Changes ahead for European cruises. The city council of Amsterdam has voted to move the cruise port in the city center to somewhere else.

Main Reason: air and curb pollution. Amsterdam has a tourist problem they have been trying to solve.
Surprised to learn that 1 big cruise ship is equally bad for the environment as 30.000 trucks.

The port will probably be replaced by IJmuiden on the coast. By bus probably 45 minutes from the city center.
No news yet as from when this will be changed.

Not every city wants cruise ships. Same with Bar Harbor, but they keep getting dragged into court for their restrictions.

I wonder what the impact on Amsterdam will be with all the extra bus loads coming into the city.

We will have to see. It might be easier for tour operators to offer bus tours to other parts of NL. When you dock in the middle of the city, probably the majority will just stay there. Especially with Amsterdam.

If they dock in IJmuiden, it will be more attractive to offer tours to cities like Haarlem, Zaandam and the tulip fields when docked in the right season.

Other options for cruiselines is to dock in Rotterdam. Reasonably in the city center as well, but Rotterdam doesnt have the tourist problems Amsterdam has. Rotterdam is probably more attractive due to being close to historic cities like Delft and the Hague.

Having lived in Amsterdam I totally get why having the ships dock in town is problematic. The other available ports would have different sorts of excursions but honestly, for the average non-party cruise, probably better options.

Did the cruise terminal move from the Amsterdam city center?
Trying to make reservations prior to cruise and arrange transportation

“Amsterdam's city council on July 20 voted to ban cruise ships from the center of Amsterdam in order to limit tourism and ease pollution in the Dutch capital. The council claims cruise ship vessels are not conducive to the city's efforts to limit tourism and boost sustainability, according to a statement from the Democrats 66 party.

For the ban to be enacted, it will have to go through other levels of approval. If approved, it will see the closure of Cruise Port Amsterdam on the river IJ near the city's main train station, Amsterdam Centraal Station. Currently, ship calls are still scheduled there until July 2025.

The closest alternative port is the west coast IJmuiden, 24 miles away. However, the Cruise Lines International Association — an organization that advocates for cruise lines at the federal level — said in a statement that it's more likely the existing facility could be moved elsewhere within the city.

"As the port has publicly stated, cruise ships have not been banned from Amsterdam," CLIA said. "Furthermore, the port and Passenger Terminal Amsterdam have already pledged to undertake investments worth millions of Euros in port infrastructure and shoreside electricity for the long term. There have been discussions on its relocation outside the city center, which started back in 2016 and which are still ongoing."

Ultimately, cruise lines are skeptical that ships will be completely barred from docking in Amsterdam. "Holland America Line has been bringing guests to and from The Netherlands for 150 years, and that tradition will continue for many years to come," the line told The Points Guy in a statement when asked how a ban might affect the brand's longstanding history in the region.“ - the Points Guy, August 2023

Key West residents voted for a ban but the state passed a law allowing cruise ships to continue

we docked at rotterdam on the dream last summer on norway cruise. was gorgeous and the city people were amazing. one of our favorite memories was one of the ships blasting circle of life as we left port.
