Cruisin' a DREAM and WDW July 2-July 15th TR updated 1/25:Final Entry! page 15

OK, OK, OK, I get it. I'm a *tad* slow on the posting. But it's an art people! An art! "You Can't Rush Art!". (name that movie!). I suffer for my art! Suffer I tell you! (yes I had to search for just the right smily for that one.

Ahem...well ok, I'm sorry that it took me so long to make it back. And naturally I am on a day that doesn't even have very many pictures so you are just going to get a bunch of typing from me. How boring is that? So go grab that extra cup of coffee (or 5 hour energy! So much faster than coffee! I hate those commercials!). The procrastinator's club meeting is now in session. As no one else has arrived I have named myself president and CEO.

Today is a sea day...so not much to rush around to do. But of course if you have been following along I don't do a lot of rushing around anyway, and DW will tell you that even at home there is no rushing out of me in the morning. I thoroughly enjoy vacation weeks because I get to sleep in...and sleep in I do. Apparently I don't sleep at night anymore as I lay awake letting my brain work...or having my brain decide my stomach is upset...but I digress.

DW apparently got up around 8am...but the rest of us got up later and we lollygagged around until about 9:30. The adults were headed to Palo for brunch, so no breakfast for us...thus my stomach wasn't leading us upstairs quite as early as it might otherwise! We finally rolled out the door about 9:30and headed up. They got their usual assortment of food and we watched and were hungry. That's the worst part of Palo...is having to wait! I enjoy my food. :)

We cruised back to the room and lotioned (my word program says lotioned isn’t a word. So I lay claim to it as my word and my word only. If you wish to use it you must pay me $.000000000000000000001 per use). up the kids up as they were going to be on their own while we were at Palo. Let me just say how nice it is to reach the point when you can kick them out to the pool area on their own and trust they won't get into too much trouble. Gone are the days of forcing them to be checked into a club and ignoring their pages (well, ok except that first day, but that was Connor's choice! Really! Really...oh never mind). They headed up to the pool to wreak havoc with Ellie and John.

Around 11:45 we headed up to Palo to begin the gluttony. Palo and Remy are on the same level so took a quick peek into Remy which looked really cute. Palo also looked great, neat marble flooring with dark wood. Beautiful. Two major flaws in the design in my opinion. One was the head room wasn't great. While I didn't have to duck...I felt like I needed to because the ceiling was so close. But that wasn't the worst design issue here...the worst was that directly above Palo was....the sports court! So the entire time you could hear people running and jumping right on your head. Very strange.

But today is all about the food...and like any good Palo visitor we ate our fill. They had a lot of the standards that we always liked about the buffet..but in general...and I hate to even say this...Palo was much better on the Magic and Wonder. I don't know why, maybe it was the spacing of the restaurant so they didn't have enough room to do things the same way...cooked the same way, but the food just wasn't quite the same. It was good, just not great, you know? They only had one pizza available...they didn't have the Stolen bread which we both loved from the Magic/Wonder.

Either way, though, I still prefer the brunch to the dinner. Just a little less formal, and still yummy. So my recommendation here is that if you can only do one, pick brunch. We were not willing to pay the high price for Remy...so you won't get any Remy review here unfortunately. Maybe someday...when DW and I take a cruise on our own. :)

Naturally we did manage to spend a lot of time there and ended up chatting with Brian and Jennifer until almost 1pm. While this doesn't seem like a lot of time...it is to us. Let me explain. If I've explained this before feel free to fall asleep for the next few minutes.

DW and I are fast eaters. If restaurants knew that about us they could turn our table in a short period of time. This was demonstrated on the first cruise we ever took together. It was before we were married :scared1: (of course we slept in separate beds).

We were at a table for 4 people, and frequently our table mates were late for dinner. This was a Carnival cruise. The servers were very efficient. As soon as your fork stabbed the last bite on your plate the plate was gone and replaced with the next course. I'm pretty sure we were in and out of dinners in about 15 minutes. DW can back me up on that. They were so darned fast. But we were ok with it as we would move on to other things.

Obviously when you travel with friends, etc...things are different. As we have always gone on at Disney Cruise with friends and family our meals are longer...and yes we tend to chat. But DW and I can blow through a meal. We are a restaurants dream! But I digress (again).

We headed back to the room to find Connor, Ellie and John hanging out. Again it was very cool that the 4 kids really got along on this trip. It takes a lot of the stress out of things! Nick was off at another animation class. He really, really enjoyed the animation and has continued to carry it forward. For Christmas we got him some pencils and pads to do his animation and he can free-draw many of the major Disney characters. Pretty impressive. For DW's birthday (her 40th! ha!) he designed her card that came from the boys. It was so cute. He has some talent there. Not sure if he will persue it or not.

At 2 was towel folding..so DW took the 3 kids with her to do that. I have no idea what I did during this time as DW didn't bother to write it down. Clearly I was not a priority on this day as I disappear.

My gut tells me I went up and read my book by the pool. I know at some point Brian and I hung out in the chairs looking out at the ocean. Dang this TR has been going on too long as I don't remember what I've told you and what I haven't...so if I already told this part of the story you can have your admission money back. :)

We were sitting looking out (as I already said...I'm getting senile in my old age). And other than several trips down to the cabins to get beer we hung out for quite some time. Brian and I like to talk football so that's what we did. Meanwhile we had a rotation going on around us. My guess is that people would tire of hearing us talk about football and would leave. We thought that was quite humorous. But we had a great time...very relaxing knowing you just don't have anywhere you have to go...and can go nowhere at whatever pace you want. Niiiiiice.

But back in the towel folding, they learned how to do a Monkey, Elephant and a Dog. At some point Nick finished his animation class and joined them.

At some point I came along too because I remember the next part. We were walking down the hall and they were doing the pre-show for the golden Mickey's. They were doing the interview thing and Ellie got picked...

DSC_1326.jpg
Ellie strutting her stuff on the red carpet

And then Nick got picked...

DSC_1327.jpg
Nick doing the same

Enjoy those pictures...there is only one left for this day. I did so poorly taking pics!

Nick and Ellie wanted to see the Golden Mickey's...I did not...so I took the kids up to the room and DW took those two in to see the show.

And then...it was shuffleboard time. again. We headed down there hoping that this time we would actually be able to have the tournament. We waited around...and this time a CM showed up! We were very excited. Originally there were 4 teams (I believe), Connor and John, Nick and Ellie, and two teams we didn't know. I was going to join Connor and John...but then one of the two other teams took off...so I splintered off to be my own team. But then along came Brian..and we joined forces to be the super shuffleboard team. We took on all comers...and it came down to Nick and Ellie vs. Brian and I. Needless to say we won. Nick was not pleased...especially because they were killing us in the final game but we came back to beat them. I should feel bad...but at 12 years old I think I'm allowed to beat my kid, right? :)

After that it was time for dinner...back to the room to get cleaned up again. We were in the Enchanted Garden. The kids took off before desert as had become their normal thing to do...heading to the aquaduck while there was no one there. After dessert Jennifer and DW headed to the stores...Brian and I up to join the kids at the aquaduck (hey, I want to ride it too!).

After swimming for a while we all decided to go see "African Cats" which was something that Jennifer had wanted to do. So we got dressed grabbed some food (heaven forbid we be hungry at all!) and headed to the theater. The movie was pretty good...I'm not a huge fan of documentaries, but it was pretty interesting following essentially several "tribes" of lions and a couple of other cat families. I am frequently amazed at how they get that footage...and how long they must follow these animals to get all of that.

At some point Donald Duck came wandering in...and sits down to watch the movie. I've seen that type of thing several times in movies and find it funny that they do that. And then Chip and Dale came in, wandered up on the stage and did some funny chip and dale type things. Again pretty entertaining.

We cruised by shutters to look at pictures and then Connor started to not feel so hot. So we took him back to the room to rest while the rest of the kids headed out to play some games.

The adults headed to the adult version of the Ron Pearman show. We found some seats and relaxed ready for the show. It was quite entertaining; this guy is really, really funny. What was also funny was apparently there was a women next to Jennifer who was talking the whole time...until Jennifer asked her to be quiet. Brian is a big tough guy...but believe you me...don't mess with Jennifer! :)

After the show we headed back to the room...empty of all kids. So I headed out to find where they were...they were all up on deck watching "Up" on funnel vision. We stayed and watched for a bit...and then headed back to the room...time for bed!

Our towel animal:
DSC_1328.jpg
I have to say the towel animals were not very original. Just Sayin'.

Thanks for getting through that...the next one has lots of pics...so less of me doing my thing! :)

Next up: Chapter 12: Second Dip!

He is alive!! See, I didn't do anything to him to stop the trip report. Hopefully he'll be on a roll now and will actually finish this in a timely manner for all you who are leaving shortly on your cruises!

There were some chains...and a ball. ahem. moving on.

HEY, I heard that! ;)

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, TMI, TMI, TMI, TMI!!!!!!!!!!!!

 OMG!!!!!!!!!!! It means you finally took the ear plugs out!!

I never promised this was a "G" rated TR. Just like I never promised to finish by a certain time. :thumbsup2

Loving your TR....we are on Dream in May so I like to see what I have to look forward too! Lots of fun I see :)
Welcome aboard. See, this is why I wait. The longer I wait I get new people involved! Let me know if you have any specific questions...I'm sure your looking forward to your trip!

My phone started beeping while I was on the train this morning. At first I thought it was another earthquake warning,,,nope just a tr update. Welcome back.:cool1:

Glad to see you are alive and well. Love the update.
Thank you, thank you! :)

Ha! Everyone's a comedian. I love it. So Tokyo Disneyland is one we haven't been to yet. Have you been to Disney parks other than Tokyo, and how do they compare?

DZ

So before I go any further, I am not sure that I updated you on where we were with the sale of our house at this point. If I already told you this...you know the drill, you can have a 100% refund of the purchase price!

If you recall we had been raked over the coals while in Orlando because we failed our inspection due to a couple of really silly things, and now we had to bring in some people to do some work while we were thousands of miles away. The work got done, but naturally the inspectors could only come during the week...which meant while we were on the cruise. I coordinated with our realtor to have her e-mail me to let me know if we were good, but I don't remember if it was Tuesday she was supposed to e-mail me or Thursday (thus why I'm not sure if I shared it with you).

So I took my tablet down to the lobby, logged in, paid my $20 for around 5 minutes of time...and got the e-mail from our realtor...we were good! The inspection passed. No more hurdles to jump through...well except one, but more on that later!

Today is Thursday...and it's our second dip to Castaway Cay. As this was day #2 we didn't hurry much, just went and had a leisurely breakfast at Cabannas.

Side note here (I know, I know...really my whole TR is just one giant side note). Don't rush. It's so easy to feel stressed that you have to do this or that...run off the ship every time your in port. Everyone seems to do this...and do you know what happens? you end up waiting in lines...lines to get off....lines for the tender etc. Unless you have a specific excursion that you have to get off the ship for...take you time. Let the crowds get off the ship and then stroll off at your own pace. I think this is probably the biggest suggestion I can give you. You will feel a lot more relaxed and frankly you will probably get alot more done. Are you going to get a hammock on Castaway Cay? No, but there are plenty of chairs everywhere! :thumbsup2

After a nice breakfast (eggs benedict again. Yum! and bacon and syrup of course. Who could go a whole meal without that?) we strolled off the ship. Camera in tow this time...so we have lots of pictures to bore...er...to share with you. :)

Gotta have our picture with the ship

And the boys with the ship

We decided to take the tram over to Pelican Point. Normally we are enterprising and want to walk...but clearly this was a lazy vacation...nice!

DSC_1332.jpg
Waiting for the tram

Pelican Point is where the water slides are…and you definitely need to go do them. Again I can't remember how much I shared with you about them on the first dip...but I'm going to go over them all again. To get in you have to go through a maze of rope. Shocker. That's when you know Disney is involved! Don't forget to Moo while you are going through the ropes. Actually there was never a line or anything...so not sure why they are there. If your child is too short they have to put on a life vest like thing before getting in the water...but otherwise you just get in the water and swim over to the platform where the slides are.

You have two choices of slides...The open slide is longer but not as fast. The enclosed slide is shorter but faster. They are both pretty fun. It's not exactly a huge water park experience...but it's a good time. OH, and when you end up in the ocean after sliding on the slides don't go all the way out, you can swim under the ropes and just go right back on again. There was a lifeguard right there...but he never said anything to us. Could be if it is crowded they wouldn't let you do that (again in true Disney fashion!), but if it's not you should be good. The line does take a bit of time when you are getting up to the slides though. Just be patient and relax mon. :cool1:

Connor decided to go searching for the little tiny hermit crabs again. These are found at the bottom of the posts that are in the water.

Hermit Crabs!

He was very successful...when he wants something he gets it. The only thing they could not get while we were there were these clear looking fish that were swimming around. Pretty funny.

had to take a pic in front of cookies

Short day on the island...we decided to head back in. The disadvantage of the double dip is that you are more likely to not spend as much time there. We really like the island...but we really like the ship too. :)

On the way back we hit the shop for some last minute gifts. Our enterprising cherubs found trading pins on clearance...some for $2.99 and some for $3.99. Naturally we bought all that we could find. Great gifts! Yes we are cheap! :) This was very exciting as the boys love trading pins.

On the way back we found a couple of characters...

DSC_1344.jpg
Our pictures with goofy almost always come out nice. Not sure why that is. The other characters are hit and miss...but for some reason...

So sad to go...

Lucky Nick was there to help hold up the ship!

Yes, Connor is that lazy, he must lean on everything!

DSC_1351.jpg
I had not eaten in around 10 minutes. Starving...so starving!

Then it was up the ramp and back onto the ship...and you guessed it, back to the aquaduck!

DSC_1370.jpg
And the pool of course.

I wandered down to go take care of tips...figuring (correctly) that most people were still on the island so I would be able to avoid the lines.

A lot of people ask about tipping. Here is my general thought. I will always give at least the base suggested amount. Even if I'm not particularly happy with what the person did for me. The Christmas cruise was an example of that. But I *will* add as much as $5/person if they go above and beyond. i think on this cruise we went somewhere in between. We weren't floored by anyone, but the service was pretty good. I think some of it is the transition of the people to the ship, like Leslie who had moved from the Magic where he had 7 nights to get to know you...losing 2 nights is alot if you are in that mindset. We got to know and like him later, but it took a long time.

DW, unfortunately, was getting attacked by a migraine during this time. She tried cooling off in the pool, but had to break down and go get her medicine in the room. She eventually just had to lay down and rest.

The boys and I, meanwhile, decided to do the detective agency which I had not yet done. So we headed off. Since Connor and Nick had already done it we already knew to go to one end of the ship and then skip floors as the clues are on every other deck...then go to the other end and repeat until you can solve it! I do recommend, however, that you do it the right way the first time...it does take you on an adventure through the ship and helps you get acquainted with it.

DSC_1372.jpg
Connor and Nick getting us started

DSC_1373.jpg
And at one of the stations.

Pretty neat how they turned art into a game...I have to say the imagineers really nailed it with that piece of the ship!

At some point we also went to the matinee showing of Believe. While I'm not a huge show guy I have to say this was really well put together and you should definitely see this one if you have the time and inclination. Generally I don't mind skipping the shows as the ship is typically pretty empty (people either in the show or at dinner) so you can do anything you want without the crowds. But this one was good.

After we did that we headed back to the room, collected DW who was feeling a little bit better and headed to dinner.

DSC_1377.jpg
Aren't we cute?

Brian and Jennifer

DSC_1379.jpg
The kids always figured out how to entertain themselves.

The kids skipped desert as usual and headed out to the aquaduck. After desert Brian and I donned out swimsuits and did the same. DW went back to the room as she still had a headache...she relaxed, watched Believe on the tv and did some packing.

We had a great time at the pool, riding the aquaduck over and over again and finally ending up in the hot tubs. The hot tubs are incredible...they are right against the edge of the ship so you can see out and the sides are plexiglass so it looks really neat.

And if you turn the bubbles off, they have the same window on the floor as elsewhere...so you can see down to deck 4. Pretty cool stuff. These small design features are what sets Disney apart in my opinion!

Eventually it was time for bed...

Alas our trip is over...but I do have one more entry...and some intrigue...

thanks for sticking around.

Chapter 13: debarkation

Wow folks, he is on a roll now. Blink and you might miss an installment:) Now I'm intrigued with what he has to say next!

Thank you, thank you! :)

Ha! Everyone's a comedian. I love it. So Tokyo Disneyland is one we haven't been to yet. Have you been to Disney parks other than Tokyo, and how do they compare?

DZ

My history with Disney...hmmm. What a story:)
Well I'm originally from Georgia and spent many a vacation in WDW. I even did a 6 month music internship playing trombone at EPCOT when I was in college. I went to the original Disneyland once when I was a teen, but have never seen California Adventure. I have been to Hong Kong Disney once, but hated it. Never been to Paris...would love to go, but not really a Europe kind of guy. My Disney Cruise in 2007 was amazing and we are planning our 2013 cruise at the moment.

Now to get to my home park...Tokyo Disney...It is what WDWwas meant to be...magical and wonderful. Tokyo Disney SEA is the most amazing park in the world...nothing else is even close. If you ever get here give me a call and you will have a guide and translater.

Well it seems that I'm joining in at the right time. Conveniently missed the endless waiting others had to endure.

In all seriousness this was a wonderful TR and thank you so much for sharing. Of course also thanking DW for journaling so you didn't have to remember it all on your own.

I'm glad the Xbox threat caused the fighting to end. You guys look like such a happy fun loving family, I love it!

We're doing our first cruise on the Dream in March so this was just fabulous.

It's good to have you back! Now, as the trip continues to bring back the memories . . .

As to your: "You Can't Rush Art!". (name that movie!). I suffer for my art!
I name the movie to be Camelot. It was what Guenivier said about Arthur proposing. The second part was also a quote "I suffer for my [A]rt" -- I think it was what Lancelot said as he was roaming the country trying not to intefere with the king's relationship - the one he wasn't rushing. Yeah, that's it. Oh, I'm sure that there was some other movies that used the lines, but just not as well.

Now, as to the chains and a ball. Where are your minds at people? That is a metaphor for marriage, not the honeymoon.

Now, back to our irregularly scheduled TR. Take it away DisneyZell . . .

Oh, wait, when is your next cruise?? Are you planning one? I need to know, 'cause I prefer your TR's and would schedule to be on the ship at the same time, just to live vicariously through your TR memories. That, and I'm too lazy to do my own.

Good to know! I'd love to go to Tokyo Disney some day. We have been to Disneyland Paris and really enjoyed it, particularly Crush's Coaster which is, in my opinion one of the best rides in all of the Disney parks I have been to (which is Disneyland, California Adventure, Disney World and Disneyland Paris).
:)

I aim to please...and yes your timing is quite good. Only one more chapter to go and then I'm done! Freed from the chains that apparently didn't bind me very well since I took a long time getting there! :)

Thanks for the comments!

Thanks for the laugh as always. However you are wrong on the quote...or at least what I was intending the quote to be. Not to say that there isn't that exact same quote in another movie...but I was targetting Toy Story 2...when Woody is being refurbished....Al askes how long it will take and the old guy replies "you can't rush art". :)

No plans right now for a cruise. Originally we had scheduled a cruise for April on the newest ship...but when we moved it screwed up our vacations..so we couldn't make it. We have pushed it off to a TBD date at this point. I know we can't do anything in 2013, so maybe 2014. Or when I become independantly wealthy. Maybe I should start charging for my Tr's...I'm around 18,000 viewers...so if I charge $1/view I'd pay for a couple of trips!

DZ

This is to inform you that you will be recieving a bill from my eye doctor. The reason being that you put those blinkety blankety links to previous TRs at the bottom of your posts here. :headache: I accidently :rolleyes1 clicked on the TR link for the trip prior to this one. It wouldn't have been so bad had I been home and able to read through on the computer, but I was on the train using my phone. Of course I had to read the whole thing straight through.:scared1: Now I can't see without seeing in triplicate.:3dglasses In additition I may be going to the bone doctor to have my fingers looked at from punching those microscopic page numbers on the phone...I have BIG hands and fingers so it took multiple attempts. Don't be surprised if that bill follows.:lmao:

I can't argue, Toy Story used the line better than my poor example. And, we can't rush Art, but your name ain't Art - so move along with report will ya?
