Daisy Girl Scout Leaders

Thanks!!! This actually their second trip.. I took them in the spring as first years daisies also :thumbsup2

Im wondering if I should hide any Fairy items in the woods for them to find on the hike.

Sounds like fun! We're not allowed to take Daisy's on overnight trips here, so we have to wait until we are Brownies.

Absolutely!! That would be awesome!!

I know our SU highly discourages it ... maybe its not allowed either...I'm not sure.

I do know that we have to have a camp "specialist" with us ... I"m hoping to take the training this spring or next fall ...I'd love to do an overnight in spring 2012 (yes, planning ahead).
=====================

Also, forgot to mention thanks for the head's up on the booklets that are expiring. We decided not to do Journeys this year so I guess we'll do whatever the new book is next year (my story...tell it).

NO, I'm sorry you misunderstood. I was asking if they were coming out with a new "Guide for Daisy Leaders" like the one they have now that has nothing about the Journeys in it. I know they are coming out with a new Journey book.

Thanks.

Kelly

Sorry, I guess that is what happens when you post before 8am lol (insert yawning smiley here). To answer the question correctly.... I do not know. I do agree that the book is very outdated. I am glad someone else was awake enough to answer you correctly.

Need some suggestions:

I am taking my Daisy troop camping this weekend. Decided very last minute to go with a Fairy Theme. Got each girl fairy wings and accessories at walmarts 90% off Halloween sale:thumbsup2. I also found these cute Fairy fun patches.

We are getting to camp Saturday evening.. doing dinner and campfire.. plan on making "Fairy Houses" I am going to start them ahead of time and let them girls finish them.

Saturday morning is breakfast on the campfire and off to explore the camp. We have a nice lake, beach, miniature golf, duck pin bowling alley. We are only there until 1:30 and are doing quick sandwiches for lunch (trying to give you a time frame)

Does anyone have any Fairy themed stories for the camp fire of any other themed activities for the day. They girls will be wearing their wings for their travels around the camp on Saturday.

I have heard different stories about daisies camping. I have heard yes, I have heard yes if all the mom's come. I was also told to camp, but not call it a Girls Scout function and invite only girls in your troop. We would love to camp. You are lucky.

You could buy some glittery hair spray, which should be at least 75% off from Halloween. I know my Walmart had some. This could be their pixie dust. You could also have them make magic wands. They could also make some kind of bell or something that makes a bell noise. Let us know how it goes. Sounds like a lot of fun!

That's such a shame to hear so many councils discourage or just flat out dont allow Daisies to camp:guilty:.

I have 6th grade Cadettes and they started camping as daisies also.

I love the glitter idea and even having a bell for making noises... I am thinking about going ahead and planting a fairy every so often.. at the end each girl will have their own fairy to keep to put in their fairy house. I like the idea of ringing the bells when they find each fairy.

Hi I am a retired girl scout leader, I did daisey, brownies and juniors for my 2 DD's. One went from Daisey up to cadets and earned a Bronze Award, the other only went thru brownies. I loved being a leader but it was a huge time committment! Also ended up being cookie parent for most of the years!! Good luck with your troops. The one daisey activity I enjoyed was getting fabric paints, white t shirts and a daisey paterned sponge and i had the girls decorate their "uniform" shirt. The moms had decided that since it was only one year we do these instead of having them purchase the actual uniform at the time.

Welcome and congrats on your GS, esp the Cadette!

I'm glad they changed the Daisy program to be two years -- makes the uniforms, petals, patches and books last longer!

At our SU meeting last night, we had an Introduction to Selling Cookies. My leader and I decided we are not going to sell cookies. 1) Our moms said they didn't want to sell cookies and no one volunteered to be the cookie mom. Both my co-leader and I said, we are doing enough. 2) We don't have any big plans for this year and any additional costs for activities are going to be paid by the parents. (We also had a buffer built into the troop dues to cover some extra expenses)

I do have to re-look at our Troop Travel Packets. For some reason I thought they were only for big trips but our SU explained last night that if we even leave the room to go outside to plant flowers (one of our upcoming meetings), then we need to have all these forms filled out. Of course we also need them for when we do our fashion show/caroling at the senior center and when we go to our co-leaders house to bake muffins!! I counted all the forms and number of copies for everyone (Adult in Charge, 1st Aider, Drivers (4 in our case) and Contact Person and it comes to over 50 pages!

This is sooooo ridiculous!

OK enough venting -- I'm just tired of all the administrative work. Two of my moms have boy scouts and they said they barely have to fill out one paper all year long! (ok, I'm sure that's an exaggeration but still...)

Last night at our meeting we took tin veggie cans and turned them into a craft. The kids turned them into candy dishes to set on their tables at Thanksgiving. We also colored pictures and will mail them to a local nursing home. The kids enjoyed it I forget how much quicker 5-6 yr olds are with crafts compared to my daycare kids. We got done a little earlier than planned but the kids played till parents came.

SO CUTE!! I love this!

For your fairy houses, you really must look at Tracey Kane's Fairy House series. She has a wonderful website, several books, and even a DVD. I have met Tracy on several occasions, and she is just magical and lovely with kids! Tracy promotes a real movement that began many years ago in the Northeast of incorporating nature with building your fairy house. http://www.fairyhouses.com/about-fairy-houses/ This would work perfeclty with your camping trip - perhaps even earn your use resources wisely or make the world a better place petal. Read this article here http://www.fairyhouses.com/releases-2/nature-deficit-disorder/ I love how this activity combines nature and imagination!

So fun. I think I may even do this as a spring activity - not ready for camping per se, but definitely a nature walk and fairy house building activity! :goodvibes

I'm joining in -- just talked to my dd's daisy leader and she is taking over as service unit director so I will be taking over as Daisy Leader-I can't wait to get started. I went camping with the girls earlier this fall and it was so much fun. They are a blast!

Hope you all are having fun with your troops. We are getting ready to have a garden party and handing out the garden patch the center of the petal and another petal they have earned.

We are going to start on the parents presents for christmas next month.

Cookie training start next month. I cannot wait.:cool1:

Had our 3rd meeting last night. We handed out the Investiture patches (the girls had the ceremony last time but we hadn't planned to purchase patches. Then our council gave us the patches for free :cool1: so the girls were all excited about it.

Then last night they also earned the Yellow Friendly and Helpful petal. We talked about how to be friendly and helpful to our friends and even to people we meet at the playground, walking to school, etc.

Then we mixed all the ingredients to make Pumpkin-Berry Muffins and decorated them with "leaf people". I'll post a pic once I upload. So we talked about how some people don't have homes or much food and so we are baking muffins for them to have food to eat.

We shared our Daisy Activity Book (pages 3-5 that they did at home) and then passed our Daisy Doll mascot (I'll post a pic of her too, my co-leader sewed her) to the 2nd girl who gets to take her home with her and write in the journal.

We had a great time and I really can't wait for the next meeting! I didn't think I'd like it so much ... I knew my daughter would but it is really a great experience for me, too!:goodvibes

Hey There-

I am a SU Coordinator as well as a troop leader of 10 3rd graders. I have been planning a lot of events and giving out ideas on how to run meetings or meeting ideas.

Let me know if I can help in anyway.

I feel the same way - I'm really enjoying this. Of course, I'm a planner, so I have most of the year planned out already and just like planning for a vacation, I enjoy the planning as much as the actual vacation or event. :yay:

Tonight is my first meeting with my 2nd year Daisys. They've had two meetings and then a huge break because their leader took over as unit service leader and just couldn't do both. I'm excited and nervous. My printer messed up last night as I was trying to print off schedules, sign up sheets, and a newsletter!! I was able to print them in color and my husband printed off some coloring sheets at work. We are going to do a lesson on how we are different and special. I have a foam craft that they will use to make their names beautiful. I am going to talk to them about bringing in donations for our local humane society at the next meeting (we will wrap them like christmas gifts then) - sign up for cookie rally and the visit to the humane society. Each meeting I'm going to use give them a coloring sheet when they come in about the gs law so we can keep it as a refresher. I also have a game just in case they get done quicker then I plan. I doubt we'll need it, because there are 15 girls and who will be getting a chance to talk about themselves and each other!

fyi-Another mom suggested hemming tape to attach all the badges on the back of the uniform (the petals and flower are iron on, but the fun patches aren't) Wow it is wonderful--I finally got my junior daughters patches all on and my daisy's patches on the back.. It looks great and was really inexpensive and much, much easier then sewing!! My junior gs helped use the iron too.

I am SO frustrated right now! I did all the training and have emailed like a dozen times to no avail. Last I heard was two weeks ago that they had 17 girls interested and were going to get a co-leader for the troop and they would let me know something the following week.

Nothing. At this point I asked since they can't accommodate starting a new troop to find a troop for my daughter and that we would travel up to 20 miles. Zero. Nothing.

I am starting to thing there isn't so much a lack of volunteers but a lack of follow through on the GS's part.

I think we will investigate 4H at this point.

For those in your situation, if you want your dd in girl scouts and have no troop available, you can register her as a Juliette (a girl scout without a troop but with the benefits of being a girl scout). It means you work with her on the badges but she can attend the different programs available to troops and scouts of her level. My 12 year old is now a Cadette and my youngest is a Brownie. I have a friend whose daughter is also a Brownie and a Juliette. We were told that if we had 5 girls we could start a troop and not be required to take anymore kids. For now we have the girls get together and work on their badges/try-its together. I already have my leadership training completed from when my 12 year old was a Brownie and I was co-leader the second troop she was in. We had bad experiences and she stopped Girl Scouts but is happy to be back in them now even though it is without a troop.

Hey, thanks for this info! I was wondering what a Juliette was and now I know!

Ok, I hope everyone has terrific GS meetings ... I'm off to Disney today!!:cool1:

And away we go!! The doll is the Girl Scout Daisy Doll mascot. As you can see, she has each of the Daisy Petal colors around her head.

My DD5 wants to take her to meet Mickey and the Princesses! We'll put some clothes on her, too!

OK, Off to Disney World!:cool1::banana:

So, how is everyone doing with earning their petals? So far, we have only done 2 petals. We will only have one meeting in December because of Christmas holidays, in which we will have a Christmas party, but then starting in January, we will get serious about earning the rest of the petals.

Anyone doing the Journeys? Are you following the book or coming up with your own ideas?

Thanks.

Kelly
