Cruise on lake to see fireworks?

I saw on a post about a cruise on the lake you can take to view fireworks at MK. Wondering if you have to be staying onWDW property to do this? And can you get a cruise from CR... we will be eating at CM one evening and would like to do the cruise if possible after our meal? If this isn't possible, any suggestions for where to view fireworks outside of MK and close to CR?

From what I understand there are Illumintions and Wishes cruises. There is information about them on the Theme Park Board. I havent decided which one I want to do. I do know they are expensive and hard to get.

I've done the MK cruise twice, leaving once from GF and once from the Poly (our choice). You cruise around the lake, and depending on your captain's knowledge can learn a lot of info about WDW history/facts. We "parked" across from castle in time for the fireworks and had a terrific view and enjoyed hearing the music. It was truly magical, like the show was done just for us.

While I've never done the Illuminations cruise, the MK fireworks one is more appealing to me. I've been on the International bridge where the Illuminations boat parks for the show, and the people on the bridge are looking directly down into the boat. A couple people on the bridge joked that they'd better be careful with their pop sitting on the ledge, because otherwise it would land on someone in the boat.

We did the Wishes cruise in May. At the time we were staying off-site. Our cruise did leave from the Contemporary. It was WONDERFUL!
