hi everyone!

i'm on day 3 of atkins...it's not easy at all for me!!! but i'm trying. both DH and i have that funny metallic taste in our mouths now. i've already had an entire bottle of water this morning trying to get rid of it and it's not working. there's a little part of my brain that keeps telling me that a tiny piece of chocolate wouldn't hurt anything...and then the other part kicks in and says NO!!!!! i'm done with eggs. it took everything i had to swallow my eggs this morning. does anyone have any suggestions for other breakfast items i might try?

i keep smelling the bagels that everyone is toasting and it's getting really hard to stay away...i need to find something that i can bring with me to work and snack on that won't hurt...is there anything like a snack type mix that i can have? i know we need to avoid breads and flour and stuff like that...but i'm going to go insane...

I'm glad you checked in! I was wondering about our group of newbie Atkins people!

The metallic taste will go away - either that, or you'll get used to it! And yes, the first few days are tough. BUT you are almost to the point of feeling really good and energetic and proud of yourself - hang in there a little bit longer.

EGGS! I think almost everybody gets sick of eggs. AND what everybody here will tell you (let me be the first!) is to stop thinking "breakfast food" vs "non-breakfast food"

I like leftover steak for breakfast! My favorite "breakfast" is not strictly speaking allowed during Induction - but next time I need to go on it again like after a vacation of something I would definitely include it during Induction - and that is Macadamia nuts. I eat 1 oz only - that's 200 calories - but it is high fat- 21gms (very important on induction); high fiber - 3gm (did anyone mention staying regular?) ;1 gm additional carb and 2 gms protein. Anyway - mac nuts are MY secret weapons. BUT you must control how much of them you eat! I would not do any other nut on Induction - just like the rules say. Remember - this is only what I would do - not a recommendation to start bending rules.

Good luck - and keep checking in!

my sister just got back from hawaii and she brought me a can of macadamia nuts!!! of course, i can't have the chocolate covered ones though...;)

is it normal for the metallic taste to make you feel slightly nauseated?

Induction is just really hard in the first few days for some people. I had already worked my way down to low carb before I started - so I can't really help you much there! I think you're just going through carb withdrawal with all its symptoms. Don't get hungry - eat if you need to! All these symptoms should pass in the next day or two. OK?

You can do it! Keep posting any qiestions.

thanks so much for all of the support!! this is a lot harder than i thought it would be...but i'll make it!

i just can't bear to eat that salad that i brought with me to work today though. i'm having one of the gals i work with bring me back a burger, no bun! i need meat...lol! i've also printed the low carb recipe thread and have some great ideas...i want to try the mock danish...maybe that will help me with the sweets cravings and i can have it for breakfast!! and i do intend to try some other foods in place of the traditional breakfast foods too. that's a brilliant suggestion!! those of you who have tried the turnip fries, are they good? i've never been a turnip fan, but i love my french fries and if i can find an alternate to hold me over, then i'll be much happier!!

thanks again guys!!

Just hold in there. I am starting week 8 and loving it.

Some thoughts:

Don't worry about eggs. Try some other things. I bought the pre-cooked bacon from Sam's Club. Very reasonably priced, tastes great. One week I brought canadian bacon for breakfast, this week, precooked sausage. I love breakfast meat and I had very quickly gotten tired of boiled eggs. I usually eat at work because I don't have time in the a.m. to fix breakfast before I leave home.

The metallic taste may never leave. I still have it. Some one said it is the taste of losing weight (ketosis). I have found the Fruit2O Water from Sam's helps a lot because it is flavored. I just drank a bottle of Grape and the taste is gone (for now).

One of my favorite lunches is taco salad. I don't eat the chips (or shell). So, it is just meat, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, and a little salsa. (This would be good when induction is done). I also make a lot of tuna salad or chicken salad and eat it right out of tupperware. I really don't miss the bread, but it gives you protein. A chicken caesar salad is a good idea too.

One of my favorite snacks at work is the Baby-bel (bonbel) cheese. They are individually wrapped in 3/4 ounce wheels. I take little bites to make it last and it is very satisfying (if you like cheese). [Also purchased at Sam's]. {I must shop a lot at Sam's.}

Another favorite snack (post induction) is sunflower seeds. I bought the box of individual packets. Each packet has only 2 carbs. By the time I break each one open to eat the seed, it takes me at least an hour to eat a bag. Sure seems like a lot more than 2 carbs, and I probably burn off all the calories just trying to open each seed. (This is a snack for home, not work.)
Let us know if you need any more help.

Awwwww Scarlett. I was hoping that you were going to say that things were going very well for you. :(

PLEASE hang in there. And PLEASE try to vary your meals. Right now I am looking at the menu for the first week of induction on the Atkins site: http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/14-373858.html
Lots of "different" things on there.

I am not an egg eater, so I can't tire of the eggs. So for breakfast, on Monday I had some sausage links. Yesterday and today I had a crustless quiche that I made with 5 XL eggs and 3/4 cup of cream. I added 1/2 pound of crumpled sausage (cooked and drained), 1 cup mozzarella cheese, 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes, 1/4 cup of sliced green onions, 1/8 tsp basil, 1/8 tsp oregano. 1/2 tsp garlic salt. But you can add ANYTHING! Seafood, ham, chicken, and different cheeses too! There are those sausage and egg "muffins" that is in the low carb recipe thread at the top of the page that sound great too!

On Monday I had london broil to eat for dinner. I used it for salad yesterday at lunch too. Had it for a snack last night. Last night I had wings that I had baked with butter and seasonings. Yum! Tonight I am having grilled chicken and some brocolli and salad. I will make a few extra chicken breasts for some other meals.

I have shrimp in the freezer to make some scampi with too! Can't wait!

One meal at a time Scarlett. One meal at a time.

(BTW - I don't have that metallic taste in my mouth - yet. Does EVERYONE on Atkins get it? )

i'm doing better now that i've had something other than a salad for lunch! i normally love salads, but when that's all i've eaten for the past few lunches, i bore of them quite easily! my DH tries to vary the toppings on mine for me a bit, but it's not helping...honestly, the hamburger patty with bacon did the trick for me. i feel a bit better now...DH and i are going to pour over some recipes tonight and figure out what else we can try during induction...

I had cheeseburgers both Monday and today. :)

I am so glad that you are feeling better - see - one meal at a time. Be sure not to think of thsis in the same way that you think of most diets - meats and fats are GOOD! So you definately need more than "just" a salad to make a meal.

Keep up the good work and keep posting! :)

Brandie...I am sending you a PM....but first here are some {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}]

well...we had a minor setback...:(

my DH was doing this with me...and we were doing GREAT!! well, aside from the horrific flavor in our mouths and my other complaints...:teeth:

anyway, DH is very sick right now and we aren't sure what's causing it. he's had a fever for 3 days that won't go away. he's having a hard time breathing and just feels yucky. he began feeling this way right before we officially started the plan. he was concerned that he was depriving his body of sugar and such or whatever he's normally used to and was afraid that if he didn't give his body what it was used to that he wouldn't be able to fight whatever it is that he's got. so on our way home from work tonight, we agreed to stop the atkins plan and when he's healthy again, we'll start all over...

i thought about continuing on my own, but i want to do this WITH him...i'm hoping that he kicks whatever bug has bitten him so that we can start again next week...:(

he's not sure if the atkins plan has anything to do with how he's feeling or not, but once he feels better, we'll try again, and if this happens again, then we'll just have to find something else...

Brandie, I hope your DH feels better soon!!

I never got the metallic taste in my mouth, but on day 4 of Induction, I got very, very sick...like sick to my stomach and it was awful, but the very next day, I was a whole new person! LOL I was waking up early, doing excersizes, eating right...I was amazed at even myself!

I absolutely love eggs, so I never have a problem with breakfast, but some mornings, I do have crumbled hamburger with cheese...:)

well, he's feeling a bit better already...his fever is back down a bit, but we've already eaten stuff that's not on the approved induction list...so we'll pick it back up at the beginning of next week...:)

Scarlett - Welcome fellow cheerleader! I hope you and DH are feeling good and have an easy transition back on track.

I found some a good high protein snack was soy nuts. They do have some carbs, and would not be induction food, but can be something you can keep in a drawer for an emergency. I also found snacking on string cheese was a favorite!
