D-Day Invasion- "Strange"-ly Imminent!! TRIP REPORT IS UP!!

Good Morning all !!! Worked till 1 am as my relief was late:scared1:Ethel says the Springfield area may NOT be good !!! I am looking at Hagerstown as it is on the way back , I think Ethel is looking for different areas to !!

Can't believe glenbo thinks we might do some silly things :rolleyes1:rolleyes1:rotfl2:Pity the halloween costumes aren't out I might have found a Lucy one :lmao::lmao:

POP presented a problem when it came to choosing a scent. Nothing stood out to me as a clear winner for the task, as Pop itself is such a mish-mash of this and that. I could have gone with spaghetti scent for Lady and the Tramp, but no one makes spaghetti-scented soap; I could have gone with Play Dough scent, but that wasn’t so appealing either. And of course, there’s always stale smoke like you’d find in a bowling alley, but that’s not so nice at all.

So once again, it came down to inexpensive. Or even better yet- FREE!! You all should know me by now. I like free. And I figured since I wasn’t going to be spending a lot of time at the POP, I probably won’t be luxuriating in the tub a whole lot. So why spend money on something you don’t need? Nevertheless, I did want a scent for this portion to balance out the trip purchases. Every resort deserved a fair “scent collection”. It just didn’t seem right to have scents for the Poly and the POR, and not have one for POP, so here’s what I found.

While I was searching the BestBath site, I ran across this:

For a whopping $2.95, I found a little lip balm- orange scented.

Orange_LipBalm150.jpg

So you see, I went with the very random ORANGE/CITRUS scent. OK, since, there has to be a connection somewhere, I suppose this IS Florida. Orange Julius’ ARE very retro cool too, and the scent of orange takes me back to my childhood home faster than butter melts on the Steppe in summer. Hemet, CA was sprawling with orange groves and every evening the scent would spread across the valley, and we’d drink in its intoxicating smell. It was LOVELY! AH, my childhood, filled with all kinds of playdough, Twister, PacMan, and oranges. It seems that cheap + memories make orange scent the perfect one for POP.

And once again, I wasn’t satisfied with just a little lip balm, so I plopped “orange” into the search option and looky what I found!!!! This tickles my free bone:

summercitruss_salts250.jpg

A little sample packet of summer citrus bath salts, just enough for ONE bath of memory-inducing luxury.

And that’s not all- check this out:

oranges_bar160.jpg

A tiny bar of orangy soap for FREEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

For a total of $2.95, I came out with the perfect (for me) 3rd “Scent of the Trip” package.

I admit, I really wanted your input on the POP One; in fact, I almost put up a little poll, but since I was on the site, and HAD To do my shopping all together ,so as to avoid double shipping costs, I had to just pull the trigger. BUT, it still leaves me wondering- Had I asked, what would you have suggested?? My creative was just not happening, so I’d love to have your retrospective opinions!

Yes, I was remembering that you hinted once at a game where knowledge of the past posts would come in handy! ;) But that wasn't the motivation. I just really enjoy to find out how the story of this trip unfolds! :goodvibes And I must say that I really love reading Maroo's posts. I kind of started to miss her on this PTR now. I understand that having time to DIS is luxury and I don't want to stress her, but I feel like I got to know her a bit through her previous posts and would love to get to know her better! :goodvibes

I love orange as a scent for POP! I think it fits well. I would have suggested green apple or candy. And what a deal you got on your citrus products. Citrus is one of my favourite smells overall. :cloud9:

The weather here is still unbearable. We got a new record for Berlin yesterday and went up to 100 degrees! And it did not get cold either tonight, the low was 71... :sad2: I think you are right about the temperature being the reason why you don't have any energy for your run. Also, you might have some dehydration problems? You might do better if you make sure to really drink a lot for the few hours before your run. But then, it might be healthier not to run at all in this kind of weather. I was really glad that I could go to the swimming pool at my gym yesterday to get some exercise...

I love the orange! Growing up in the OC, I know the scent you are reminiscing about. DH and I lived right next to an orange grove for about a year. It was intoxicating!

I suppose POP having a theme of nostalgia, I would say something extra fruity, like Hubba Bubba gum, or Dr Pepper lip balm. I think you did fine with the orange though. And I love me some free stuff too!:thumbsup2

It's quite a story! With a bunch of surprises along the way- even to me!

I MISS her posts too!! Maroo, WHERE ARE YOU!!

Those would have both been good!! I think POP lends itself to several good choices.

Drinking more is a good idea. I"ve been trying to go about 2-3 hours after dinner, so maybe it's just that the heat and from being in a food coma has something to do with it?? A pool would be fabulous!

I didn't know you grew up in OC!! We were neighbors!

Those too, are very good scents. I do love the Dr. Pepper scented ANYTHING!! :thumbsup2

I like the orange scent for Pop because it harkens to your childhood memories, which is really what Pop is all about! :goodvibes

Was out of touch over the weekend, so just catching up. This DC DISmeet is really taking wings, along with your final days before heading this way to rejoin us. I really wish I could be in DC with you all! It sounds like somebody needs to be there who knows how to behave and set the proper example...
Let’s switch gears somewhat, and focus now on a completely different kind of southern locale; not of South Seas Islands, but of southern states where plantations stand nobly, surrounded by cypress trees and cotton fields. Picture it now, a hot summer afternoon – time for an afternoon rest on the wraparound porch, sipping a mint julep or ice cold lemonade.

Wow, what memories you invoke. I loved going to visit my Grandparents. They owned a 100+ acre farm, and driving up the long dirt driveway you came up to their white farmhouse, with plowed and planted fields on each side. We used to spend endless hours as kids sitting on the front porch. Just off the porch was a huge oak tree, filled with spanish moss. It always provided shade to the porch. Living in the south, we didn't get to enjoy a "mint julep" on that porch, but definitely lots of fresh squeezed lemonade. And you haven't lived until you've had a handmade biscuit hot out of the oven where your grandmother pokes her finger in the side, puts in fresh butter that she churned, and then pours in some sorghum molasses for you to enjoy! There's one of those scents you never forget!

Something VERY special to me, and brings back a flood of memories

Of my Grandmother.

Those of you who’ve been following this PTR since last year, know that almost 1 year ago EXACTLY my Grandmother passed away. She was VERY dear to me, and I spend a lot of my childhood by her side. I’d spend long, wonderful weeks at a time at her home in Glendale, CA, and of course, at least once a year she’d treat me to a day at Disneyland- just she and I. Our favorite was Pirates of the Caribbean, and of course that brings us right back to Bayous, and the south.
When Grandma passed away, I flew back to the US to help my mother go through her things. I was given many things to pass along to my own children, but also was told to help myself to anything I’d need immediately- shoes, medications, you name it. On her bathroom counter was a little tube of lotion- Mary Kay Mint something or rather lotion. It was intoxicating at first sniff. I fell I love with it, and now it will forever remind me of her. It is going with me on this trip, and somehow, in that scent, she will “be with me”.
What a great way to honor your Grandma's memory! Those are definitely some special times to keep fresh in your thoughts!

Magic Meets was great! I am sorry they are doing it at sea this year otherwise I definitely would have gone again.

I think orange is a great scent for Pop! I completely agree with TK's reasoning! :thumbsup2 The things I think about when I think about Pop pretty much don't have a scent - tie dyed cheesecake, all of the big icons, etc. I laughed at the part about Pac-Man - I miss video games that I actually understand and can play!

Orange works for me !!! It reminds me of Soarin' my favorite ride and Pop is my favorite resort!!!!

I think Orange is a very good choice. I'm thinking about what I would choose for Pop and I'm coming up with only one thing. It's a vivid scent memory from my childhood and it was my Strawberry Shortcake doll, I had her and she smelled so good, and then I had one of her friends that smelled like blueberries. I might have gone with Strawberry as my Pop scent but only because of the memory from my childhood.

OMG! I had those dolls! :lmao:

I remember that scent distinctly. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch kid? The baby dolls had this particular smell, it was so sweet. :cloud9:

You know, as I was typing that I was thinking of the Cabbage Patch dolls too! I love that smell, brings me right back to childhood. :cloud9: I actually bought one of the dolls a few years ago when they did an anniversary doll and let me tell you, just opening that box I was flooded with that smell.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who remembers that. I even had Strawberry Shortcake sheets! :lmao: I can't wait for my nieces to be old enough to play with those toys. :goodvibes

I love orange for POP. It very much reminds me of my childood. Orange pop, Orange creamsicles, orange popsicles...

Either that or grape (popsicles), rootbeer (floats, bonne belle lip smacker), green apple (jolly ranchers) or watermelon (jolly ranchers).

:) It'd have been a tie, for me, between the orange and rootbeer but orange is a far better bath product scent!

Of course the smell of hawaiian tropic suntan oil is another one but then you veer into poly territory.

You know what, after this little installment, the POP has exponentially grown on me. Sometimes, I lie awake in bed wondering where those old friends are that I used go skinny dipping with, TP the neighborhood with, putt putt golf with, go to Little League games with, etc.... I wonder what they are doing, what they turned out like, and all that. I sometimes ache for the simplicity of life as a child, and the good times I had. I think POP may be very therpeutic indeed.

it really is!! Not too late to come on up! ;) and would that be YOU who can set examples?? :rolleyes1

Those are some very fabulous memories also!!! My grandparents got me hooked on sorghum also!! They are PURE Okie/Arkie!! One of each.

Grandparents are the GREATEST!!!

What a great way to honor your Grandma's memory! Those are definitely some special times to keep fresh in your thoughts!

I don't think some memories EVER go away. I really should keep blogging about all this stuff- to keep it all fresh!

My kids can practicaly program a computer, and I'm still stuck on PacMan, and Free Cell. :lmao:

Did you know the video for Soarin' flew right over my house in Hemet for the orange grove scene?? It really did!!!

I never had one of those, but I did have a Sunshine Family doll set WITH the vacation van. :cloud9: THey didn't smell though.

Ahhh, the connections we make here on the DIS. :goodvibes Who knew how much a doll from the 70s/80s could mean so much!

My other grandmother's favorite was orange creamsicles!!! I had totally forgotten that until you mentioned it!!!! :scared1: Now I KNOW there is a reason I chose orange!

Bonne Belle lip smacker!!!!! Another memory dredged up!! YOu're on a roll, Cynthia!!

DING, DING, DING!! Give that girl a prize!!! Hawaiian Tropic suntan oil!! Not lotion! OIL!! OMGosh! What a flashback kind of 10 minutes!!!

Well the TA is out of the office till Wednesday, but I think all the arrangements are made !!!I now have 2 more days to wait !!

Wednesday isn't too long to wait! Hope you got a great deal!

Yeah for someone to watch Kyle on Monday!! :woohoo: Seems like it's all set!

I am here! I am here!

Sorry for the hiatus. Sort of had a crazy weekend.

Hi Liesa, I am reading your PTR from the start - I figured there is so much that I missed. And it is a lot of fun. So many things I would like to comment on but the conversation has moved on for a year since then, so no point in that. But one thing I just came across: When you were promoted to seargants you mentioned that it meant commandeering 35 people. Which made me think of the DC DISmeet: I guess you are getting close to 35 people meeting there! :goodvibes

I was so sorry to read about your grandmother, but at least it meant that you got to meet Maroo. And Lauren and a bunch of lovely DISers.

I already emailed the corn dog nugget recipe to Katharina, I think we need to try to make them (without setting the kitchen on fire! I could even make them on medium flame, my cooker looks very much like yours. :goodvibes). Or the funnel cakes. I am sure Katharina's DH would love the funnel cakes!

It was so much fun to meet Liesa! And Lauren had a blast on that little trip! :goodvibes

:goodvibes:goodvibes

You are so sweet!

I am having a hard time keeping up over here. :rolleyes1

Magic Meets was so much fun!!! :)

We just have to go to the POP arcade - they have some old school arcade games like Pac Man and Centipede - so much fun to play. And "cheaper" with the card you get. :)

My ears were burning and I knew I'd better check what's been going on on this thread!

Let's see? Jenbear and Bubba, Jenb1023 (the 2 Jens), Glennbo (who's waffling since I might do embarrassing things :lmao:) , me, Ball of Wax (my sis), Rosie, and Tracy (Lucy and Ethel)- those are the for sures.

Well, if you recall the quote that started my waffling...I think it's pretty understandable.

I love that photo!! It is right by the Stave Church in the Norway Pavilion. I think in fact, the Kringla Bakery is right under it.

You are correct. You can kind of make out the exit door of Kringla Bakery, although it's kind of dark. If you look to the right of the tree, it's back in the corner. I got something in there during my trip. ;)

Can't believe glenbo thinks we might do some silly things :rolleyes1:rolleyes1:rotfl2:Pity the halloween costumes aren't out I might have found a Lucy one :lmao::lmao:

I heard you used to be shy.

Well who else??? :confused3 You know I am always proper and well behaved. ;) Surely you weren't thinking glennbo.... :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Hey, wait a second!
