Cuticle infection after manicure....help! Updated post#23

First, I wanted to thank all who replied.

Well, I am a little freaked out now and I called my primary care and he is not in today but I could see him tomorrow....hmm I am so busy tomorrow with kid stuff, so I called my insurance company to see if I could visit a "Minute Clinic." They said I could. So, I am heading over there NOW!!!

My brother had MRSA last summer in his armpit and it really got out of hand quickly so I think I should get someone to see it ASAP. Then I think I am going to go to the nail salon and show them my finger and my prescription and ask them what they plan on doing about it. I think I want my money back. I also will call the Board of Health and report the incident.

Thanks again!

I had a razor cut when I was 16 and ended up in the hospital for a few days getting an iv because the pills weren't working and my leg was all red and hot and I was having a hard time walking.

I had the exact same thing happen a couple of years ago. They told me it was cellulitis. I actually had to use crutches cause my leg hurt so bad.

Please don't ignore an infection. Sometimes they need more than just neosporin.

I posted on the first page about my experience at a salon. Today I got an letter form the Attorney General of Indiana on the final outcome of the complaint they filed. This started in June 2007...so 2 LONG years later things finally happened. The letter states that the license was places indefinitely on probation witn no right to petition for reinstatement for 1 year. I am assuming that if during this time there is a complaint or they fail an inspection chances are the license would not be renewed. In the end I am happy....they know what they did, they thought I'd walk away but I did not. I was only out the medical co-pay and prescription cost which they did offer to pay (thru an attorney thinking I'd go away)...it was only $50 so I ate the cost. I learned no manicures unless I take my things but in 2 years I have had 3 done. Even if a place looks spotless (my salon was an upscale one) watch to see that the tools come out of the blue barbasol and not get pulled out of the drawer. When the pedicurist comes to do a pedicure with the stool and plastic container of tools if you don't have your own make sure to ask for tools you can see come out of the sanitizer.

GOOD LUCK OP...hope you get better and please pursue this with the licensing agency or board of health. If it is not the correct place in your state they can direct you. Take the pics and get documentation (I had a letter from the doctor), save receipts and don't back down!

Well I just got back. I went to the clinic at CVS and nurse practitioner diagnosed me with Paronychia. (cuticle infection) she also prescribed Mupirocin antibiotic ointment (prescription strength)

She also said if it didn't start getting better in 3 days, I should go see my primary care physician.

So, I am going to print a picture of my hand (thumb)and copies of my receipts from the clinic and pay a little visit to the salon and demand a refund and reimbursement. They will probably refuse but, I will try.

Thanks again for the advice.:)

That ointment should work. That is what I used (see my PP). You should notice some improvement after one day; my throbbing and some redness went away over night. It took about 5 days though for all the redness to go away but it was progressing everyday!! It will take a while for the cuticle to reattach to the nail; it took mine about 7 weeks. I looked at it today after reading your post and noticed that it was finally reattached but I know two weeks ago it was still open.

I did notice you PP. The NP said I should continue using it for 10 days. Even if it starts to look better or completely healed.

Thanks for the telling me about your progress.:)

Yipes. I've only had 2 manicures (I had artificial nails for my prom and graduation in high school). Both times I saw the tools come out of the sterilizer. I would like to treat myself to a pedicure but I will bring my own tools. What should I bring, specifically?
