2006 saw the release of three big animated movies: Cars, Monster House, and Happy Feet. I haven't seen Happy Feet, but I saw the other two. In fact, I just finished watching Monster House. I was utterly APPALLED by it.
The movie, overall, was complete trash. The story was pathetic, the "romance" was completely uncalled for, and the details were dissapointing. Furthermore, it didn't deserve the name 'family animated movie.' I don't care how you feel about censorship, but when you make a children's movie that you know a lot of people are going to to see, you DO NOT have little kids use phrases like "got some beer?" "cut the crap," "I suck," "we're screwed," and you do not have policemen saying "oh it looks like they got high on pixie sticks." You DO NOT have a babysitter's boyfriend come over and get drunk. These are most certainly NOT the tenets of a children's film! The parents are indifferent and to a certain extent, austere, and the tone was dark.
I have come to the conclusion that with a few (maybe five) exceptions, such as Shrek, you really have to be Disney to make a decent animated movie. If you look back since Snow White, you see a nonstop line of excellent, high quality, family friendly, well-thought out, purposeful, intelligent, cultured, classy animated movies. There are exceptions, as can be expected, but overall, Disney has a reputation for distinguihed excellence in the family entertainment industry. Whether it's Disney itself, Pixar, or Studio Ghibli, you are pretty much guaranteed excellece and a superior product.
Compare MH to Cars. Cars was one of the two other major animated movies of 2006. In Cars, like it or not, you see wonderful animation, a carefully crafted moral that teaches the balance between winning and losing, encourages perseverance, honesty, and responsibility, and lovable characters. The story is entertaining and a breath of fresh air in the cinema.
Compare MH to a similar type of movie with a similar plot. The movie has a haunted place of residence and inquisitive people trying to stop the terror and figure out what the mystery is. You guessed it, Disney's Tower of a Terror, released in the Halloween of 1997 as a Disney Channel Original Movie. You see a similar concept, but you also see drastically different execution. TOT is polished, and although it is not animated, still entertains the family. Yes, there is evil and hatred in the movie, but more importantly, you see that thi can be overcome without brutally destroying the hotel. Both have haunted spirits, but MH's spirit is a woman who hates children and essentialy has to be blown up to stop her reign of terror. Sounds great, doesn't it?
Compare MH to any of the other Disney Halloween movies. MH takes place on Halloween, and shows a boy's adventure on that night. Every year, Disney rolls out one of their own Halloween movies. Even though these movies are low budget Disney Channel Original Movies, they still intellectualy trump Monster House. Look at the first Halloweentown movie. This cute movie has a 13 year old girl battling evil, but she doesn't have to be ignorant and violent. While the boy in MH starts out hating the old man, Marnie shows that family strength is important from the getgo, creating a bond with her grandmother. THe kid in MH has to have it spelled out for him.
Compare it to a Disney Classic like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, the Little Mermaid, the Fox and the Hound, 101 Dalmations, Mulan, Hercules, the Lion King, the Aristocats, Tarzan, Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Mary Poppins, Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, The Sword in the Stone, the Rescuers, the Great Mouse Detective, Lilo and Stitch, Pocahontas, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the classic Mickey cartooms, the Pixar Films, and the Studio Ghibli Films, and there is really no comparison. Disney knows how to make a good children's movie. They have done it 100 times and they can do it again. Disney's the name, animation's the game.
Sorry that this is long, but I just have to get this off of my chest. I could not believe what trash that movie turned out to be! We watched it, and when it finished, we saw Cars on the other station. Five minutes of that completely showed up MH.
I am just so glad that the world has Disney to ensure that there will always be movies made with integrity and quality.
