Does anyone have experience with having their non-verbal kids in the DCL clubs (for the youngest ages)? Our youngest is currently not speaking due to hearing and cleft palate issues. We don't know how well (or if) he'll be speaking by the time we cruise this Fall, hopefully, but we're not sure. Will he be able to go to the Oceaneer Club? He can communicate basic needs (bathroom, desire to eat and drink, desire to leave, etc).

Thanks.

bumping up...........
anyone with an answer?

DCL tries to accommodate each child regardless of a disability as long as they can participate without requiring 1:1 or special care ( meaning they don't do tube feeding or administer meds, etc). The counselors are well trained and have experience with this type of situation. I've seen them using signs or communication boards brought by the parents. They do have scheduled potty times where everyone must go- little ones often get involved in the activities and forget, hence they go as a group every so often- this is a good thing for all the children. If your child has a nonverbal way that he communicates then by all means explain that to the counselors when you get there, bring a communication board or picture cards he can use to indicate a need, etc. You would also want to fill out the medical information form available online or by fax ( or you can call and have it mailed to you or your t/a if you have one) to indicate your son's special needs- this way they'll have a "heads up" to know that he might need an alternative way to communicate vs. speech or that he may not be able to communicate clearly. I don't think you'll have any problems onboard.---Kathy

My son has a communication disorder. Based on your description, I think your son will be fine in the kids clubs. They do have experience working with different types of kids.

Just be aware that they are quick to call parents whenever the child requests. Let them know if you'll be someplace like Palo...they will work a bit harder to keep your child happy and occupied until you are are done.
