am going to need a stroller.

Hi anabelle,
I am so sorry to hear your DD is sick.
I had mono last year and I was pretty much weak for a good month.

My friend had to be admitted to the hospital for a week when she was in college.

and there was someone at the office that I knew had it and she was just walking around normally. Only a little weak.

All I'm trying to say is unfortunately it's different between person to person. I would say a stroller is a good bet.
Unfortunately the only good thing for mono is rest rest rest...

Please give her a hug for me ... I know how miserable she must be feeling...

Sending some pixie dust across the state... :)

My DS had mono when he was 4 1/2. God knows how he got it. He was treated with a steroid which helped tremendously. Within two weeks he was back to jumping off the walls.

Good luck and God Bless.

Have a wonderful trip.

Was the steroid for the swollen glands?

I would try not to worry. (I know that's hard to do when it's your kids, though.) Mono is supposed to be generally easier on kids than adults. They tend to bounce back sooner. And you have almost 3 months.

I had mono in high school. It did take me a while to get all of my strength back, but I think that I was back to normal after about 2 months or so.

Honestly I don't remember exactly what the steroid was for (he is 8 now). He did look like a football player with his swollen glands so it could have been for that. He also had some white gook coming out of throat, so maybe that is what it was for. The steroid gave him a LOT of energy. It was like magic and it was an extremely small dose that he was weaned off of within two weeks.

Best Wishes.

Just asked DH and he thinks the steroid might have been for the enlarged tonsils.

A friend of mine's DD7 just had mono. They found out it late Jan I think and they went on a trip to WDW in late Feb. She did great. As was said, everyone is different, but I thik you have time! Good luck! :sunny:

Thanks everyone. She seems to being doing better. She has got her voice back and is becoming her bossy self again. I am going to plan lots of breaks and take the stroller just in case. We will be staying at BCV so we can go back to the room if she needs to rest.

My DS7 isn't sick & I plan on bringing the stroller. I dont care if he's a little tall or over the weight limit. There is now way he can do the amt of walking we do in a day(especially without ALOT of complaining)

Sorry she's so sick. How do children get mono anyway? I always thought it was a teens and adult sickness? I hope she'll recover quickly, you've got plenty of time before you're trip.

My DH has been battling pneumonia for almost a month now and we leave in about 3 weeks, I know the anxiety you must feel about it.

I really have no idea how she got it. I haven't heard of anyone at school getting it. The only really non-school place we go to is the bowling alley. You never know with viruses...

My son had mono two years ago at the age of 7 also. It was pretty tough because he stopped eating. He also had strep ( common with mono I guess). He lost several pounds! His energy level increased when he started eating again. As a result I stopped allowing him to drink from the water fountain at school.( for his protection and others) I have never let my kids drink from the fountains since. Not that it was the problem but I work in a school and people put their mouths all over those things. They take water bottles from home. We NEVER drink from other water fountains. :goodvibes

If your DD stops eating/drinking call the dr and tell him/her. A 7 year old losing a few pounds is not a good thing. You also want to make sure she drinks plenty of fluids.

:grouphug: I know how sick you little one feels. I would rather I be sick than see a sick child.

I got Mono from a drinking fountain when I was 16. I also had the usual strep throat. I was out of school for 2 months. This was due to the fact I didnt know I was sick until I couldnt swallow. I never even had a sore throat. I still have my tonsils and they didnt even swell up until I was on the meds for 1 week. I lost 35 lbs in the 7 weeks the Dr was more concerned about the lost weight as it slowed my recovery. I was also weak from the fact I couldnt eat. When I started to eat again, I regained my strength within about a week.

Sorry your DD is sick. I myself had mono two years ago. I was 28 at the time I was diagnosed and was out of work for well over 2 months. I lost tons of weight (too bad I couldn't keep it all off) and for the first couple weeks couldn't even get out of bed and make it down the hall on my own. Took me near forever just to get back to half my speed. Still not quite 100% and will probably never be. But thats becuase I was so old when I got it.

From what I was told during my near daily doctor visits was that children tend to recover from mono much quicker than adults/teens do. The older the patient, the more time it typically takes to recover. Also that more children get mono than actually get diagnosed for it.

Although mono is generally thought of something that teens get and sometimes refered to the "kissing disease", you can get it from lots of things. Sharing drinks, drinking fountains, dirty silverware etc. While I was sick I had my own designated dishes and even the bathroom was just for my use. All to make sure the others I live with wouldn't get sick as well. Its a communicable disease and any spending time with other people in close areas (sports teams, camps, schools) can get it. And if one person gets it, others are bound to as well.

Just make sure your DD gets plenty of rest now. If your trip isn't till June Im sure she will be fine by then. Make it a point though to work in some resting times. She may not want them, but it would be wise to take them. And it wouldn't hurt taking a stroller. Even a small umbrella one. Maybe try without it and see how she does, and it she doesn't need it cool, but if she does, you have it with you. Nothing wrong with being prepared.

Hope your DD has a quick recovery. Good luck.

About a month ago my DS 7 was falling asleep in class. It happened 2 times in 2 weeks , so I took him to the doctor, they did some blood tests and they came back that he was in the recovery stage of mono!! I couldn't believe it! He must of gotten from school because no one else in the family was sick, but I never realized that a child could get mono before this. He is fine now, if it wasn't for the blood test I wouldn't have even known, he was ok otherwise.

I'm actually taking my dd8 to the dr. tomorrow to be tested for mono, among other things. She's been sick very frequently for the last 2 mos. She has good days now and then, but she hasn't been consistently well during that period. She's lost about 9 pounds due to lack of appetite (not TOO big of a deal as she's already had her pre-puberty wt. gain, but still not normal for this age). I don't get to be with her much since she's in school all day and I work 2nd shift. Well, this past week she was home on spring break, and I thought, OMG, this kid it SICK! How did I miss this?! I'm a nurse and it took this long for me to figure this out?! Well, she had the flu the 1st wk of Feb, then strep the next week, was ok for about 4 days, then strep again, then another virus. I think there's something more going on here. And we leave in a WEEK! If I have to cancel, I need to do it ASAP. I'll probably just end up pushing her around in a stroller or wheelchair. I figure if it is mono, it's surely well past the contagious stage anyway. Hopefully we'll get some answers from the blood work tomorrow. BTW, mono is spread by saliva, so besides kissing, drinking fountains, sharing silverware or drinks, you can also get it when someone coughs and doesn't cover their mouth. They spew saliva all over, then you touch something with their germs, then you put a piece of gum in your mouth or something. Also, tons of kids in her class have been very sick also, and I'm wondering if any of them have been tested, or if the Dr. is treating them as if each incidence is unrelated as well.

SSkem-
Good luck with your daughter's tests. My DD is getting much better. The rest did her a lot of good. It was a blessing that she only had to miss one week of school. This week we are Easter break. We even took a little walk outside in the fresh air last night.
