We are doing this cruise! It sounds awesome. It will be our third Disney cruise. After the cruise we are flying to California for a week at Disneyland. I'm doing the Disneyland Half Marathon. So fun!

Accompanying me will be my husband and our 6 children! :)

Hi and :welcome:
So glad you are going us!!:goodvibes I will be traveling with my husband and 5 kids. What are the ages of your kids? My kids will be the ages DD(13) DS(8) DD(7) DS(4) and DS (1). Where are you from? We are from SW Wisconsin.

I have been reading a little bit on cruise critic about lenses and a lot of people are recommending telephoto lenses for Alaska with a min 200mm zoom. I own a 25-135 but I don't know if it will be enough. The have some nice zoom lenses on borrowlenses!:confused3

I might have to lean on some of you guys for some camera advice. We got a Canon Rebel T1i a few months ago when Lionel got a bonus, mostly to get some nice pics of the baby as she grows up. I'd love to get him a really nice lens for his birthday or Father's Day. If anyone knows of a decent digital telephoto that is somewhat reasonable......let me know!

I've been looking at expeditions and I have to say, having a 1 year old really changes how you view them lol. I think we're doing one of the whale watching ones (on the BIGGEST boat) but otherwise I have no idea.

Also just found out that one of the couples we were going with had to bail, her husband is getting deployed in June right before her birthday :sad2: FEH!

My DH ( Blue Marlin) just notified me that:

Pan Pacific is running a 3 day sale.
He switched pour reservation to a Premium Ocean view( 500Sq ft ). It was cheaper than our other reservation.

It does need to be paid in full at time of booking.

ETA: Official price was $218

You made a great camera choice! I am not sure you can put telephoto and reasonable in the same sentence. My lens was around $700 and that's not good enough:rotfl: Kim and I both rent lenses from borrowlenses.com. You can get a $1500 lens for like $100 for the week! Not to discourage buying one...I can help if you want some reccomendations. I personally like renting because i can use different very expensive lenses all of which I wouldn't be able to own.

I am thinking of renting two for this cruise. One wide angle and one telephoto. Plus don't forget filters. Kim and I are still getting to the bottom of which to use lol! Photographing Alaska can be a bit different than other places because of all the glacial ice (which is white, blue and creates glare)and wildlife (movement).

Welcome!

I will check that out - thanks for the tip!

This is StSomewhere's DH. I couldn't stay away once the camera talk came out. Just got a nex-3 and a pentax coupler so all my old lenses work. Can get up to 400mm based on 35mm. So the math is 1.5, if memory serves me, but what if you have a 1.5inch coupler between the lens and cmos, is there another factor?
Also am I better off doing the Vancouver lens deal vs. Trying to transport?

I am not sure...I never stacked lenses personally. There is a good post about this over on the nikon forums. (Shhh don't tell Canon on me).

Also are the deals better in vancouver on lenses? I am transporting mine. I have a really nice bag that Dh uses as his carry on. We put the body, 2 lenses and dh's camcorder. The only thing that would hold me back from buying in CA is if I knew i really wanted a specific lens. What if I couldn't find it?

I like to hit the ground with my equipment lol:rotfl:

PS that looks like a nice camera, tell us how you like the sony!

Hi all! I have not been on in a while. Too much going on. I am going to try and get caught up on the posts. It will be here before we know it.

Thanks for the info. I also did a bit of research on lens extenders, which is basically what I have for the Pentax lens on the Sony body, and found the formula TotExtension / Focal Length = TotMagnification.

Doing some reverse figuring, I come up with a conversion that the 200mm lens will act like a 450mm lens based on the crop factor and extension. To convert that to Point and Shoot Zoom, I come up with a 26x zoom. I think that should do it.

Also looked at the lens rental companies in Vancouver, and they do not rent Sony E-Mount lenses, so I have to bring my own now.

I did see though that Sony announced seven new lenses for 2011 and 2012. Crossing my fingers.

Good morning all.

We are getting closer, when I went to the dentist this week and they made my next appointment in August!!!!

We spent hours looking at excursions last night. I think we have made up our minds for now!!! In Skagway the white train and bike tour. Ketchikan the lumberjack show and in Jeneau whale watching.

Since there are no excursions in Tracy Arm I assume we don't get off the ship? Do we just cruise around the area?

We have not made any hotel reservations yet. My dh is waiting on talking to his sister who has friends in Vancouver.

Not much going on here. It has been cold ans rainy here in sunny florida. I am working on a photo album for my mother's 90th birthday.

have a great day all!!

We don't get off the boat in Tracy Arm. It is a nice slow cruise down a fjord. Beautiful scenery, waterfalls, and a glacier at the end. It'll be very cold - so mitts are a good idea if you want to be outside for awhile watching.

I live in Victoria and visit Vancouver a fair bit as we have family living there. It you have any questions, just ask.

Blue Marlin bought me a new camera for our trip!!! ( which I will be taking on the TA)

It is a Sony waterproof, freezeproof, shockproof.
It is about the size of a deck of cards.

It will be perfect in the Alaska weather. If it is raining, he won't want to use all his lens. We will use mine.

When is your trip? I need a new camera, on my old one the little orange clip that holds the battery is gone. I have awaterproof one, but I think for Alaska I really need a new one!!

ok, if you insist:rotfl:

We are flying in on Saturday. Is it easy to get around without a car? The hotels and excursions are so expensive we would really like not to have to rent a car.

Do you know anything about the Coal Harbor hotel? They seem to have decent rates.

Thanks for all your help.

Very easy to get around without a car. Things are fairly close in downtown Vancouver and the parking costs are extremely high. Most likely cheaper in the long run to take a taxi if you needed one - instead of car rental and parking fees. I think there is something similar to a hop on/hop off bus. I'll have a look for a brochure the next time I'm on the ferry - in a few weeks and see what I can find out about that.

Sorry, don't know much about hotels as we stay with family. Maybe check the rating / reviews on trip advisor.

I am going on the Eastbound Transatlantic in May on DCL:cool1:

I wanted a small camera that can fit in my pocket. We ordered the Sony Cyber- shot TX 5 ( that is the waterproof model). It has a touch screen and a lot of nice features.

Our other small camera has been dropped many times and the battery case cover is taped close.
