SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- A professor at the University of Washington Medical School who moved to Botswana to help alleviate a shortage of doctors there, was killed when a crocodile dragged him from a dugout canoe, his family and colleagues said.

I really would rather die peacefully in my sleep, but don't you think this would be just the worst way to go?? Oh, my, I'll surely have a nightmare about this one tonight!

There are lots of gross ways to die. If I got to choose, I'd certainly avoid this one. I'm sorry it happened to him; sounds like he was trying to help and met an unfortunate demise.

Could you get me a link to the story? My niece is going to Batswana next fall to "study abroad."

I know! It's such a sad story! He had been having some sadness in his life and things were getting better for him. Not to mention the good he was doing for other people.

This is one of those stories that I think, why did God do that??

I saw this story on the aol news page. They say the croc just leaped up, grabbed him and that was it. He never reappeared once the croc went into it's roll. Very sad. Anyone ever see the size of those african crocs? They're huge and FAST. The report said that they were on the careful lookout for hippo but unfortunately, the croc came out of nowhere.

I am not certain that God did anything as much as He allowed events to unfold. YMMV

You say either, I say either :)

No, I just wonder, you know, why stuff like this happens just when things are looking up for people. I believe there is a plan for the universe. Something like this just throws me a curve.

They were talking about this on the radio this morning...about why does God take away people who seem to be doing so much good. One person brought up the point that if he didn't die in this terrible manner, many people never would have heard about him or the work he was doing in Botswana. Maybe more good will come from this tragic event. It's sad (and horrific), but maybe his memory will live on in others who help to complete his work.

Now I am not saying that God made this occur, but He can bring good out of it.

Of course then another caller said, that maybe God killed him because God sent AIDS as a way of cleansing the population on earth.

Since I don't believe in a god, all I can offer up is that the man was in a canoe in crocodile infested waters. I'm surprised Steve Irwin hasn't been eaten yet. Would you wonder about god then or would you say "dang, it's about time" :lmao:

I'm kidding. I kid. I'm a kidder. :rolleyes1

God or no god, my chances of being eaten by a crocodile are about nil. You know, living in Michigan and all. No aligators in the sewers here.

I agree with MzDiz. Stories like this are the one and ONLY good thing about living in MI. (Can you tell I'm irrated that we got more freakin snow overnight!!!!!! :furious:  )

I think that would be horrific way to die, but hopefully it would be quick. My fear is being trapped in a sinking car and slowly watching the water rise until you can't find anymore breathing room and trying desperately to hold your breath until you drown.

Or worse being caught in a burning building with no way out and facing the knowledge that you would be burned alive.

I often wonder about those who jumped to their deaths from the Trade Center towers in NY. I can't imagine how horrifying the conditions were inside if jumping was the better alternative. :guilty:
