I was TRYING to read the specifications in regards to canceling a cruise and I was under the impression if I book today, put down my $800 deposit today, and tomorrow I can't go, I will lose that $800 deposit or charged some kind of fee. Is that right? I wonder this because at the resort they took a $200 deposit and said that it was FULLY refundable until August the 16th which is when the balance is due. PLEASE tell me that I won't incur any kind of fee until an appointed date (and have it be the truth :rotfl:)

Thanks again! You guys rock!

In most cases, your deposit would be fully refundable until the Paid in Full date (75-90 days before sailing depending on the sailing length/itinerary). The exceptions are suite/concierge deposits which are non-refundable once made. And the inaugural cruise on the dream which is also non-refundable once reservation is made.

OK so I am going on the Wonder September 26-Oct 3rd and We are staying in a Cat 4 room (if we can get it) 8550. I am assuming this is not a suite/concierge (please dont think I am getting smart. I really dont know what these types of rooms are).

You are correct that a cat 4 cabin is not a suite/concierge cabin. As long as you cancel prior to your paid in full date you will get a full refund.

Yes, Cat 4 is a non-concierge room. So your deposit on that sailing would be fully refundable (no fees) until 75 days before your sailing. Penalties start on day 74 prior to sailing.

Oh yeah! You don't know how much better that makes me feel. What if it comes up about a week before the cruise and I get sick. Can I rebook for a fee or do I just lose it all and that is it?

Always a good idea to read and understand the terms and conditions. I've extracted some relevant information and highlighted in blue.

Cancellations/Refunds
Cancellations may be made by telephone or in writing. Changes to the vacation commencement date or changes of guest names will be considered cancellations. For cancellations, amounts paid, minus cancellation fees and other amounts owed, will be promptly refunded. No refunds will be made in the event of interruption or cancellation by the Guest after vacation commencement date. All appropriate refunds will be made directly to the Guest's credit card account or through the Guest's Travel Agent if the reservation is made through a Travel Agent. Disney Cruise Vacations is not responsible for the receipt of refund monies by Guests from their Travel Agents. When applicable, monies are refunded based on exchange rates at the time of cancellation, not the exchange rate at the time of payment. All travel documents including airline tickets must be returned before refund processing can begin. Certain Travel Agents may withhold an agency cancellation fee. Disney Cruise Line reserves the right to restrict any changes to a reservation. All changes are subject to availability. Please note that changes made to overall party size may result in a change to the rate. For your peace of mind, we recommend the purchase of the Vacation Protection Plan. Premiums for the Vacation Protection Plan must be paid by the final payment due date, and the Vacation protection Plan is not effective until final vacation payment is made.

We just booked our first cruise yesterday for September 2011. We had the same concerns and felt better when we realized we could cancel up until 75 days out and get a full refund.

As far as a week before the cruise, it depends if you have vacation insurance or not. Without insurance (as another poster mentioned), Disney will refund 50% of the vacation price for cruises cancelled 8-44 days prior to sail date. For cruises cancelled within 7 days of sailing, no refund is given. If you purchase vacation insurance, which we did, you can cancel at any time, for select reasons, and get a full refund back, minus the cost of the vacation insurance.

Note that there are many rules, restrictions, and guidelines governing refunds. Claims can be hard to file and easy to deny. What finally sold me on booking the cruise and getting the insurance is this--if you purchase the Disney vacation insurance, but a claim for cancellation is denied by the insurance company, Disney will give you a voucher for the cost of your cruise for a future sail date. Disney does not do that unless you purchase the insurance through them. So for us, it was a nice fail-safe to fall back on, and finally encouraged us to book.

By the way, here is the vacation insurance policy: http://disneycruise.disney.go.com/m...stomizeCruise/Insurance/VacationInsurance.pdf. Hope this helps!

This might be where Travel Insurance comes in handy...
I know this has been posted a few times but this site should help - www.insuremytrip.com
Others might be able to better answer what all is covered by various private travel insurance companies.

OK so the only options that are available is cancel or sail. There is no transfer to another date kinda thing? I read the guidelines REALLY I did. I just couldn't understand them (simple mind and all :rotfl2:) and that is where I got the idea that you were not to get any money at all back.

If I book the full trip and cancel before 75 day out, I assume I get that back as well? I ask because I have heard you get your deposit back which I ASSUME that would go for the full price too but I just want to be precise. I want to book a message on Castaway Cay for my mother and they won't let me do that until I pay in full.

Sorry. I really don't mean to be one of those that asks questions that are clearly covered in the terms, but I just can't understand them sometimes. :3dglasses thanks! :dance3:

There have been some posts in the past, where people had to change travel plans at the last minute or after the PIF date, and was able to work out something with DCL to keep from losing everything. I haven't done it personally, but I remember one person posted about how if you use the trip insurance purchased through DCL, and they deny your claim, that you can apply the money paid for that trip to a future cruise. You may want to search the old threads to see the specifics, but if I remember correctly, the person was a week or two out and couldn't sail for some reason that wasn't legitimately covered under the trip insurance. DCL told them to file a claim with the trip insurance, have it denied (which it would be because it wasn't covered) and then that person would be able to apply the monies paid for that cruise toward another DCL cruise.

Yes, if you book, pay in full and cancel before the 75 day mark (for the cruise you're looking at) you can get the full cruise fare back including the deposit.

Most excursions, spa treatments and other reservations that you book can be canceled until 3 days prior to sailing. You don't generally pay for those until you are on the ship. So even if you PIF in advance of the 75 day mark so you can book the massage in advance (assuming you are a Castaway Club member with that priviledge), and then end up canceling prior to the 75 day mark, you would still get back what you paid for the cruise fare, but wouldn't owe anything for the massage that is booked and wouldn't get any credit for canceling the massage (since you didn't pay anything for it.) There are some "Signature" excursions they've been adding that are due in full at the time you book them, and aren't refundable, but those generally require them to book via phone so you know what you're getting into.

Thank you so much for all that information! I will look into the insurance. That would be great to have some sort of backup. I have a grandmother that is notorious for getting sick or tripping and breaking something within a couple of weeks before we leave on a big trip. lol

I am sure I am not a castaway Club member because I have never heard of this. So basically, I can't book a massage on Castaway Cay early? If not, then I will hold off on paying the whole fare.

Thanks again!!!

If you're worried about having to cancel due to last minute illness of your grandmother, then I would purchase trip insurance privately (not through DCL) within 2 weeks of your initial trip deposit. Most insurance companies will cover pre-existing conditions if you purchase trip insurance within 14-21 days of when you first book the trip. Applies to illness or injury of you or someone you care about generally. Some policies also include "cancel for any reason" options if purchased within that period as well, though it generally costs more. If you are beyond the 2-3 week period from when you paid your deposit, then the DCL insurance may be the best bet, not because it covers pre-existing conditions (it doesn't), but for the possible ability to transfer to another cruise as mentioned above.

The Castaway Club is the repeat cruiser program for DCL. If you've ever sailed with DCL then you are a member. If this is your first cruise then you are not. Castaway Club members (and Concierge guests) are allowed to book excursions, SPA treatments and Palo in advance of everyone else as long as they are paid in full. If you are not a Castaway Club member, then you can't book SPA treatments, excursions, etc. until the 75 day mark, which is also the paid in full date.

You can hold off paying in full until your paid in full date - usually 75 days prior to sailing. If you are not paid in full by that date, they can (and have in the past) cancel your reservation.

As for trying to get a massage reservation, they hold back reservations to be booked on board. So, you can go up to the spa (deck 9 by the forward elevators) right after you board to see what is available.

OK so I will just have to wait until I board to try to get a reservation for a massage on Castaway Cay. She really really wants it there. But if it is booked, I am sure she will enjoy one on board. I just really want to give her the Castaway Cay massage.

You guys are more than awesome. I truly TRULY appreciate your help in all of this!:flower3:

You don't have to wait until you are onboard - once you hit the 75 day mark and are paid in full, you can book anything that is available online.

I paid my deposit today. Am I out of luck with my insurance?
For insurance bought through Disney, you have until you make your final payment to add their insurance. If you booked online, you have the option to add it through your online account (or you can call Disney to add it to your cruise). Once you make your final cruise payment, you are required to also pay any insurance at that time. If you do not make your insurance payment with your final payment, then you are no longer eligible to add Disney's insurance.

If you purchase insurance elsewhere, you will have to consult their individual policy rules for when they allow insurance to be added.
