What type of crockpot do you have?

I have a Rival one where it has the warm, low and high setting.

It cooks WAY TOO HOT!

I could put a 1+ lb pork roast in there frozen and it would be cooked in less than 4 hours on low.

We both work so I want something that cooks correctly since we are gone 10 hours.

Any suggestions?

TIA!

I have the same one & have the same problem. One of my coworkers just said hers does the same thing....

Any suggestions on one that works well? I don't feel comfortable leaving it on and going to work because it overcooks.

Buy an older model. I am only 1/2 kidding. I have several older ones ( like 25 years old) and they cook much slower and at a lower heat then the newer models.

I have the same problem. I heard the newer models cook at higher temperatures to eliminate the risk of bacteria. My mom has one that she from the 80's and her roasts come out so tender and perfect. I could cook the same roast in the same amount of time and it comes out dry and tough.

I agree. I can't leave anything in our newer ones for more than a few hours. I almost exclusively use our one that is 15+ years old. I thought I read somewhere that they cook hotter nowdays as a safety reason, as they think the old slowcookers allowed too much bacteria to grow or something similar by cooking at too low a temp.

I have a crock pot brand slow cooker. It does fine. My sister had the same complaints you all have and I did research and found many reviews about cooking too high. Mine has been good. Got it last Christmas.

I have a Ninja. It has a stove top setting high and low, and it also has a low, high and buffet setting for the slow cooker. I really like it, I use it all the time.

I think all the new ones cook much hotter. There were evidently concerns from a food safety perspective about the old ones cooking at too low of a temperature.

Wow, the original Crockpot (Rival) is what I have always owned, and have never had any problems with it cooking too hot - sister has one also and it cooks fine too.

I now have the larger Rival that has 2 high - 2 low settings, then switches to warm. It also works perfectly. I use it all the time even though I'm a SAHM - just love to 'smell' the all-day cooking! ;)

If I had purchased one that got too hot, I would be returning it and having a 'talk' with Rival!!! ::yes:: Just my 2 cents!

What about one with a timer? Granted then you have to have it sitting in a room temp crock so that might not be good.

Or one that cooks and then keeps warm, like a pp said.

I have one that is a roaster/slow cooker. The slow cooker setting are High, Low, Simmer and Warm and I would guess I could cook something all day on Warm and it'd work (usually I cook on Low and then change to warm).

I also have a Crock-pot brand, and I love it. It has the timer to switch to warm, and I haven't had any problems with anything over or under cooking.

The ONLY issue I occasionally run into is if I use a liner, then sometimes after a long day it will get a hole in it and leak, but I don't know if that's a heat issue or an "I'm being too rough putting food in" issue

I base this on nothing but my own observations. Most people use slow cookers that are way too large. They need to be filled half-way to three-quarters full to cook most efficiently. I'd be surprised if the "hot cooking" slow cookers were no more than 1/3 full.

I have a Cuisinart that I bought on sale for $20 at Walmart and a Krups combination Slowcooker/Rice Cooker/Steamer that I received as a gift that was well over $100. Guess which one I like better? Yep.. the cheapie.

I don't hate the Krups, but I find it cooks way too fast. In fact I did a huge batch of meatballs for a family get together and they were completely done in the Krups at least an hour before the Cuisinart.:confused3

I really like the Cook & Travel Crock-pot, the cord is short so i have an extension cord with it but otherwise its fine. If I could have found a travel one that also had a timer I'd get that but they dont seem to make one with both. If I needed a timer I guess I'd just use a wall timer with mine, I think a timer is easier to rig than making the seal tight enough for travel with liquids.

It does burn hotter than my old one but I just shorten cooking time & add more fluids.

My Rival Crockpot 'does' have a built in timer - a selection of 4 or 6 hours on high, or 8 or 10 hours on low, then each switches to warm - cooks perfect.

Also, like a pp said, always fill it at least 1/2 - 2/3 full - that's what most/all pots call for - so buy pots for the size that you will need.

Wow, thats great! Which model has both an on off timer & travel clamps? I would grab one, maybe they came out with new ones since I got mine last year or I just missed it. It would make life so much easier
