Daughter's hair part is widening -

My first thought was trichotillomania. Trich is a condition where you pull your hair out. my dd16 does this and she had a wide part due to do.

Personally, I think this is probably the problem. As a hairdresser for 27 years, this is more common that people think. I see it all too often in teen girls.

I'm thinking it's trich-I had it horribly in high school, and had a big bald spot as a result.

Im 25 and have been using a ceramic iron to straighten my hair for over7 years and haven't gotten any bald spots...the only other suggestion that I can think of that hasnt already been mentioned is maybe she is getting the iron too close to her scalp? maybe if she is consistently burning her scalp every time she irons she has damaged the hair follicles enough so that they dont produce any more hair?

The only reason I am thinking of this is because my 7yo neice has had a bald spot about the size of a dime on her head since she was about 3 yo b/c she had a little scab on her scalp and would pick at it constantly to the point that the hair follicles were so damaged they couldnt produce hair anymore....

I think what others have suggested is a good idea, change up the part and try some hair/scalp conditioning treatments and see if that helps....

DD15 used to have trich. She had it as a toddler so they don't classify it the same way-for her it was more of a soothing think like sucking her thumb and she eventually out grew it but she spent most of her toddler years basically bald because of it. I would have to say from experience that it would be odd just to have her pulling hair from her part and not somewhere less noticeable if it were trich.

As to to taking the straightener away from a 19 year old, why? She's an adult and her thin hair doesn't bother her?!?! It doesn't look bad at all. I was just giving the OP an idea as to why her daughter's hair may be coming out.

You have to make sure its ceramic. My SIL used a regular one and the hair in the front of her head started to fall out. Once she switched to ceramic it was fine. I would check on that!

Hate to disagree, but I have too. I see it a lot in parts and in the very back of the part, right at the top of the head. I always wonder why they pull it out from a noticable part of their heads instead of underneath. :confused3 Eyelashes are also quite common. :( Many of the kids will do this at night while trying to relax while going to sleep. I suppose it is a stress/soothing type of thing. I remember one lady telling me her DD put the pulled hair under her bed. :(

I've been using a straightener since I was 12 and have never run into that. I would take her to the doctor.

from a 19 year old college student?? I owuld think she would just go get another one.
Isn't she 12? I wasn't really serious, anyway, because I have a 13 year old who I would have a hard time taking a straightener from. She would make my life so miserable that I would just give it back!

The OP's daughter is 12. The one told to take the straightener away (the "you're the parent post" in response to the thin ponytail question's response) has a 19 year old daughter.

OP Here- thanks everyone for your advice. We're going to see if in a month or two if the hair grows back. It looks like it is because I see fly-aways growing. If not, we will definitely go see a doctor.
