Daisy Girl Scout Leaders

So, how is everyone doing with earning their petals? So far, we have only done 2 petals. We will only have one meeting in December because of Christmas holidays, in which we will have a Christmas party, but then starting in January, we will get serious about earning the rest of the petals.

Anyone doing the Journeys? Are you following the book or coming up with your own ideas?

Thanks.

Kelly

We just fined out last petal last night :woohoo::woohoo:Well atleast my daughters and my co'leaders daughter did.

I wont back track petals and have been telling those parents whose girls missed meeting they could make them up. Very few have.

We also have one meeting in December so we are having a christmas party and they are getting all their fun patches and petals I owe them.

We are starting the journeys in January. I am going to go with the garden one. I have a children s museum in town that had programs to along with it.

I am soo not a fan of the Journeys.. but have to suck it up lol

At the end of this year we will have earned 7 petals -- we're doing one per month.

We aren't doing Journeys, and I'm glad we aren't. We only meet for 1 hour, twice a month and we have so many fun things planned that I can't even see how we'd have time for Journeys.

We are assigning "homework" each week in the Daisy Activity Book and then we share it with everyone the next week. I call it our "DaisyShare" time.

I anticipate doing Journeys next year, after we complete our petals. Hopefully, we can also start on-time (September) and not wait until November so we'll have two more months to plan.

Tomorrow we make our wreaths and Xmas pens for the "Nanas and Papas" Christmas Fashion Show and Caroling on the 15th! The girls are so excited about being Fashion Models!

what kind of wreaths and pens aer you making? I'm trying to figure out what we are going to be doing for our Christmas party. I've still got two weeks to figure it out.
this week we are doing animal/pet care and safety. We are also collecting things to donate to the humane society and we are going to make some catnip toys out of socks-then wrap them as Chrismtas gifts.

Awesome pics! what fun!!

Thanks for sharing. I know your girls had so much fun!

I picked up Fairy wings and matching skirts from Wal-mart's after Halloween sale for $1 each!! (90% off) and we are giving them to our girls, with a few other things for Christmas presents. I made sure to get the pink and blue ones so they didn't look like it was Halloween!:lmao:

AC Moore had the regular green wreaths (maybe 18 or 24") on sale so we purchased two of them. Then our GS had leftover Christmas wreath-making decorations from last year so we are going to clip them onto the wreaths. Then I'll add some ribbon to make a bow and to hang the wreath. We also got the ribbon free from Freecycle in my area. I'll just have to laminate a tag to put our girl scout troop number on it.

For pens, we just picked up 60 pens from Target for about $2, got Floral tape and again are using those free Christmas-wreath decorating items. We'll attach the decoration to the pen using floral tape and voila! We have a cute little gift to hand out.

The only issue is to make sure the girls wrap the floral tape around tightly enough.

I love that you are making cat-nip toys!! That is awesome and I might use that idea for next year. I think a visit to the Animal Shelter would be great.

I saw a really cute Gingerbread man project (think paper chain with gingerbread men) on-line that we were thinking of doing, too, but ran out of time. A short-cut is to make a g-man design but add a square on top of the g-man's head. Then have the girls color/glitter, etc. then you take the square and fold it over on a string or ribbon and glue it to the back of the g-man's head. Keep doing that for 10-20 gingerbread men and you have homemade garland for your tree, room, etc.

Obviously you can change up with Santas, Angels, Snowmen, etc.

SO CUTE!! I love this!

For your fairy houses, you really must look at Tracey Kane's Fairy House series. She has a wonderful website, several books, and even a DVD. I have met Tracy on several occasions, and she is just magical and lovely with kids! Tracy promotes a real movement that began many years ago in the Northeast of incorporating nature with building your fairy house. http://www.fairyhouses.com/about-fairy-houses/ This would work perfeclty with your camping trip - perhaps even earn your use resources wisely or make the world a better place petal. Read this article here http://www.fairyhouses.com/releases-2/nature-deficit-disorder/ I love how this activity combines nature and imagination!

So fun. I think I may even do this as a spring activity - not ready for camping per se, but definitely a nature walk and fairy house building activity! :goodvibes
wow that is soo cute and love the idea. Great pictures of them.

Hey There-

I am a SU Coordinator as well as a troop leader of 10 3rd graders. I have been planning a lot of events and giving out ideas on how to run meetings or meeting ideas.

Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Samantha
oh thanks for coming over. I do have a few questions and hope you can answer...for the swap do you just make anything that goes on the safety pins? how do you get ideas for them and is it just swaping between other troops?

And away we go!! The doll is the Girl Scout Daisy Doll mascot. As you can see, she has each of the Daisy Petal colors around her head.

My DD5 wants to take her to meet Mickey and the Princesses! We'll put some clothes on her, too!

ohh love the mascot doll was she easy to make do you have instructions.

Last month we only had one meeting and no outing. They will earn the friendly and helpful petal. Not yet sure which petal to do yet for Dec since I need to figure out which ones are available; I had each mom sign up to do a petal for our troop so this will help me and help them be involved too. The first 15 minutes will be talking about the cookie sales. I got a snowflake activity for them to do also. We do have a cake decorating class on Sat which they will get a fun patch. Then we will do a service for mom's group here. I did get
a fun patch for that.

I also signed up for the postcard exchange http://www.mythinkingday.com/ which will go towards being a friend to every girl scout petal

My co-leader made the dolls and then at the end of the year, we are having the girls make their own dolls to take home. So it definitely can't be that hard to do.

I can have my co-leader email you instructions if you want. It isn't anything formal, I think she just made it up as she went, but she could give you an idea of what she did. Just PM me if you want her email.

I will check out the postcard exchange -- thanks!

girls met last night. We had a christmas card making meeting. The kids made xmas cards to mail to area children hospitals. We also started collecting pop tabs for December to donate to the Ronald Mc Donald House. I was surprised how well it went over. Printed coloring pages off the internet for xmas. The girls colored them, cut them out, and pasted them to the front of contruction paper. Then they decorated the inside with stickers and drawings they did.

We have the center and two petals. They earned another petal last week so we will give it to them at the next meeting, which means they will have the center and three.

We are going to work on another petal this month and do christmas presents for the parents and have a christmas party. Does anyone have any ideas on what kind of present to do for the dad's? We have something planned for the mom's. We also have something planned us to give the girls and for the girls to give each other, while working on a petal.

We have also completed the Garden Journey and are going to start Earth and Sky in January. We followed the book to get ideas and then added our own. We did not do every little thing they listed, but did enough for the girls to understand what they were working towards. If anyone has any question or would like any idea, let me know. I do not mind sharing what we have done.:flower1:(this should be this threads logo lol)

Yes, please share what you did for the Journey book.

Thanks.

Kelly

We put lima beans in a damp paper towel and put them in a zip lock. We had the girls take them home, water them, and allow them to start sprouting. They brought them back and we planted them in cups of dirt. We made "bugs" to put in our plants. We did this insead of planting them together so the girls could take them home and be "responsible" for them.

We made bird feeders and a snack for themselves also.

We played outside in nature, played amimal charades (sp), talked about nature, learned hello in the different languages and of course a service project.

We read the garden book to the girls and asked questions as we were reading.

We would not do every little thing they listed. We would choose the ones the girls would like the best and incoporate are own ideas in based on what we read and they listed.

I am sure we may have done more, but looking at my notes this is what I found. The leader has the book so I cannot look.

I hope this was helpful. What ideas have you all done for the girls to earn petals?

:flower1::flower1::flower1::flower1::flower1::flower1::flower1: Go Daisies! :thumbsup2

We had our service unit cookie rally today and then drove to the humane society to drop off our gifts and get a tour. The girls had a blast!! The humane society had puppies--the girls loved playing with them and knowing that it's fun to help others!!

Thursday will be our Christmas party--we are going to do a couple of crafts, having a snack (normally we don't) and doing a small gift exchange-I found a left right story that we may use to distribute the gifts. Hopefully we have enough time to get everything done.

Playing with the puppies must have been great!

We have our Christmas Fashion Show, caroling and gift-giving on Wednesday. I'm sure it will be great but I'm nervous b/c when we practiced the girls were just going crazy jumping and swinging their arms while showing off their dresses. Should be interesting at least!:lmao:

Looks like everyone had some wonderful activities this month. I had to many things to do in one meeting and we didn't get everything done. We had a 15 minute activity for the girls to do on cookie sales - was coloring/making a cell phone while the cookie mom talked to us about presales. This took about 25 minutes. Then they signed some holiday cards for some of the girls to take to nursing homes that won't be able to attend our tour this Sat - which is a community service for mom's in need.

They then made gifts of little jars of kisses for the parents which said when you need a kiss....love... we ran out of time and I handed out the patches/petals they earned, and a small gift of goodies for them. We unfortuantly didn't get to read the book I borrowed boxes for Katje, snowflakes ornaments, or make holiday crackers...yup way to many things to do.

So the Sat outing is for the spring green petal and I gave make up forms for the two parents that won't be there. And one mom was a little shocked - her older daughter has been in gs for a few years now and said that weekends should be for fun patches and meetings to earn their petals. She said it was the first time she seen make up forms and it being so structured. Then mentioned that some girls will get their petals and others won't "ummm that's why there is make up forms". I do understand her point and I also have 3 little kids but what is the difference if they can't make it to the gs meeting vs a weekend. I know if we do a police tour or fire station tour, that it might be on the weekend instead of a week night. Are you doing petals only on the meeting times only?

Sounds like they all had a great time.

I absolutly have them earn petals, try-its etc outside of meeting time.

I plan certain trips around they earned badge. Thats the first time I have ever heard badge earning is for meetings only and I have a few troops and I am a sum.

My girls just finished their petals and I have a few that are missing some. I am no back tracking. Those that missed acually missed ones we did at meeting.

Remember that you are the leader and can run your meetings as you wish! You are the one volunteering, organizing, planning, creating, etc. So if the mom doesn't like the way it is run, well, then maybe she should have volunteered to be the leader.

Now, I'll step down from my soap box ...

Our girls are mostly earning their petals at the meetings. We have only one event (Etiquette, Tea Party, Easter Egg Hunt to earn the "Responsible for what I say and do" petal) on a Saturday.

We were able to schedule our Police tour and the Christmas Fashion Show during our normal GS meeting.

For those that miss a petal, I have the moms work on the petal with their daughters at home and come back and tell us what they did. We are trying hard to make sure the girls get the petals all around the same time. Just the way we wanted to do it. So far only one girl missed a meeting b/c she was sick.

With Daisy's, we try to have 1 parent for every three girls. That way we can actually get a real craft done. If the girls spend their time running around, then the meeting is a total waste.

If the leader is willing to come up with the agenda and have the materials to keep the crafts going, then the parents (or babysitter) should plan to attend every third or fourth meeting.

fyi-Another mom suggested hemming tape to attach all the badges on the back of the uniform (the petals and flower are iron on, but the fun patches aren't) Wow it is wonderful--I finally got my junior daughters patches all on and my daisy's patches on the back.. It looks great and was really inexpensive and much, much easier then sewing!! My junior gs helped use the iron too.

I have a daughter who is an 8th grade Cadette. I have two words for you in regards to "sewing" on badges: Badge Magic. This stuff is amazing. It's a super adhesive that is available in the various badge shapes (the earned ones that go on the front of vest/sash.) Peel off one side, attach it to the badge, peel off the other side and press it on the garment. The badge won't fall off in the wash. Found it at my local council store. If you have difficulty finding it, go to badgemagic.com. They have sheets available that can be cut to the patch shape for the ones that go on the back.
